PSUNI: DC Universe Online Beta Impressions

PSUNI writes "Thanks to my PlayStation Plus subscription, I was able to get my hands on the DC Universe Online beta. DC Universe Online is an MMORPG developed by Sony Online Entertainment Austin and published by Sony Online Entertainment. Create a hero, and jump into the battle against Brainiac and his minions. Fight alongside iconic DC heroes such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and the Green Lantern, and even iconic DC villains such as Lex Luthor, Cat Woman, The Joker, Sinestro, Bane, and more. Here are my impressions of the beta so far."

sway__z5620d ago

I'm a Plus member, and when I downloaded DC online, it kept refusing to get past 'Not enough space, please free up 5460meg to proceed'??

I have at least 25GB spare!!

Anyone know what's up?

NewMonday5620d ago

Something must be wrong in your system, the beta needs 16-17 giga.

Or something could be wrong with the download, did you try to delete the download and game data and do it again?

DavePSU5620d ago

I never had this issue -- but I sent their support an email to see if this is a reoccurring issue with the game or not.

DA_SHREDDER5620d ago (Edited 5620d ago )

Reformat your ps3 dude. It seems like you have a disk drive error.

BTW, DCU is a day one purchase.

Spitfire_Riggz5620d ago (Edited 5620d ago )

Yeeeahhh No. Thats why I traded in my 360 for a PS3. Paying to play 1 game is just as/more ridiculous. I would like to point out that if it was free it would be day 1 for me as well.

But seriously with the 2011 lineup I wouldnt even be able to afford a monthly fee if I wanted to.

xTruthx5620d ago

Just buy a 500GB HDD, I though it would take many months for it to get full but i have had mine like for 3 months i think and it only has 60GB's left xD.

RedRedSuitSDF5620d ago

Sounds like you have about 3 PS3 games installed on your HD! :D

Simon_Brezhnev5620d ago

i think you need 32 gb. 16gb space for downloading and another 16gb for installing.

xTruthx5620d ago

Nah, the beta takes a total of 17GB's

Simon_Brezhnev5620d ago

yeah its 17gb after the patches and the second update.

TroyAndAbed5620d ago

Lol. Simon...it's 2010. I remember when the PS3 came out, all my friends thought you needed however much space it said a demo took up...PLUS that same amount of space to install. Haha...how dumb would that be?

Godmars2905620d ago

It may need 30GB of space to download 15GB. Space for storage and gathering/compiling.

hazardman5620d ago (Edited 5620d ago )

why you got disagrees, i don't know. maybe your the only PS3 user having problems(can't be)!!

15 bucks a month for that? Looks way boring.

NewMonday5620d ago

your comment is a classic definition of "sour grapes"

DavePSU5620d ago

I think it really depends if you're into MMOs or not. Obviously paying $50 for the retail package and then paying $15/m after is something to consider in terms of if it is worth it or not.

RedRedSuitSDF5620d ago (Edited 5620d ago )

@newmonday... Not really. It didn't look fun at all to me. I wouldn't pay to play this game on PC either. Game looked really boring, and looks like you'll be doing the same stuff over and over again when it comes to battles. Same moves, same style.

Funny to see that though. I'd imagine you have a problem with people that pay for Xbox Live monthly, which let's you play more than 1 game a month, for less than 15 dollars a month... but I have sour grapes for saying that 15 dollars to play 1 game a month online, that looks boring as hell... that's sour grapes. Uhmmm.. ok. *rolls eyes*

ps.. how can DavePSU, have 2 disagree's for what he wrote? There are some hardcore Sony fanboys on this site man... Jesus.

NewMonday5620d ago

@miDnIghtEr20C
"looks like you'll be doing the same stuff over and over again when it comes to battles. Same moves, same style."

This just shows you know nothing about the game, there are dozens of upgrades and unlocks in the game, and the powers system is actually complex. The beta was very addictive.

There are bugs in it, but that's why it's called "beta", it's to help find them and fix them.

As for the price, I agree it’s high, it could be the reason I stop playing it, but I will get it initially.

Xusuyzus5620d ago (Edited 5620d ago )

dude,.. This game is so damn fun, I am kind of afraid to play it,.. even traversing terrain is so addicting,..

Imagine you move so fast that you run on the walls of skyscrapers ,..sometimes I just fuck-around running and jumping over buildings,..because controls are so tight,..

If you get bored soloing,..missions, you group up and talk shit with people and kill the boss or something ,.. together,..

guys did anyone notice,.. that after the patch,.. IT GOT WAY HARDER !! Even at level 20,. two of us, had trouble doing even way lower level stuff,..

Darth_Bane795620d ago

Yeah, but I also learned to level up faster now, how many characters have you made so far?

Darth_Bane795620d ago

I think that what you just did is the same thing the majority of reviewers do when giving a score to a game: watch a video and maybe play 5 minutes of the game.. LOL!

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5620d ago (Edited 5620d ago )

The ps3 version is just really glitchy. I've been stuck on the manhunter mission for days because it always glitches when i play it. Doesnt look like it'll get fixed. I think I'll go with the pc version. First time ever for me buying the pc version of a game.

Other than that the game is really fun. I mean addictive. I dropped Demon's Souls, MGSPW, AND The Fight just to play the beta.

xTruthx5620d ago

You do know the pc beta has glitches too right ? look at their forums, and pc is more likely to have cheaters

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5620d ago

Tis true. I'll also be missing out on trophies. But another advantage from the pc version is that it runs smoother. The menus pop up a lot faster, and slightly better grafx. I just hope my ATI Radeon 5450 is up for the task. I heard it wasnt the best for gaming but gets the job done in 1080p 60fps. And from what I've seen on youtube it should be fine.

BattleAxe5620d ago

PC games always have cheaters.

xTruthx5620d ago

ah, Im getting it for ps3 cus all my friends are getting it for that system. If not, I would of gone pc too

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5620d ago (Edited 5620d ago )

Beta code means a lot of glitches.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5620d ago

Yea but it's not just the glitches that bug me ( no pun intended). The pc version runs a lot smoother and faster.

SIX5620d ago

This game was built with controller in mind. I can't see myself getting this for the pc after playing it on my PS3.

SIX5618d ago

Yes but has it been detailed that the game will support controller natively? I know that there are controller mapping programs out there but those never work nearly as well as native controller support. If it does support controller then I might have to consider PC. Either way, my point is that I would rather play controller for this game.

I've played about a dozen hours of the beta and personally I'm already bored of it. If you're an MMO or DC fan you'll likely love it. If MMOs haven't grasped your attention in the past this one probably won't either.

MMOs In 2021 Retrospective: Console Edition

WTMG's Thomas Medina: "As far as I’m concerned, console MMOs have always been in a weird place. PC is where the main game is most popular. MMOs were born there, work best there, and have the vast majority of titles. Mobile is then next in line, with touchscreens and portability that adds something new while functioning well. Console gaming, on the other hand, is not portable (for the most part). Plus, it uses a controller, which is not the best instrument when your control scheme requires a thousand buttons and a cursor. That being said, there is an audience, and where there’s money to be made, publishers find a way. So here we are with some of the biggest console MMO games and how I feel they handled 2021. "

Best Superhero Video Games Available Right Now

From Xfire: "A lot of video games are designed to make players feel like a superhero. However, very few actually feature superheroes or have players take on the role of a superhero. What makes this even worse is that there are even fewer superhero video games that can be considered good."
