WoW player kicked from guild for being deaf

It seems being deaf can actually get you into a bit of trouble with one guild in the World of Warcraft. User "Unwelcomed" explained that he recently was involved in an accident, resulting in his hearing being damaged significantly. His guild members didn't take the scenario lightly and removed him permanently due to his disability.

the guild leader is the definition of a high douchebag entity

We actually have a few people in our guild that are either partly or completely deaf. As long as they research the fight (just like the rest of us have to,) they are permitted to raid. If some bosses require you to stand in a certain area, they are told in chat where to go. These people generally better at not standing in fire, running when they have to, and just being more aware.

No one needs a viop program to raid. I've run plenty of raids without it. It's just easier to explain by speaking that it is by typing.

Your guild leader is lazy and ignorant.

Hell, they don't even have to do that. DBM flashes nice big warning to let you know when to do what and to whom.

Side story, I used to play BF2 back before WoW, and we had a deaf guy on our squad. This was at a TWL level, so it wasn't just hop on and kill stuff. We had no problem what so ever with him. We just had a clanmate that wasn't in the match type to him on vent. As for wow, I've had man deaf guildmates over the years, and if anything, they listen way better then the ones that can actually listen on vent.

One of the better players on my realm is deaf, but he plays only occasionally. Some people may feel confused when dealing with a new situation or an individual who has a unique problem. I know this because I have a disability of my own that prevents me from doing alot of things, and this game is a great outlet to do those things I couldn't otherwise do.

I have even had in game friend that I had been playing with for years, who after I told him that I was disabled, eventually ditched me and made fun of my disability. Needless to say, I put HIM on ignore and will never speak to him again.

But you know what? It doesn't bother me as much because I have alot of RL friends that know I'm a cool dude and i enjoy hanging out with them. My disability is quite frankly a non issue.

Anyway, I just wanted to relay my story to you to let you know that you have to pick your friends carefully and don't let the jerks get you down. Sometimes I do, but I use them as a motivational factor and it works well. Anyway, cheers bud!

We've had a deaf player in my guild. Had her in raids, and did not enforce the "vent required" rule, because obviously that would just be stupid. There were some issues, but we assigned a willing player to type out instructions to her prior to boss fights an such, and things usually worked out. There were times that she didn't do something the right way, because it was changed on the fly, but all of us were fine with that even if it caused a wipe.

I have to say though, that a lot of times we did tend to forget about her in five mans or guild, and chat away on vent. I'm sure it caused her to feel a bit left out at times-- to be doing things with us, but to have almost nothing being said in /p for the length of the encounter. It's a tough situation. We all agree that we like her there and are more than willing to have her in our runs, but we sometimes just forgot to communicate in other than vent.

Eventually, she played less and less, and I haven't seen her online a while. I assume that she may have felt a bit isolated, just because of the communication issue. : /

Being kicked over it though, is pretty damned heartless. I'm sorry for your accident and the asshats in your guild. Remember that there are still nice people out there that are willing to adapted to let you keep playing, but that at times they might seem aloof or unempathetic without intending too.

I wish you luck in finding a new guild with good people in it.

Agreed. Gaming should be open to everyone. Remember the blind Kid that managed to beat Zelda: Ocarina of Time a few years ago? Turns out that human beings, even when facing unique challenges, are capable of amazing things.

RedDragan5618d ago

Although I think the folks who booted him are complete jerks, I think that with the money coming in to Activision/Blizzard... they should implement speech/text.

They have the budget, they have no excuse worthy of not doing it.

deafwing5618d ago

what else can I say ... wow
I thought you could type in that game?

AndrewRyan5618d ago

I couldn't stand raiding with a deaf guy. 1 reason: He won't be able to hear and communicate! You can't type what to do during a raid.

wow that post is heart touching :( his so called friends are fags, and the so called guild leader is a fag too.

Jack-Pyro5618d ago

Assholes yes, scum of the earth possibly, Fags they are not...Don't use that word bro.

FiftyFourPointTwo5618d ago (Edited 5618d ago )

Poor guy. I kinda know what it feels to have an ear problem. I have ringing in my ears (tinnitus) for the past 3 weeks now due to sinus allergy, although mine is pretty tolerable and I can ignore it pretty well. But there are times I cant have a good night sleep. Already went to the doctor and gave me some antibiotics, anti allergy and a nasal spray. Will be going back for a follow up check up after 10 days. :|

Hopefully the dude finds some nice and welcoming guild soon.

Kran5618d ago (Edited 5618d ago )

I mean I can see how it can be a problem but this is just the lowest of the low. If I was that person, id contact blizzard and get them all banned. And do these guys not use guild chat?!

I feel sorry for the guy hope the guild leader gets deaf too...

CrzyFooL5618d ago

"Everyone was pretty supportive for about 5 minutes."

Not gonna lie . . .I lol'd

Bobbykotickrulesz5618d ago

Me too lol.

But still, being deaf would suck.

Speed-Racer5618d ago

What a shame... text chat would have been appropriate... dont know why they had to be so arrogant

hellraiserpop5618d ago

Well many guilds do rely on vent when figuring out how to beat a boss the first time. Text is simply not fast enough for first encounters.

Baka-akaB5618d ago (Edited 5618d ago )

that's quite a bull reason anyway .

Contrary to what they want to tell themselves , while voice chat is useful ... WoW is hardly a game strategic enough to require constant micromanagement and vent , to an extent crazy enough to boot a deaf friend .

Urmomlol5618d ago

The worst part about that story is the presumption that you need vent in order to clear Naxx.

Honestly, you can smash your face against the keyboard while using /follow and still be able to clear 10-man.
