It Is Just a Beta

Extending the DC Universe Online beta to more gamers should have been a boon to the new MMO . Some beta testers recall their experiences with heightened excitement while others make disparaging remarks about a game that has not been released to the public yet. Instead of spending time trying to improve the game, people are spreading premature criticism. Why not spend more time on the beta forums and less time putting down a property that is not done yet?

I always try to give games the benefit of the doubt in beta, but I have rarely seen large strides made from beta to release.

Well is a beta, not an alpha, beta is to test the game, make final tweeks and iron out minor bugs other than that is the final build.

Pretty rare to see a mayor overhaul in a beta, aside many of this "betas" are publicity stunts by developers in order to get hype.

THILLREBORN5600d ago

I'm gonna semi agree with you on the testing for issues but as far as the publicity stunt I would say your incorrect. A developer will never know what end consumers will do when given a vast sand box envirement to play it and there is little to no way to test everything in something that massive...testers can only do so much. So how do you test all of this stuff you do closed betas for your first round of testing to catch any huge bugs. Take the info back address those issue and then open the beta up in a more polished form for a larger audiance to work out the smaller issues and network structure out.

Simply saying that a developer is trying to get publicity stunt is approaching the concept of betas with a negative mindset...I personally enjoy betas because they give gamers a chance to try out a game early and it allows us to have an impact on the final product which in a way is what all gamers want...to have our voices heard :)

Betas are a great way for devs to see how their game and login servers behave under heavy loads.

If betas are handled correctly the people in charge will hire staff to patrol the forums and actually listen to what fans are saying about their game. This information is priceless, its a shame so few studios fully understand this.

edit: silly typo

Soldierone5600d ago

Medal of Honor is a good example of what a beta will do. They revamped the controls, had a little tweaks here and there, and fixed the servers. They didn't actually go in and make an entiely new game, as its too late for that.

Xusuyzus5600d ago

seen GOW3 lately,..or MAG
Just sayin'

I think they will sort things out with DC,.. Gameplay is great and actually fun for an mmo,..

Baka-akaB5600d ago (Edited 5600d ago )

i disagree , i've seen quite a few games , and actually mmos , make huge stride between beta and retail .

Dont get fooled by fps "demos"

Not every game is going to pull a FF14 . Hell even stuff like Warhammer online , always rather average , changed a lot between beta and launch

NegativeCreepWA5600d ago

I bet most of those games had betas long before release, in my experience betas that take place within a month of release don't have enough time to fix the issues. Betas should take place months before release, not the month leading up to it.

Baka-akaB5600d ago

i never said otherwise . And guess what in this particular case ? DCUO had a closed beta before the recent psn+ and pc wave .

Soldierone5600d ago

Probably because Activision treats beta as demo. Remember the COD4 "beta" that happened to be exclusive to a certain console.

Its a common fact that a majority of "beta" testers are either too young, thus they get a beta purely to say "ha i got the game early" or they dont understand the term "beta" so they criticize without actually helping. A majority of gamers probably fill both categories.

I remember the R2 beta, it actually had alot of good criticisim and Insomniac improved it a lot between stages. Sure the random idiots ran about bashing it, but it had tons of people on the official forums helping improve it.

Bleucrunch5600d ago

Betas are intended for educated gamers who make rational based criticism in order for the developer to fix them before they release....Soldier one you have made a great point...bubbles for you.

Spawn-KING5600d ago

just hate seeing LVL 20 players picking on players that are LVL 10 and below .

THILLREBORN5600d ago

I've only played on the PVE worlds so I haven't dealt with that yet plus I'm level 20...if I see it I will squash those other 20's like bugs :)

soundslike5600d ago (Edited 5600d ago )

isn't it a fairly quick process to hit max level though? at least it becomes a level playing field quicker than most PVP servers on mmos where you have people with years of leveling above you.

ll_UNDERSCORE_ll5600d ago

This was a good read, I have a few ppl on my friends list who have certain posted comments on their gamecard like " DCU sucks" or "DCU unplayable" . Then again their on COD:BO religiously regardless of the migrating host and disconnects , loving every second of it. Go figure .
I'm definitely getting DCU , regardless of opinions . Since I'm a comic fan I want to try it to form my own opinion . how long will I support it? depends on the updating content.
off-topic - I hope there is a difficult trophy set for it , to keep me interested if everything fails.

MMOs In 2021 Retrospective: Console Edition

WTMG's Thomas Medina: "As far as I’m concerned, console MMOs have always been in a weird place. PC is where the main game is most popular. MMOs were born there, work best there, and have the vast majority of titles. Mobile is then next in line, with touchscreens and portability that adds something new while functioning well. Console gaming, on the other hand, is not portable (for the most part). Plus, it uses a controller, which is not the best instrument when your control scheme requires a thousand buttons and a cursor. That being said, there is an audience, and where there’s money to be made, publishers find a way. So here we are with some of the biggest console MMO games and how I feel they handled 2021. "

Best Superhero Video Games Available Right Now

From Xfire: "A lot of video games are designed to make players feel like a superhero. However, very few actually feature superheroes or have players take on the role of a superhero. What makes this even worse is that there are even fewer superhero video games that can be considered good."
