Microsoft throws us gaming news at CES

CES got started today with tons of announcements in terms of devices and products. But it wasn’t until Microsoft took the stage Wednesday night that gamers got any solid piece of news or a reason to pay attention.

Sweet. Lets just hope they get their exclusive lineup going and we'll be set for 2011

GWAVE5622d ago

I'm just wondering if this was REALLY the gaming news people wanted:

- AvatarKinect (a.k.a Home)
- Windows 7 phone (ccol, but not revolutionary)
- XBOX LIVE ON YOUR PHONE WITH ACHIEVEMENTS! Hahaha what? Can't believe people are buying into this

Shouldn't gaming news have games involved?

DualConsoleOwner5622d ago (Edited 5622d ago )

@Sanii.

dont get me wrong, it would be nice for MS to have more exclusives coming.

but we both know that is highly unlikely.

just remember TGS, GDC, and VGA. MS had plenty i mean PLENTY of chance to announce new games. but they didnt.

if more games are coming, its going to be Kinect shovel wares. almost the same treat that Wii got.

SixZeroFour5622d ago

to be fair tho, sony also had a weak showing with regards to gaming news at CES...and that avatarkinect was kinda like live mocap for avatars, pretty cool...could be a first step and a test run into devs not needing any mocap for animation (other than reaction to hits, death animation and cutscene/cinematics) and just having the character models do anything the player acts out in kinect

Bigpappy5622d ago

What I liked from windows phohe, is how well they intergrated Bing with the voice recognition. Everything was working so fast on that phone (think they were using WiFi). But making search work faster on phones is a big deal for me. That is one of the main things I use my phone browser for.

AAACE55622d ago

@GWAVE... Put your fanboy back in your pants and pay attention!

-Avatar Kinect doesn't equal a wanna be HOME! It is basically party chat except you pick different locations to meet and chat avatar to avatar. They are not creating a space where all different gamers can get together and meet from what I am understanding!

-How can you doubt the Windows phone thing? Sony will be doing the same thing with the Psp phone and you will love it because as long as it says Sony, you praise it!

-Xbox live on phone with achievements... You actually made fun of this, when in fact the Psp phone will offer trophys and you will be sucking Sony's d**k while you bow to them and say it's the greatest thing ever!

I used to think you were kinda cool on here... but now it seems like you're turning into a b*tch!

No Way5622d ago

I'm not really sure how you got to the conclusion..
That, uh, Avatar Kinect is anything like Home??

@Sanii- What difference does it make if the content is exclusive or not? Serious question. I play good GAMES...what does a game being exclusive to a certain console going to improve my the amount of fun I have with it?

@GWAVE- You and I both know that CES isn't a gaming-oriented show. Its for electronics in general...hence why its called the CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW. From a games perspective, no one has showed us anything worth hyping about.

I also find it quite amusing that you criticize Microsoft's lackluster gaming announcments regarding Kinect...yet I don't see you critcizing Sony's lack of any major gaming news.

The only thing that stood out was Uncharted 3 getting 3D support, but considering that at best 3% of PS3 owners currently own a 3DTV compared to the 8 million Kinects that have been sold in only two months...you tell me which announcement provided the bigger impact for the general gaming populace?

EDIT: So far I have two disagrees and still no one can explain why a game being exclusive or not has an affect of its entertainment value.

@Biggest- First of all, there WAS gaming news announced at CES for Microsoft. Unless your blind, I think ur able to see the list that GWAVE created. Kinect is a gaming motion device. Therefore: Kinect news = gaming news. And since u think ur such a smart guy... answer my question. Games are games...what does it matter whether its exclusive or not?

Biggest5622d ago

Calm down, deadreckoning666. GWAVE is on topic and you are WAY off. He's questioning this article. We know that CES isn't a gaming venue. We didn't expect any real gaming news from CES. The article claims there is gaming news coming from Microsoft at CES. There was none.

DigitalRaptor5622d ago

@ deadreckoning666 -
"I also find it quite amusing that you criticize Microsoft's lackluster gaming announcments regarding Kinect...yet I don't see you critcizing Sony's lack of any major gaming news."

Hmmm, perhaps that's because we already know what Sony is releasing in 2011. If Microsoft still hasn't announced anything regarding their games, when will they?

saoco5622d ago

sony did what they were supposed to do... show hardware, they dont just make games. anyways, im really hyped for sony's and toshiba 3d tv's without glasses, im glad im still holding my money...

Biggest5622d ago

In the specific case of Microsoft and their lack of exclusives:

Why own a Xbox 360 if every game on that system is available on every other system? Why care about a console that has the same games that everyone else has, when the other consoles have games that aren't on the other consoles? That is why it matters. More is better than less in the case of games. I want more games. I do not want fewer games. I don't want to get excited about fewer games.

What gaming news are you talking about, deadreckoning666? Are you talking about a chat room that uses Kinect? Kinect is a device. It is not a game. Chat is chat. It is also not a game. Windows 7 phone is a phone operating system. It is not a game. Xbox Live achievements are cookies for the ego. They are not games. In what part of this CES did YOU see games?

imTatsu5622d ago

Doesn't mean anything that it's called the "CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW". Just like how Comic Con isn't only about comics.

No Way5622d ago

You can make reasons for both why it's good, and why it don't matter.

For example, if all my friends own the x360 and none own the PS3.. But, the PS3 has every game the x360 has plus others, which would you choose? To play the games you can't play on the x360 or to play those games with your friends? Games are games. As long as they are good and fun, I could care less what system they are on..

That's jus my take on it.

Inside_out5622d ago (Edited 5622d ago )

Great points Dead...the same cast of characters from the PS3 camp with nothing to say...

@digital...Sony announced alot in 2010...where's all the games??...ahhh, right they are releasing in 2011...sure they are...I'll believe it when I see it.

@biggest...as usual is lost. Kinect is a gaming device, has sold extremely well and is a big part of 2011 for M$...you don't own a 360, why do you care.

Windows phone 7 features xbox connectivity in every way and also features GAMES that inter connect with your xbox like the Fable 3 example that Steve Ballmer used...if you read the article you would know that...again, your not on xbox live, you don't have a 360, you probably don't own a windows 7 equipped phone...you have no clue what your talking about...why do you care???

As for why anyone would want to own a 360 when all the games are available on the ps3...well Halo reach and the entire 360 library is only available on the 360. Fable 3 and the whole Fable library is available on 360. Gears 3 will be available exclusively on 360 as is the whole library of Gears games. Forza 3 as well as the whole library of Forza games are available on the 360...same for PGR. Alan Wake is one of the best games released this gen and yep...it's exclusive to xbox.

Why would anyone want to play the official Playstation magazine GOTY...Red Dead Redemption...in 640p with half the FPS and draw distance when it's available in 720 p with no issues on the 360. COD Black ops looks great how 360...hows it running on the PS3...and numerous other examples.

ALL multi-plats run, play and sell better on 360. Xbox live is better than PSN...Backwards compatibility...better controller...360 is better and the sales reflect that.

there's already so many f*ckin multiplatform games cming out this year to get, and you crying about exclusives?..... cry me a f*ckin river

Biggest5622d ago

I don't know about your financial situation, but wouldn't it be cool to have all those multi-platform games AND some solid exclusives? More games is better than less games, right?

iceman29295622d ago

@Biggest. Its not a money thing. Its a time thing. I've finally just had a chance to finish off new vegas and black ops over the xmas break. I still have a good 20 games that I bought last year/got for xmas that i need to start/beat. Buying the games is one thing. Being able to play them all is another. god damn real life taking up my gaming time.

No Way5622d ago (Edited 5622d ago )

Again. -.- As iceman2929 said,
It really doesn't matter how many exclusives there are,
If you cannot find the time to play them all, even half them.
Sony knows this, that's why they spread there games out.

theafroman5622d ago

Yea it was nothing interesting on the gaming side but hey at least they had something.

Spenok5622d ago

Something is always better then nothing i guess.

MajestieBeast5622d ago (Edited 5622d ago )

Uncharted 3 3D trailer was more exciting then this.

Below
This is the reason why. But it wasn’t until Microsoft took the stage Wednesday night that gamers got any solid piece of news or a reason to pay attention

user8586215622d ago

explain what this has to do with the article?

user8586215622d ago

8 million kinect sold!!! o_0

Whackedorange5622d ago (Edited 5622d ago )

Funny but according to vgcharts which is know for upjusting ms number they only have listed kinnect adventures at 5,4 million and last time i checked that is bundled with kinnect.

On the other hand the annoucnement of more kinnect titles is indeed gaming news even though i doubt it would be of intereset to the hardcore gamer.

CryWolf5622d ago (Edited 5622d ago )

Where was the new Gears of War 3 trailer at and new games for the xbox 360, nothing about them in MS keynote at all.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio29d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing29d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9229d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit29d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing29d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9229d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay31d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn231d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn231d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown31d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay31d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay31d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac30d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger31d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300031d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde31d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde31d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_30d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
