CES: Seeing PS3 innards can make you sad

Destructoid: There was a table at a pre-CES event tonight that was basically some circuit boards and some girls drinking wine. Naturally, I walked over.

wow so this just means that PS2 games will never be possible on Slim and other non PS2 playing models (unless they are PS store releases maybe)

pixelsword5617d ago (Edited 5617d ago )

Well, let's put it this in one of three ways:

A. 60gb is the way to go for that

B. wait for Sony to do re-makes or emulation

C. If Sony doesn't patch up the PS3, maybe someone will make an emulator and give it to Sony.

dp2774075617d ago

I bet nobody ever noticed my pic was of my ps3 put back together without the case

toaster5617d ago

PC has a hard time doing PS2 emulation, let alone the PS3. I wouldn't count on PS2 emulation on PS3 any time soon (or ever, most likely). Maybe Sony will release another model with the PS2 chipset. But until the PS4 or PS5, emulation on consoles is just a dream.

Shadow Flare5617d ago

We've already had an article that explains this.

They took out the ps2 hardware to reduce cost

Emulation has difficulties with some games and it's too much work for devs to recode old games

In the end it doesn't make them any money anyway, only second hand game stores

So the best solution for both parties was to remake old ps2 games and put them on the store. Sony make money from it and fans get a remastered version of their game. Backwards compatibilty isn't going to happen. All ps1 games are still backwards compatible though

Sarcasm5617d ago

Why in the world is this a surprise to anyone? Sony said it themselves they removed the chip for PS2 backwards compatibility since the Slim came out! *shakes head*

anh_duong5617d ago

personally i think sony was wrong to remove BC

Ranshak5617d ago (Edited 5617d ago )

@aah_duong

True removing BC was just sad. My launch model PS3 failed just few days ago. Although i can get another PS3 fat, i dont think it will be a good idea since it will probably be 2 years old already and hardware that old might have problems, since its been laying around unused.

So now i am forced to buy a PS3 slim. Problem with that is i lose all my PS2 backward compatibility. I have a whole library of PS2 games and all of them will be a waste now :(

I have decided to buy more of my games on PC now due to backward compatibility issues in the future. I dont want another mess like this if PS4 wont run my PS3 games. My new PS3 will be reserved for the Sony exclusives.

Shadow Flare5617d ago

Sony was wrong to remove b/c? Can Sony do anything right anymore? Go back to 2008 and everyone was begging Sony to cut the price of the ps3. Every article was about how ps3 was doomed and it's too expensive. The best way of cutting the price was removing b/c. Had they not done that, the ps3 would still be too pricey and people would be moaning. It's so easy to whine about things and even Sony fixes a problem people still whine

Ranshak5617d ago (Edited 5617d ago )

@Shadow Flare

Its very easy to defend Sony using the cost argument, however think of the people who have lost thousands usd worth of PS2 libraries.

I have nearly 100 PS2 games, all unplayable now. I surely wouldnt mind spending the extra 50-100usd to ensure my older games still work. Sony should have maintained 2 skus, one with BC and another without BC.

At this point i am even considering not to purchase any more multiplat PS3 games because i have no idea if they will work at all next gen. Also the fact they are just so expensive on the PS3, i bought about a dozen games on the PC on this Steam sale atleast i can rest assured most of them will keep working for a long while.

@Dymorphic

Its a collection i built over many years. I dont want my space cluttered with so many systems, i would prefer one system that does it all. I now have those same PS2 games running emulated on my PC, so why but that hardware again?

Dysmorphic5617d ago

@Ranshak: If you've got enough money to buy all those PS2 games and are upset at not being able to play them then go buy a goddamn PlayStation 2.

Shadow Flare5617d ago

Exactly, get a ps2 then, they cost peanuts. I bought my ps3 to play ps3 games. I've only ever played one ps2 game on my ps3 and I have a b/c ps3. B/C is a BONUS. Its not a necessity. In an ideal world it would be lovely to have b/c sure. But welcome to the real world. Sony are a business. If they included ps2 hardware in the ps3, they probably still wouldnt make a profit on each console sold. Sony need to make a profit and people were begging for a cheaper ps3. If you're THAT concerned with b/c, get a ps2. How can you not have a ps2 anyway? Everyone and their mother has a ps2.

There was an interview from one of these industry insiders that was taken down shortly after it was published which explained why Sony has gone down the remastered ps2 game route. Because basically, it's the most cost beneficial method for them. Sony get no money from used game sales. But they do from remastered ps2 titles, and fans get a better game through it. And I'm happy to get to play SOTC in HD with trophies. If you're THAT bothered, get a ps2. Geez. Like I said, Sony are a business, and you got your $299 ps3 now because of all this

Ranshak5617d ago (Edited 5617d ago )

@Shadow Flare

Did it ever occur to you that maybe i dont have a PS2 because mine died a long time ago and since i had a FAT PS3 i had BC.

Now since my FAT PS3 is dead, i am forced to purchase a slim PS3 dont really have an option. However i have decided no further purchases of multiplats on the PS3, because they are expensive and there is no gaurantee of BC on PS4.

Instead those multiplats will now be bought on PC. Its kinda cool PC picked up the slack where Sony failed and i can play my PS2 games emulated on PC. Why give Sony more money for a PS2 then?

@below

Getting remastered isnt an answer to BC, i have about a 100 PS2 games, i aint spending that much on getting those remastered. In fact i think remastered games will be a good excuse for Sony not to provide BC for PS4, since they can make money of PS3 remasters then.

Shadow Flare5617d ago (Edited 5617d ago )

lol don't get a ps2 then. I really could not care less what you do. I'm just explaining to you why Sony took that course of action. And the things I said is exactly what's happening right now. We're getting remastered ps2 titles

Edit-

.....why do you play ps2 games still anyway?? I have about 25 ps2 games and I haven't touch them for years because I play ps3 games. You talk like you play your ps2 games everyday??? Why do you care so much? If you're happy with pc emulation, do that then! Stop whining! Some ps3s were emulation enabled but games like GT4 had difficulties running on it. Ps2 hardware cost too much to be included in ps3. That's why try remaster ps2 titles now. Considering ps2 had full bc and ps3 originally did shows it's something Sony would like to do so maybe with the ps4 they'll try a little harder to make it more feasible. But unfortunalty at the moment, financially for Sony it's not feasible and theyre a company that needs to turn a profit. For the mean time Sony does have an option and it's called the ps2 and it costs peanuts. That's their option if you play ps2 games a lot (who does anymore). If youre not interested in that option, that's your choice. But the choice is there

AndrewRyan5616d ago

You know nothing about CPU's and processing if you think the PS3 can emulate the PS2.

You need 10x the processing power MINIMUM to emulate a console. That is why the PC would not be able to emulate the PS3, I would give it 10 years or so.

smoothdude5616d ago

While it is true that ps2 emulation is not perfect on the pc, I can easily play final fantasy x on my pc via emulation. It has truly come a long way IMHO.

Spenok5617d ago

Emulators could work. But if you look at how that worked for Microsoft, i can see it happening with first and second part games, and a few third parties, but not for every game.

Christopher5616d ago (Edited 5616d ago )

How do people think they were able to trim some of the cost of PS3 to get them down to $299?

Really, this is ancient news.

***Its very easy to defend Sony using the cost argument, however think of the people who have lost thousands usd worth of PS2 libraries. ***

And can still pay $50-89 for a system that can play every single one of those. I own two partially BC PS3s, but I also own a PS2 that is much better suited for playing my PS2 games. And I own almost 200 PS2 games.

People weren't willing to pay the extra price for the BC on top of the PS3. So, what did Sony do? They got the PS3 to a point where people would buy it. Their sales since the introduction of the Slim only proves that the decision was right.

HIGGI6665617d ago

dont count it out man. they said they can do emulation on the PS3 without the ps2 guts. but i think as the days go on B.C. is becomin less of an issue as it was when they first annonced they were pulling it.

RememberThe3575617d ago

They'll probably wait until they kill the PS2. Plus, they have a lot on their hands right now. They're trying to update the PSN to make it equal to Live and they have that whole pirating issue. I'd rather have them improve the PSN and try to find a way to fix the pirating issue before they work on solid PS2 emulation.

The_Claw5617d ago

how else were they going to cut the price in half? if you want to play ps2 games, buy a ps2 or a early model ps3

Pandamobile5617d ago (Edited 5617d ago )

I thought we already knew Sony purposely crippled the PS3's backwards compatibility?

I sure did.

LordMarius5617d ago

yeah, but for some reason people like to cling to false hope

HappyGaming5616d ago

Of course they purposely crippled it... it didn't happen by accident did it?

Lower PS3 Price.
(I didn't want a PS2 so I don't need to pay for extra PS2 hardware in my PS3)
Increase PS2 Sales.
(If I want a PS2 it is dirty cheap I will just buy one)

I don't think its fair for every PS3 owner to pay extra money for the few people that want PS2 compatibility.

If you have 1000 PS2 games go but a new PS2 Slim.

Lazyeye795617d ago

Me too but mine sounds like it might be reaching the end of its life, Going to have to get the slim. At least my brother still has his PS2.

MajestieBeast5617d ago

Mine is still purring like a kitten *knocks on wood* problem is i dont have my ps2 anymore it died on me thank god i could still save mgs3.

Eu5617d ago

I opened mine about 2 years ago, cleaned and changed all the thermal grease that was old, oiled the fans and such...I have a purring kitty working perfectly right here!

PS-I work with PC assembling/configuration/debug /programing so I Know what Im doing...hehehe

HappyGaming5616d ago

The 500GB (60GB) was the best.

jdrman20075616d ago

Why the disagrees?! My 80 gig is completely BC so i dont understand why so many ppl are saying the 60 was the best. Was the fully BC 80gig only around for a short time? I remember we got it around the time the MGS4 bundle came out and it had an 80gig that was not BC so maybe thats the source of the confusion...

ReBurn5617d ago

I loved mine, too. May it rest in peace. When it died I had it replaced with a 120GB slim, and I haven't missed PS2 BC. I thought I would, but I haven't.

Besides, you can get a used PS2 slim for next to nothing right now.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle24d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde31d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy32d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
