In this editorial, originally printed in the December 2010 issue of Game Developer magazine, EIC Brandon Sheffield discusses the strengths and weaknesses of Microsoft and Sony's new motion controllers, and how their dependence on proximity could influence their demographic.

A group of surgeons made headlines after they managed to perform an endoscopic procedure on a pig located in Hong Kong by using PlayStation controllers. It involved the use of a PS5 DualSense controller as well as a PlayStation Move controller.
That's really cool. It's crazy something like that is possible with gaming controllers 1000's of miles away.

Air Conflicts: Secret Wars debuted in 2011, and later updated for modern consoles. However, it's the PlayStation 3 edition that stands out.

Joy Ride Turbo launched 10 years ago today. The first title was Xbox Kinect exclusive, yet this sequel failed to support the device at all.
Sony hasn't aimed it solely at families and have shown possible integration with most types of games at launch. Meanwhile with Kinect while MS is promising it will be for gamers as well as families the main focus at launch was strictly on the latter.
Good read that.
"In order to get Move or Kinect to recognize you correctly, you've got to be about seven-to-eight feet away from your television. "
False, at least concerning Move. I'm about 5 feet from my TV, it works perfectly. I can also use it sitting down.
"Take the entire nation of Japan, for instance. Very few people live in homes that are large enough to accommodate a seven-foot buffer without reconfiguring their entire living space. Urban dwellers across the U.S. and Europe face similar issues."
If they have enough room for a Wii, then they have enough for Move. Simple.
Also, while mentioning the current offerings are limited to some pretty casual stuff, why no mention of the myriad of titles launching next year and which seems to be offering more core gamer experiences?
To Hell with Move & Kinect!!
Long live the Control Pad!!! With Dual Analogs! and Tactical Feedback!!
Looking forward to playing Kinect with family at my Christmas party tonight.
But me personally, I'm waiting for a good game for Kinect.
