Mass Effect 2 Comparisons: The IGN Factor

GameBlurb writes, "The demo of Mass Effect 2 was released for the PlayStation 3 on Tuesday, December 21st and spawned a plethora of screenshot and video comparisons from the gaming community. GameBlurb was the first to release our Versus feature and was soon followed by Face-Offs, Head2Heads and other independent comparisons. But no matter the source of the comparison, there was a common consensus and three letters that were consistently brought up in the debate…”It doesn’t look like IGN”. We beg to differ…"

I agree, the entire comparison was blown out of proportion yesterday. The game looks great on both platforms.

darkecho5539d ago

I agree, the game looks great either way.

HolyOrangeCows5539d ago

Either way, the PS3 version looks as good as the 360 version in most ways and has a more stable framerate (But with some screen tearing).
And many would argue that Mass Effect 2 has the best graphics on the 360.

And we haven't even compared the retail version yet.
Just the demo.

Blacktric5539d ago

Also, the Xbox 360 and PC demos were released a couple of months (6 months I think) later of the game's release. So they're probably using the final code while PS3 demo's been released before the PS3 version's launch. We might see a couple more improvements. Anyway, in my opinion, they look pretty much the same and that's a great thing. Finished it on both PC and 360, gonna do the same for PS3 version.

STREET x KING5538d ago

@blacktric It was released on January 2010.
I have both mass effects on my 360 but i'm thinking of getting the third on the ps3 so i don't have to swap disks, but i haven't decided yet. I'd like to finish the trilogy on a single console.
And these comparisons are lame, both versions look great!

Look at the date please. 14th of June 2010. About 6 months later of the game's release. You probably checked the demo page from Steam like I did and saw the release date as January 29th. But it isn't.

yeah, the only way i would be pissed off is if the ps3 got a fucken shitty port, but i downloaded the demo and the game is just amazing, ive already beaten it on the PC (maxed out graphics) and i gotta say, the PS3 version is definitely not bad.

ct035539d ago

The games look a bit different which is mainly due to some lighting changes. But neither looks really better than the other.

RedDead5539d ago

I dunno texture wise they seem about equal, the use of lighting is better on the 360 though. I dunno why they changed it. The 360 version looks better but not in terms of quality, if you get my meaning

DigitalAnalog5538d ago (Edited 5538d ago )

If you're going to compete with DS2 (excellent porting) and LBP2 (excellent usage of the PS3). You do NOT want your game to be the "shoddy"port that will be ignored if you want to steal sales from both games.

-End of Line

i would have thought since the game isnt an open world sand box game it would gotten rid of the jaggies and been more smoother when looking around,i know they could have done it better, ill buy once its half price and save buying and paying for the full priced exclusives that use the ps3 properly

Jdoki5539d ago (Edited 5539d ago )

What annoys me about all these comparisons is that we're supposed to be GAMERS. And yet the things people are nit-picking over is graphics.

Sure graphics can help the immersion in a game - but for me Mass Effect was always

1. The Story
2. The game play
3. The graphics / sound

Mass Effect actually has a decent sci-fi story running through it (not amazing, but decent enough compared to most video games). The game play is fun - playing ME1 is a significantly different experience to ME2 - I'm interested to see where ME3 goes.

The graphics in ME 1 and 2 were never mind blowing - they were simply good and functional. Not up there with the best PS3 exclusives, or PC games by any means. The art direction is OK although a little sterile, and the character models are fairly detailed, but a bit stiff during conversations. So why people are getting so hung up on the graphics in a slightly undated unreal Engine game I really can't understand.

This game is fun, and people should be happy that so many gamers get to play it.

@ Jdoki
Spoken like a real gamer! Now if only more can adopt this mindset.

Raoh5539d ago

jdoki, its not that most people wont agree with you, its just that ps3 gamers have been given the shaft so many times. that now that a premier 360 game is coming to ps3, expect it to be dissected.

we've been told for a while by many 360 fans that its better than anything on the ps3.. well those words were from 360 gamers who held an exclusive. how will the ps3 community feel about the game.. mediocre? great? goty?

Spenok5538d ago

Man ive been saying shit like this for years to gamers and still people always ask me when they buy games "How are the graphics/Are the graphics good?"

My responce is always "Graphics dont make games fun man. Yea they help with immersion and make the game better overall, but it is NOT the most important feature."

Oh well, at least there are others that feel the same and im not alone.

anast439d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine439d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast439d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman439d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast438d ago

SimpleSlave687d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan687d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave686d ago (Edited 686d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
