Why Episodic Gaming Isn't Working

The Weekend Gamer looks at the current state of episodic gaming, from Half Life 2 to SiN: Episodes, Sam & Max to the upcoming Penny Arcade Adventures and points out that there are several factors that are holding these games back. What's wrong with episodic gaming, and why isn't it going as planned?

I havent read the article but im guessing it simple...every 2 years is hardly episodic. (Half life).

Episodic should be every month in my mind and be very short. Much like a tv show. Not TOO short but short and pay for the whole series. rrp £20 for example..like a dvd.

What's the point of posting your comment if you didn't read the article?

I mean none of those games on the list interests me at all. As far as Half-Life goes I believe they take a little too long for a "episodic" game to come out. If they would make new interesting games then I think it would work out more. I mean I would buy a Parasite Eve 3 in episodes.

gamerriffic6807d ago

worked, because it was popular...
all those other games listed...
the average gamer.. even the hardcore gamer..
would probably not even hear about it.
theres no real hype surrounding those games.

.. and i remember when Sin came out, it got crap reviews.
episodic content isnt bad, its the games that are..
...afterall.. microsoft did pay 50 million for gta 4's episodic content.

Sam and Max is the only game that is TRULY made in episodes. It's HOW episodic gaming should be done. Every month a new episode comes out. Brilliant.

Anyone who doesn't appreciate a game like Sam and Max shouldn't be calling themselves a gamer.

WafflesID6807d ago

Seriously, this article has a major flaw. It completely ignores the ONLY game that is TRULY episodic. If episodic gaming follows the lead of Sam and Max then it CAN be a success. But if you follow the Half-Life 2 "episodic" model then it will fail.

Bah. N4G is getting riddled with all these blogs from people who just dont have a clue.

Infamous Video Game Endings That Left a Bad Taste

The most disappointing and infamous video game endings even sour the overall thoughts of a game. Most of these titles represent some of the finest entries in their respective series, marred by an ending we can't quite forgive.

Far Cry 5....bullshit. This game had a great ending imo.

There is no game called Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2, but Rebirth had a great ending imo. Felt robbed by the ending at first, but the more I've seen it and during my 3rd playthrough, I started to understand and realize a lot more that make me appreciate the ending.

Nerdmaster756d ago (Edited 756d ago )

I was enjoying FFVII Remake, even though those whispers throughout the game were annoying. But the ending was so bad that I don't even want to play Rebirth. On top of that, from what I saw on reviews, the ending of Rebirth is even worse.

Also, I'm glad to see Zero Time Dilemma being recognized as the trainwreck it is. After the amazing two first games (especially the near perfect second one), the low quality of the trilogy end is baffling. The new characters are bad, the old characters don't feel like themselves, a surprise "alien technology" pops out of nowhere, the big twist was like "eh?", and it doesn't really finish the story nor explains the loose threads from the second game.

Top 10 Rabbits In Gaming

From Xfire: "Bunnies are often depicted in media and popular culture as small, fluffy, adorable little buck-toothed bundles of cuteness, so far as deifying a rabbit and incorporating it into Easter traditions, somehow associating the mammal with colourful eggs and the consumption of unhealthy quantities of chocolate effigies made in its image. However, not all lagomorphs are love and cuddles - as Australia would be happy to tell you - and in video games, more often than not rabbits will be psychopathic murderers.

Since the brief season in which the ritualistic worship of a paranormal rabbit is socially acceptable is upon us, let's take a look, in no particular order, at the best and baddest hares in video games who could send the Easter Bunny packing."

How is Fran from Final Fantasy XII missing? ;-) She is the most badass Rabbit ever been in a video game!

I would add a couple honorable mentions. Vibri from Vib Ribbon and Robbit from Jumping Flash.
