PlayStation Phone: spec analysis | Digital Foundry

It's not really about the tech - it's about the buttons. Based on the PSP Phone specs leaked by Chinese site IT268 and mulled over by Engadget, the PlayStation Phone is a reasonably powerful but not barnstorming performer. However, the inclusion of a PSP-style controller setup means that the gameplay experience is going to be radically different, and perhaps more appealing to the core gamer, as a matter of course.

I hope not announcing this at CES means they announce it at GDC or worse... E3! I need a proper PSP 2!! :(

kneon5615d ago

I expect this phone will be announced at Mobile World Congress next month and the PSP2 will be announced at E3.

"It's down to the games to convince us of its prospects"

^^^^this is pretty much it, now if sony can port psp games to this then we are on to a winner, if it only supports android games and what ever titles sony can make from scratch then it maybe in trouble

trancefreak5615d ago

Ya you have a good point it appears like a controller phone than anything else unless they can get psp games to work.

Im betting psp games will play on this phone from the ps store along with droid os games.

Someone will hack anyways probably make a ROM to play psp games if it does or doesn't have built in capabilities.

neogeo5615d ago

As I feared. I'm sure it will win because of the good games, but its already outdated before it comes out. The Samsung Galaxy S has the same specs and its been out 6 months. The new LG's and samsungs this years are going Dual core while this phone stays in the distant past.

randomwiz5615d ago

actually the galaxy s gpu is faster.. almost twice as fast, but that doesn't mean that this is at all slow. The Adreno 205 is pretty fast, comparable to iphone 4 gpu, unlike the sad gpu's that come with other qualcomm processors. The only thing I don't like is the fact that they will release this at the end of a 1ghz processor's performance dominance. I wish they release this with Tegra 2 or something of the sort.

Anyways, I did not expect this to be an ultra high performance device. Its just there to get some good games on android

Stealth20k5615d ago

Its not going to be able to play all psp games. It will be able to play "Select" ones that sony chooses.

This isnt a psp phone people. Get that through your heads. This is a sony ericonsmart phone that will borrow certain psp games, classics, minis

Ju5614d ago

This thing will not play any PSP game - unless they are ported to "Playstation Pocket".

ULTIMATE_REVENGE5615d ago

This phone has really crap specs compared to all the phones that were recently shown at CES.

Sony's phones have always looked ugly.

Spinal5615d ago

You say 'crap' specs but have you looked at the specs of a PSP? Why would they need a Dual core and 1gb ram if the specs of phones from last gen already outdo the PSP.

Now with the Sony Playstation license they can now have official PSP /PS1 games on an actual Smartphone which isnt hacked/illegal emulation which is already on smartphones today.

I'm buying this phone for certain to replace my iPhone 4. But im also gettin the Motorola Atrix for my contract line on Orange. my iphone 4 is currently on t-mobile pay as you go. (UK)

"You say 'crap' specs but have you looked at the specs of a PSP? Why would they need a Dual core and 1gb ram if the specs of phones from last gen already outdo the PSP."

100% agreement
i mean a Iphone 3 has more than enough power to make games just the control's were lacking..and this PSP Phone has Hardware = to the Iphone 4 but with dedicated Game control's.

I mean what are people expecting really. the quality of handheld gaming is great an all but your not going to really bypass other Handhelds if their spec's are near the same level anyway. the High end smartphones today have GPU capabilities on the order of Game console had last generation. that's game consoles you had under the tv not in the palm of your hand! I mean that in of itself is fantastic.

the PSP was louded as like having the PS2 in the palm of your hand..an today the hardware in smart phones far outstrip the capabilities of the PSP and the DS. ONTOP OF THAT it's not just one SmartPhone manuf. it's pretty much all of them!

ULTIMATE_REVENGE5614d ago

Why do you bring up the iPhone 4? I specifically said pones announced at CES. If this is slated for this year (which it is) then it's already failed imo. Have seen the specs of latest phones? they're insane compared to this.

I can't by asked listing them but it shouldn't be hard to find on Engadget since they just covered a whole load of them.

I'm not saying Sony's crap, I said their phones are.

Ju5614d ago

I disagree with the crappy specs. It is still top of the line of current phone.

However, with the CES at the doors, a Tegra2 reveal of an actual PSP Phone could have made some waves.

As it stands now, it hasn't officially been announces and the spaces are "just" up to date. A more aggressive HW platform could have created much more marketing buzz to actually make this product successful.

As it looks now, it just another product from Sony (Ericson) but doesn't look like it's high on Sony's priority list.

Playstation Phone Hacked! PS1 Emulator Running

Tech savvy readers are well aware of the Sony Ericcson device and it's been a slow push getting the desirability to market mainly due to lack of content and games that would make it useful. Some folks have mentioned that having to re-purchase a PS1 title just to play it again on your phone doesn't seem fair. That's all about to change, at least for one hacker.

It's a Playstation, of course it was hacked

Nitrowolf25400d ago

It's running on Android, should anyone really be surprised with this?

Information Minister5399d ago

It's not just the fact that this is an Android phone. This is an Android phone with an unlocked bootloader!

And this is old news by the way: http://n4g.com/news/756091/... .

JerryMatters5399d ago

Actually this is a reply to Information Minister.. the old story was the original hack story. This is a new story about HOW it's just been hacked to play PS1 games, kind of a completely different story. In your eyes, if one writer ever writes, PS3 hacked, then if it was ever hacked 'again' that would also be old news.

Information Minister5399d ago

The Xperia Play has been able to play PS1 games from day 1, hacked or otherwise. There's no shortage of PS1 emulators for android. That IS old news.

If anything, the real news here is that someone has found a new way to play those games by hacking the built-in PS1 emulator on the device, which is what the title should have made clear in the first place.

gameguidedog5399d ago

It kinda needed it. Sony should just get smart and release an emulator with free roms anyway. Or cheaper to buy roms, like $.50 each.

limewax5399d ago (Edited 5399d ago )

Beneficial how? giving the PS3/PSP community the middle finger in favor of the mobile crowd. Or dropping all prices and losing a lot of money

Edit: Also a PS1 game packs more value than an Ipod app, So app prices shouldn't really apply, if anything it should have the same availability as PSN price and content wise, As far as its hardware can carry it

Kamikaze1355399d ago

Lossing money how? for 50 cents a game, a lot more people would buy them. This would more than cover any cost it took to get those games on the phone.

But yeah, it would be a huge middle finger to PSP and PS3 owners.

limewax5399d ago

You have a solid point there, sales would likely outweigh the loss in money, Only conflict I could actually imagine would be maybe PS plus users would see their weekly free game value decrease. It would be a very good idea though, If I could pick up PS1 titles at that price I would certainly have a larger PS1 library on my PS3

bacrec15399d ago

Somebody needs to hack my ps3 so i can play my damn ps2 games.

CrescentFang5399d ago

Too bad, Sony wants you to buy their rereleases (which I'm sure why they removed PS2 compatibility...)

frelyler5399d ago

Or you know, own a ps2.

kreate5399d ago

i think its more like ..

the developers/publishers wants u to re-buy their re-releases.

if u want backward compatibility.
sony offered one for 399 when the 20gb fat dropped in price.
but ppl didnt buy it. oh well.

Cpt_kitten5399d ago (Edited 5399d ago )

ps2 + component cables = enjoying your games

always been the better option vs the BC PS3's

@STK026

that sentece makes no sense what so ever, did you play them on the ps3 when they ps2 first came out? think before you speak

STK0265399d ago (Edited 5399d ago )

How is it the better option? I mean, is there any advantage to play PS2 games on the PS2 rather than on the 60GB/20GB launch PS3s?

Edit
I don't see how my sentence makes no sense. You said that playing PS2 games on the PS2 is a better than playing them on the PS3, and I asked how it was any better. You and I never mentioned when PS2 games were played; by the way you commented, I assumed you meant that still to this day PS2 games play better on the PS2, and asked you in which way.

You compare the PS2 to the BC PS3, and when asked how the PS2 is the better choice, you answer by saying that the PS3 wasn't released when most PS2 games were being released, which is true, but completely irrelevant to the matter at hand.

ThatArtGuy5399d ago (Edited 5399d ago )

The PS3 has upscaling abilities that the PS2 doesn't. So if you're playing on an HDTV, the BC PS3 is the better option.

ChiVoLok05399d ago

Not to mention being able to play on an official PlayStation wireless controler.
