Multi-Player Games Lack Innovation

NextGN writes: "Multi-player games, in this day an age, are mostly the same old repetitive crap – first and third person shooters with generic game-play modes, like team death match and capture the flag. Although they provide cheap thrills, innovation is completely lacking. The latest game to actual have an original multi-player mode is Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood – and in my opinion, it is probably one of the best multi-player games available on console today. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’s multi-player kind of reminded me of a game that kept me busy when I was a youngster – Spy vs. Spy, and I am talking about the classic Nintendo Entertain System version."

Demon's Souls, also another extremely unique multi-player mode, if you can call it that. Still great.

Kitchen_Sink5620d ago

Call of Duty is the same crap repackaged and resold every single year. Can't believe people fall for that shite. I mean, seriously, their is minimal effort actually put into the development of the game so that activision profits huge on the sale. They have milked the same engine for three years now.... been releasing super expensive expansion packs as "full games".... we are suckers.

... I know all of this, yet I still have the entire CoD collection. Why? Because I enjoy it. Not saying you are wrong - but CoD genuinely has an interesting single player campaign. Black Ops sucks balls online, though.

sinclaircrown5620d ago

I agree. You're both right IMO.

Same old stuff, yet I do enjoy it each time. I'm not as picky as most gamers. Although I'd say all 1st person shooters are starting to feel the same to me.

Same games, different cast and weapons. Found a new love for 3rd person when I played Splinter Cell Conviction for the first time 3 weeks ago. I've played it through several times already and haven't gotten bored.

I almost forgot what it was like to do more than just shoot the gun you see in front of you the whole time.

sinclaircrown5620d ago

Actually, Uncharted brought back my love for 3rd person.

FiLTHY ESKiMO5620d ago

@sinclaircrown

I love Uncharted 2's multi-player, don't get me wrong - but it's still quite generic. The most innovative thing about the multi-player is the machinima mode.

Still, I didn't get it for the multi-player mode. Unhcarted 2: Among Thieves has one of the best single-player campaigns of all time. :)

FudgeBear5620d ago

Uncharted 2's multiplayer, tho alright, doesn't come anywhere close to AC:B's... that stuff is inteeense!

Accidentally_Nuked5620d ago

Demon's Souls from what I heard is frustratingly, punch your sister in the face, hard. :S

DarkSharky5620d ago

Demon's Souls is a lame hack and slash game posing as a RPG. The multi-player mode is quite stupid, too.

"Even Red Dead Redemption, though the free-roaming mode was pretty cool the action game-play modes were nothing more than orthodox – Gang Shootout, the standard team death match mode, Grab Bag and Hold Your Own, which are different variations of your basic capture the flag mode."

I thought RDR had an innovative multi-player. I am an addict!

Accidentally_Nuked5620d ago

Me too! I love that game. It was my GOTY! :D

FudgeBear5620d ago

Fun game, but the article has it right, it's generic. Nothing new.

DarkSharky5620d ago

I am content with the way most multi-player games are now. I would rather get a quality generic first person shooter rather than a failed attempt at some crappy artsy game.

So screw innovation... stick to what sells.

dkgshiz5620d ago

You want more buggy COD games?

dkgshiz5620d ago (Edited 5620d ago )

Put me to sleep to be honest. The SP is where it was at. Amazing SP. I thought the MP addition was a waste of development time. Plus the servers for that thing are awful. They may be fixed now.

Ape Escape.
Fun game but, wow, you need a college degree to understand the controls.
A remaster would also save you from having to constantly fight the camera.
Keep the music though. Those drum and bass tracks fit really well and haven't aged. Made me think that more games could work well with drum and bass tracks, but unfortunately it's a somewhat niche genre now.
