Mass Effect 2 is Overrated

People may have enjoyed their time with Mass Effect 2, but a particular game of the year deliberation brings light to the idea that maybe they are giving more credit to Mass Effect 2 than it deserves.

MariaHelFutura5605d ago

Mass Effect 2 is a great game. Mass Effect 1 is a better RPG. A blend of both would be perfect in my opinion. Which is what I hope ME3 will be.

FACTUAL evidence5605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

Oh, now the game is overrated since it's been announced for ps3, but last year before the reveal people were claiming it was the best RPG evAr.

Edit: deadreckoning666

Or maybe because there's been a lot of ME2 overrated articles on N4G lately?...but W/E guy..

Dart895605d ago

You read my mind bubs man.

ScentlessApprentice75605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

LOL, god is the gaming web journalist community full of a bunch of dim spastic bulbs. Now in the current generation the opinions expressed on videogames is not simply influenced by the inherent qualities and peculiarities found within a piece of software, but also the platform that such software finds itself on.

@ Disagreers

You're d*cking yourself around if you don't think this piece wasn't drafted to capitalize on the release of Mass Effect 2 for the Playstation 3. Such a critical approach to Mass Effect 2 was never found before (or at least never widely-published; this all could just be the product of the reality-bending fun house known as N4G.com)

Bnet3435605d ago

Or maybe, JUST MAYBE, the person who wrote the article is a PS3 fanboy who just played the demo, never having played ME1 or ME2 before, and judged the game based off of that. You know, that may very well be the case. Scroll down below to see one idiot who did just that.

mrcash5605d ago

My game of the year for 2010 hands down.

Hilarious. Why the turn around all of a sudden. We should get Scully and Mulder on this, the truth is out there...... but I have an idea as to why.

Biggest5605d ago

What is this I don't even. . .

Is this guy serious? LOL!!! All it took was one extra version of his favorite game to make it an overrated game.

WildArmed5605d ago

Well, I think ME2 was a great game, alot better and fun to play vs ME1.
I'd give it a solid 92.
And according to the Metacritic, it holds a 96.
So it's hardly overrated.
It's one of the best games I've played.
My cousin ran through the game like an TPS within 12 hours, while I played it -- searching every corner like an RPG nut I am -- took me about 32 hours (Note: I had all the DLC completed too).

lol, but you can't really over rated Bioware's work.
They only make awesome games.
take DA:O for example.. one of the BEST RPGs I've played this gen. (a solid 96 from me (: )

I really loved ME2..
the 3 things that stuck out the most were:
1. Amazing story (main and sub plots)
2. Ability to change events, dialogue system
3. A great, GREAT combat system. (TPS if you wanna call it)

I can't wait for ME3.

InfectedDK5605d ago

Wow bitmob is really a joke

grailly5604d ago (Edited 5604d ago )

@skv007
can you explain what was so great about the story in mass effect 2? I never really got why people were saying it was good, the writing, the gameplay and the dialog system were awesome, but the story?

SPOILERS (kinda):

It wasn't really much deeper than: there are bad guys, I need a good team, get a good team, beat the bad guys.

/SPOILERS

the universe was very cool though, maybe that's what people are talking about when they say "story"?

WildArmed5604d ago (Edited 5604d ago )

@grailley

Oh, well that's not exactly what I meant by the story.
I meant the writing as a whole.
The whole environment has a really rich history that is really engrossing.
I guess I wasn't clear when i wrote just 'story'.
I apologize for the incorrect word.
Shepard's story itself was hardly the focal point for me.
But it was the histroy depth that bioware puts into every game that gets me.
I always have had a habit of calling that 'story'.
The example i often use is DA:O, the background story was OMGBBQSAUCE.
Otherwise the story was quite simple:
Get help, kill bad stuff.
But the depth of the enviroment, the history, everything really got to me.
every little thing you read or everyone you talk to has something interesting to say.
there are may hidden legends you get to find out in such ways (and even end those legends).

that's pretty much what I meant by story.
The detailed buildup of each character and environment you visit was astonishing.
(that's what I meant by MAIN (Shepard's story) and all the sub-plots you can find by exploring the galaxy. (they may not be necessarily be playable.. they just maybe pieces of codecs that retell a great piece of the past)

I agree. As a shooter ME2 is better than ME1, but as and RPG ME1 is much better than ME2. BioWare needs to bring the RPG back to Mass Effect because those elements were pretty lame in the second especially compared to ME1. I love them both though!

@Maria: Thats a great point! Thats shit took way too long, who on thier design team thought it was a good idea to make it soooooo sloooow.

MariaHelFutura5605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

My friends and I decided we`re not getting ME2 again for PS3....because if I probe another planet for metals, I`ll literally loose my mind.

Myze5605d ago

I thought landing the Mako and searching for the stuff in ME1 was far worse. However, those are two of the only things I didn't like in both games (any other quibble is very small).

If they want to put in some type of mini-game or extra exploring to gather resources for some side-quest/achievements/credit s, they really should try and make it actually fun.

WildArmed5605d ago

@Maria

I remember Bioware talking about how they improved that for the port among some other little things.
I may have it confused w/ something else, but i do remember them saying that they changed the 'probing' system for the Ps3 edition of Me2.

I didn't mind probing.. it was costly as hell, but over all I had enuf material to get me all mee upgrades in no time <3

Persistantthug5605d ago

and the game is overrated.

I'd describe the game as a BAD 3RD Person Shooter with some watered down RPG elements thrown in.

I was not impressed at all and I was let down based on everyone swearing how awesome the game was.

Maybe the story is good, I'm not sure, but the actual gameplay is about as good as a 1st generation game from 2006.

Not impressive.

--my take

Bnet3435605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

Judging a game, let alone an RPG, froma demo. You fail at gaming brah.

Edit: Paradoxical ... I think you might blow someones brain with that one dude.

RememberThe3575605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

A game being over rated and you not liking it are a little different. I do he same thing though with Halo4 and GTA4 I didn't like them as much so I called them over rated. In reality I didn't like some things that other did like. That doesn't mean they're wrong, it just means I don't agree with them. It's kind of a paradoxical thought process, but it makes sense.

Arup025605d ago

You are a genius. Play the full game first. If you got the money play on the PC, and you will see that this is one of the best games this gen.

Sarcasm5605d ago

What people fail to realize is that it's not the "shooting" mechanics or even the RPG elements that make Mass Effect so great, it's the overall universe and immersive world that they created is what makes the game so compelling. It's also how they tie in a lot of things from the first Mass Effect as far as story goes.

So to judge ME2 based on the demo alone is wrong.

Persistantthug5605d ago

When I played the Infamous Demo, I knew the game was a winner.

When I played Killzone Beta, I knew it was a winner.

Mass Effect 2 doesn't even come close.

Maybe its not fair or whatnot, but I expect big things from a game touted so highly.

So far, I'm let down enough to just forget the game altogether, or make it a CRAIGSLIST trade down the line, because I certainly don't want to spend my hard earned money on MEDIOCRE GAMEPLAY.

palaeomerus5605d ago

" When I played the Uncharted 2 demo, I knew the game was a winner...When I played the Infamous Demo, I knew the game was a winner. "

Does anyone but you really give a damn what you consider a winner or not from playing demos? I know I don't. :)

If you have only owned a PS3 this gen and you play ME2, you may not understand what all the fuss is about.

You have to realize that every 360 exclusive is teh best game evar until it hits the PS3 (after it's already been released on PC, that is)

lol LOL

MagicAccent5604d ago

I agree.
Life is overrated too.

Also, sex and indoor plumbing.

Every game is overrated to someone. So...I don't see the point of this.

Anyone can make the same argument for the Halo, Uncharted, God of War, and Call of Duty franchises. Its all opinion.

@FACTUAL evidence- Or maybe its just this guys opinion? Not everythings a conspiracy....unless your crazy.

morganfell5605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

Did I miss the article bitmob wrote about Mass Effect 2 being overrated BEFORE it was announced for the PS3? After all, how reliable or informative could an article be from a site that has taken a year to decide?

At the end of the article the author states he isn't bashing the game. Which then leads to but one and inevitable conclusion if that is in fact true. The story title was designed as a cheap hit generator. Again I ask, how good or reliable could the article be? Having read it I can honestly answer, not very.

EyeContact5605d ago

simple, it became overrated after it went multi

Seferoth755604d ago

It's been multi platform.

What you have is a case of fanboys on BOTH sides switching side on their position on the game. MS fanboys who once loved it will say it isnt so good any more and others will say the 360 version is superior version and the only one worth owning some Sony fanboys who once said it wasnt that good will now go one of two ways. Completely hate it and say it doesnt compare to the games on their console. Second would be to proclaim the PS3 version the superior version of the game and the only one worth playing.

Honestly I am kinda getting sick of the same game only different settings and stories. KOTOR.Jade Empire, Dragon Age, and ME. Just starting to feel like more of the same to me

karl5605d ago

well.. u gotta admit it was overrated at the moment cuz it was an xbox exclusive

it was really great game but not a masterpiece

Theyellowflash305605d ago

I have the game on 360.... Im getting the game on PS3 ...... That crap doesnt matter to me.

I love Mass Effect for the decisions you make, the expansive worlds, the powers, the replay value choosing different classes, The story, being able to carry over your save file with your data and have your decisions shape your play through. There is many things to love about Mass Effect.

I dont think its overrated. I love RPGs and Mass Effect in my opinion has brought new life into RPGs with what its done with the story and carrying over your save file.

Arup025605d ago

I actually laughed because of the title.

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine518d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast518d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman518d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

SimpleSlave766d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan766d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave766d ago (Edited 766d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
