Associated Content: Why Kinect is Beating Move

This winter has seen the two other console makers introducing their own takes on motion controls. Microsoft has released their Kinect add-on to the Xbox 360 while Sony is trying to expand their appeal with the Move for the PlayStation 3. This shift effectively confirms motion controls as the control scheme of the future and further validates Nintendo's bold gamble.

Move and Kinect released roughly at the same time heading into the holiday season. All eyes in the industry has been on the two new devices and how they would impact the sales of the so called HD twins, and what impact they would have on Wii sales.

Advertising.

It's sad that we need an article to talk about - nay, brag about - how an advertising budget is shoving broken technology on the public.

Oh. Associated Content. That explains it...

Agent-865533d ago

You're right about advertising....$500 million can make a difference. Sony rather invest that kind of money in 1st party studios and great exclusives. Look at the incredible PS3 line-up for 2011 (it's going to hurt alot of people's wallets). I know which one I'd rather support. Hint: I went with the games.

tigertom535533d ago

I tried it and fell in love with the technology and different kind of gameplay that move and wii just cant do, full body tracking..

nsnsmj5533d ago

Why? Simple....Marketing. Bam! That's the answer.

Move feels like something people are already familiar with. Sony didn't market this to show the differences between the move and the wiimote. Therein lies their mistake. The move just doesn't seem "New".

Kinect is being marketed as something new, when in reality and in my opinion it is not. It's simply human nature to want what is SEEMINGLY new and unknown.

digitalivan5533d ago

This was a waste of time. 2 pages for this cheap opinion post? And I am fairly sure he is talking only about the USA.

"Move has failed to differentiate itself from the already available tech in the market."
Neither motion control is innovative. Roughly put: Move is Wiimote HD, and Kinect is PSeye HD. Not that it matters anyways.

Agent-865533d ago (Edited 5533d ago )

I agree digitalivan and have to add big "who cares"? Motion gaming has absolutely no appeal to me and could care less on who is winning. Never bought a Wii and never will. Why would I buy a motion control setup now? I'm primarily a PC gamer because I like the precision that a keyboard/mouse gives you (the better graphics, resolution and frame rates are also a definite plus). I also own a PS3, but the standard DS controller is superior to the Move in my view. Of the three, I think the Move has the most appeal since it has 1:1 tracking and can be used in core games (still, not sold on it, though). The other two (Wii and Kinect) rely too much on gestures and are just too inaccurate for my tastes.

Hozi895533d ago

Although Move does seem to be like the Wiimote, it does improve a lot in terms of precision.Plus the games are more innovative: MAG, Killzone 3, and hopefully TES:Skyrim!

Agent-865533d ago (Edited 5533d ago )

@Hozi89, I do see the appeal of the Move and it could be a possible purchase for me in the future. However, I don't like how it's implemented in the games you mention (MAG, KZ3). I like the aim to stay centered and the camera to move with the cursor (like standard FPS, TPS games). It looks really weird to me when the cursor can move around the screen without the camera moving and how you have to move it to the side of screen to get the camera to move. Looks very disorienting to me. If it could have a camera lock, then it would have more appeal to me. Does anyone know if camera lock is an option in these games?

tigertom535533d ago

who in the hell really want to play fps with a motion controller, that not innovation.

sleepy35533d ago

@tiger.

Couldn't agree more. Time for this motion nonsense to just roll over and die. ALL OF THEM

.....although i did play some kinect with couple of friends (both guys and girls) and we did the kinect sports thing and it was great fun for everyone....for five minutes.

Over 2 mil sold in Europe in 2 months. It is not just "implusive Americans". If it is avertising that sold Kinect, why is that a bad thing and who's fault is it if Sony did not succeed in that department?

The guy sited innovations and newness of gameplay that propeled Kinect, and the similarities to the Wii as the charecteristic that held back the Move.

This is not a Move bashing article!

You may not care who is winning, but it is still news worthy to look at why one is more successful. It also gives good perspective at where the industry might be headed. If Kinect continues to grow at its present rate, Sony and Nintendo will have something like it or a counter. They all want to sell to a wide audiance for obviuos reasons.

cemelc5533d ago (Edited 5533d ago )

Except that there wasnt any innovation in any tittle for kinect, that wasnt alredy shown by the eye in the ps2 era.

tigertom535533d ago

if kinect is not innovation you really never played it..

cemelc5533d ago (Edited 5533d ago )

What are you talking about??? are you a new gamer this gen???

Everything of the first wave of kinect games has been done with the eye, thats not a fanboy coment.

Im gald for the succes of this, perhaps kinect 2.0 will be more hardcore, but innovative??? No, point me where so i can see the drastic change from ps eye that warrants the innovative banner.

The main success of kinect is that it made the technology Mainstream and thats not a kinect success, its a marketing success on MS part.

Xfanboy5533d ago

better marketing that's all... Sony could of did it with pseye but they didn't..

tigertom535533d ago

it would of been a wast and not designed for a that kind of market...

Mr Tretton5533d ago

Lots of advertising, plus blinding gimmick = $$$

everyone that I know that has bought it has been very satisfied

PlayStation Move Controller Used to Perform Surgery on a Pig That Was 5,780 Miles Away

A group of surgeons made headlines after they managed to perform an endoscopic procedure on a pig located in Hong Kong by using PlayStation controllers. It involved the use of a PS5 DualSense controller as well as a PlayStation Move controller.

jznrpg501d ago

There is at least a few good jokes that could come from that title

Cacabunga500d ago

Yet another powerful device Sony gave up supporting. KZ3 move was one of the best motion controller implementation ever

just_looken500d ago

Right the ps move was awesome i have the gun thing from killzone still.

Relientk77501d ago

That's really cool. It's crazy something like that is possible with gaming controllers 1000's of miles away.

Lexreborn2500d ago

Guess that submarine should’ve used move controllers instead of logitech
