Some obvious and some insightful stuff here. I think the central theme to making a great sequel is attempting to render the original obsolete. All the great sequels do like Assassin's Creed 2 and Diablo II.

Come to think of it, you're right. If a sequel has genuinely improved upon the original while retaining the same feel, nobody will want to play the original (except, perhaps, for story purposes).

If devs want to learn how to make a good sequel the should buy uncharted 2 or god of war 3.Study the game and i bet u there prayers will b answered.

look at Valve, they always know how to make good sequels. there games are usually always different looking then the previous

Valve nails everything on the list... except for lesson 1, which is having small development cycles.
=x

.. Or, well actually, it says "When you take six years to make a game, it had better be the pinnacle of game design." and that's usually true for a Valve game anyways.

Valve makes a lot of franchises. They can be forgiven.

Besides, it was only a year between L4D and its sequel.

Loved Ecco on Megadrive/Genesis. Diving out of the water was always a fun feeling, and the whole 'vibe' while playing/exploring was pretty chill and special.

Always hoped we'd get a proper 3D sequel with modern-tech water-graphics and physics. (Same wish for Wave Racer btw).

It was pretty chill until you get to the last 2 or 3 levels. My god Welcome to the Machine was brutal.

You can always play an emulated Ecco: Defender of the Future on Flycast, or if you have a real Dreamcast play it there.

This makes me smile. I hope that the game and especially the soundtrack keep the same relaxed vibe.

Rebel_Scum1d 22h ago

That is amazing news. Keep it level based or metroidvania but dont go the roguelike route and it should be good.

Now do Shining Force, the small but passionate fanbase wants a new game so badly.

That brings me back. I know I have a couple copies on Sega consoles but they’re in a box somewhere.
I may check out a new game if done well
