Another five years for Xbox 360?

UK boss Neil Thompson looks to software reinvention for established console

“Who knows,” Xbox's UK and Ireland general manager Neil Thompson replied to MCV when we asked if the Xbox 360 can survive another five years on the market.

fungmi5630d ago

I'm kinda thinking after 5 years we deserve a new Xbox, what if Sony announce the PS4 2011?

Mystogan5630d ago

I doubt that sony is willing to make the jump yet only one that REALLY needs make the jump is Nintendo.

and besides i think its a good thing that MS will not come with a Xbox 720 yet. if you can do Amazing things with the PS3's power in 2011 with games like uncharted 3 and Killzone 3...Imagine the Xbox 720's power in 2013 or 2015.

So i couldn't care less if sony announces a TERATASTIC PS4 earlier..because 1 or 2 years later MS will come with a ZETTATASTIC 720.

see what i did there? ZETTA is Bigger then TERRA

Btw im just joking i don't believe neither of them will come up with a new consoles until at least 2013

fungmi5630d ago

Well I guess Nintendo makes sense, but I'd love a new Xbox ... I mean I've seen anything as good as Uncharted 2 on 360 ... not even Gears 2 is as good.

Perjoss5630d ago

"with us soon? Not likely"

That's exactly what I would say if i was trying to get the jump on Sony and another 1 year head start on the next Playstation.

MS has done some cool stuff this gen like Live and achievements, but I think the main thing that has kept them so firmly in the game is the 1 year lead.

This gen has been perfect, 2 huge companies competing so closely, if either had got a clear lead the leader would stop trying so hard to win us over. Neck and neck = both parties trying really hard to sell conesoles and games.

TurismoGTR5630d ago

If the 360 fails to impressive in 2011, 2012, and 2013.. there's a huge chance of Microsoft ditching the game market.

fungmi5630d ago

No way will Microsoft ditch the game market this is never gonna happen

shikamaroooo5630d ago

@fungmi

you do no MS investors wanted to break up MS Meaning less Money For R&D etc.. late november Soure: http://www.theaustralian.co...

and plus doesnt the gaming divin make up like 4% of MS's Profit?

Mystogan5630d ago (Edited 5630d ago )

Never gonna happen...now that they have a solid place.

Even if all hell breaks lose in example people trowing away 360/Burning them on a pile of kinect's.

That would be a good moment to announce the Xbox 720.

@shikamarooooo

Share holders are a pain in the Ass, you have to convince them to do something like the Xbox only then you can operate.
Believe me Shareholders are never Happy.

MS should go Private so they can do Everything they want and not depend on shareholders.

And GOOD thing Steve Balmer dismissed the Idea right away.

BTW 4% of 18.7 billion is a lot.
if shareholders would lose that 4% all hell would break lose.

shikamaroooo5630d ago

@Mystogan What i was implying was less money for R&D for Xbox 720 not MS will Close Xbox because investors would want more money going into windows

stiggs5630d ago

"There's a huge chance of Microsoft ditching the game market."

What are you basing this ridiculous statement on...your hopes and dreams?

Biggest5630d ago

I like how you ignored the link provided to answer your question. Microsoft's lead investors want the gaming division shut down.

cjflora5630d ago

I love it when tards try talking about this stuff. It's clear half of you know nothing about shareholders and their influence on a company. Shareholders are never happy? All they care about is the most profit possible. If this means dropping a project that isn't making as much as they would like it'll happen unless they can be convinced otherwise.

Who need 720 when they got Kineck hahahaah

oldjadedgamer5630d ago

You say that like it's a joke, but in reality, the success of kinect means there is no reason for MS to put out a new console in the near future (if ever).

3rd party games in 2011 look excellent. I don't think people realize it on here, but MS doesn't need a ton of exclusives to keep selling. Batman and ESV are coming out and will sell 360s and software.

Kinect will keep selling (even if we dont want it to). It doesn't matter even if Sony overtakes MS worldwide, MS did what they wanted.

showtimefolks5630d ago

and yet all gaming sites still call this next gen and we are 4-5 years into it.

a new wii in fall 2011 if nintendo is smart because i don't think they can compete with MS or sony every 3rd party wii exckusive taht is decent will be on ps3 with dual shock3/moce controls.(ps3 will become wii-hd if nintenod is late)

but knowing nintendo we won't see a wii-hd till late 2012 since we already have 3ds launching next year.

MS will once again come out with a new console before ps4 i believe that MS is already hard at work on the next console ot trying to gather tehir facts on what the next console should be.(if no bluray atleast put in hd-dvd because its more disk space than a regular dvd)

we will see a ps4 in 2015 because ps3 is only 4 years old right now so atleast 5 more year could be 6 so look for a new ps console in 2015-2016(i think sony would like to come to the market first but they believe in their 10 year plan and will be supporting ps3 long after MS will stop with xbox360)

but either way think about it

1TB of memory or cloud
bluray-hd-dvd or whatever is next
dx11 or maybe for that time whatever is new
etc,,,,

It's still a division in MS that's doing very well! Why would they hurt it? Same way Sony would not hurt the Playstation division because their electronics group may not be doing well ...

C0MPUT3R5630d ago

It's not doing well, MS is funneling money from their OS & Office profits into their E & D division.
.
That is why Gates & Balmer don't want to break up the company like Merrill Lynch and their Share Holders have suggested. Because if they did the E&D division would have to swim on it's own, and it would probably sink to the bottom.
.
Bottom line the E & D division cuts into investors profits, thus why the stock has been flat for 10 years. (The same time the E & D division was started.)

gypsygib5630d ago

Entertainment Division would have done well if RROD didn't cost MS 3 billion and if the original Xbox consoles could have not been produced at a loss all the time...and Zune.

Xbox brand is doing really well now, it just had a horrible and incredibly expensive start due to easily avoidable decisions, that it's still trying to recoup from financially.

They learned to control the manufacturing process and I think now they know not to release faulty hardware.

Kran5630d ago

Technically though, why are people expecting a new console from Microsoft? It of course wont happen for years yet.

People expect a new console for Microsoft not hardly ever do they expect a PS4 from Sony?

I mean Kinect and Move just came out. Do you really think they're going to release those, and then go: Right. Abandon the 360 and PS3. Time to make the 720/PS4.

Well.... if you can use Kinect and Move on them, then yes. Otherwise, not straight away they wont.

tdogchristy905630d ago

Ive said this many times. I'm very content and really enjoying this generation, both from sony and from MS. Just look at what 2011 has in store. So I would love to be able to enjoy this generation for a few more years without feeling pressured to jump to something new. I am definitely loving this generation.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio16d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing16d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit16d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing16d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay17d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn218d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn217d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown18d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay17d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay17d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac17d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger18d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300018d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde18d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde17d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_17d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
