2010: A Relatively Poor Year in Gaming?

"Recently, I got in a conversation with the guys on the Plan B podcast about great years in gaming. 1998 was mentioned, with great games like Ocarina of Time, Starcraft, the original Metal Gear Solid, the first generation of Pokémon games and finally Half-Life, to name a few."- PureDrakness

2010 was a really good year. We had Mass Effect 2, star craft 2, god of war 3, gran turismo 5, and halo reach.

maxcavsm5642d ago

I agree; thought it was a pretty solid year, but everyone has their opinion!

-Alpha5642d ago (Edited 5642d ago )

Well it was a good year but the most hyped games failed to meet expectations for a lot of people. All platforms had their biggest releases though: Starcraft, SMG, GT, and Halo.

I liked last year better and think 2011 will be as good as '98

schlanz5642d ago

2010 sure made me poor...

Megaton5642d ago

I think a ton of games underdelivered this year. Half of the stuff I was looking forward to for 2010 turned out to be pretty mediocre. Even a lot of the good stuff could have been better.

swishman5641d ago

a pretty underwhelming year. next year will be reallly big tho

Son_Lee5642d ago

This year was touted as a great year, but every game I played disappointed me to some point except Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII. That's just my opinion, though.

Son_Lee5642d ago

Yes, except FFXIII. My game of the year. I loved the hell out of that game. Sue me.

schlanz5641d ago

I just might have to.

Maybe I'll give it another try. I played it for a couple hours and lost interest.

Ryo-Hazuki5642d ago

Vanquish and FF13 were my top games this yr

assmonkey5642d ago

WTF. There were a lot of good games this year. not sure what this site is talking about.

PureDarkness5641d ago

Well, as I said in the article, yes we had a lot of GOOD games, but very few great ones. And VERY few new and innovative ones. The only innovation that came to mind was Heavy Rain but I don't think that's the kind of innovation we want.

Was aware the iconic Starcaft IP was jumping to South Korea ....

jznrpg431d ago

Weird MS is letting go of a good IP. I don’t mind it but hopefully the best dev wins and I’m not sure who that is outbid those.

Sonyslave3431d ago (Edited 431d ago )

What they are bidding for are exclusive rights to develop the IP. Microsoft/blizzard is essentially licensing it out to the highest bidder, not selling the IP.

I wonder if we'll see Starcraft Ghost come out of this. And if we do, I wonder if it'll be a free-to-play gacha game.

goken430d ago (Edited 430d ago )

Given the potential developers, looks inevitable there will be free to play gacha versions. But given south korea’s love for starcraft there would be one that is inline with starcraft 1&2.
Might want to expect some sort of backdoor cheat that only south koreans know of lol 🤣

Profchaos430d ago

Nah that's long since dead and gone it's only good is a leaked Dev build

Bro missing companions: Legion, Grunt, Samara/Morinth, Javik, EDI

anast542d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine542d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast542d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman542d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast541d ago

Liam lol I can't stand that dude.

SimpleSlave790d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan790d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave789d ago (Edited 789d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
