Xbox Live Platinum subscription incoming

It has been recently rumored that Microsoft wants to enter in the world of television by offering a virtual cable network in XBOX LIVE that would give subscribers access to all the basics like ABC, NBC, Fox and CBS, but the fun parts starts here, those that want to upgrade will be able to add the channels they want, like HBO or Showtime. Customers setting up a significant amount of extra channels will be able to select from premade packages, just as with normal cable providers. All this talk makes you believe that Microsoft will charge you more for this function, therefor a new suscription, XBOX LIVE PLATINUM.

Gee, Microsoft, I have Direct TV for television. All I really want from you is GAMES. It is bad enough that you hold the multiplayer portion of games that I have already paid for hostage, now you want to try and sell me tv as well? I can see it now, "TV... best on Xbox 360."

Ah hell, who am I kidding? People will line up like a flock of sheep with wallets in hand ready to dish out even more $ to Microsoft for tv channels that they can get through their local Satellite or Cable TV provider. Hopefully this remains a rumor and nothing more, but let's just say that I will not be surprised if it is not.

SMOK3xFFx5650d ago

Calm down, you don't need to buy it, are they forcing you to get rid of your Direct TV? It's just an option and more options are always good.

ironcreed5650d ago

No shit they are not forcing me to. I am just offering my take on the matter. We are here for discussion, no?

SMOK3xFFx5650d ago (Edited 5650d ago )

Your "take" doesn't make sense, your crying about being given another option watch T.V, who knows maybe Microsoft T.V offers better prices for some and for those it doesn't, they can just stay with what they have.

Also who said we are not here for discussion, this is what this is isn't it?

deadreckoning6665650d ago (Edited 5650d ago )

@ironcreed- You spazin' out bra. Read the article. Its an OPTION...no different from PS Plus. How could that make you angry?

evrfighter5650d ago (Edited 5650d ago )

screw you M$ for offering another option that might make the big cable players sweeten their deals.

I like having no competition and paying premium for everything.

M$ is evil.

5650d ago
kneelb4zod5650d ago

Wile it's an option you still have to pay for the service just to use another.

darthv725650d ago

I am not sure how well this would go over with the internet providers. Wasn't it just recently that Comcast wanted to charge an extra fee to the the streaming services for using up so much bandwidth?

So cable companies could potentially increase internet costs to cover the loss of cable tv subscribers. Same with DSL and Fiber providers. That part is speculation. Paranoia if you will.

Right now I like the ESPN 3 and have been a diehard netflix user since it came out. I use it on all 3 (4 if you count PC) consoles this gen. If MS wants to work out some "on demand" type of programming for live then it could be cool. JUST NO COMMERCIALS!

DarkTower8055650d ago

I think Ironcreed is just saying MS should concentrate more on producing core games, rather than all this casual stuff they've been doing.

Yes, the more options the better. But how about having those more options be new IPs or new 1st party studios instead of something we can all get from our cable providers?

DMason5650d ago

I think that this would be a great alternative for paying high premiums for cable. I only watch a handful of channels, but I pay for over 500 of them. If I can pay less for a certain package, I'm down with that.

FX, HBO, Showtime, ABC, NBC, Fox, Spike, A&E, History, and CBS are really the only channels I watch. If I could pay, say $30 for example, I would be very happy.

Kurt Russell5650d ago

I hope this happens for the UK. I don't have TV currently other than BBC iplayer on my PS3. I would use a service like this a lot.

IaMs125649d ago

Personally this doesnt make sense for those who already have the channels tho does it? Now if you do not have these channels by all means its great for that person, but what happens if your internet drops? You cant play Xbox Live or watch TV while your waiting for it to come back up because its connected to LIVE haha.

But giving more people options is nice, im not bashing them for that what i am bashing is give us some more damn game options instead of features. Put those features and the effort into making the games not damn TV

poopface15649d ago

I found a site that lets you watch those channels and any sports for free and live. YOu can watch all nfl games, NBA, NHL, NCAA Football. The quality is low but its great to watch all and any sports event live for free.

I get those basic channels in hd for free with regular cable.

Ohh after 2014 the NFL sunday ticket deal runs out, and I doubt DTV will have exclusive rights. Then they are going under.

@Smok3 i think his point was that he bought his console for games, not to be offered something that he and most likely all the people that play 360 & use live already have(a digital tv service)

so why not give the 360 fans games(being that there's a complete lack of exclusives, hardcore games anyway) instead of services that are just going to offer something that the majority of users already have at a probably over priced option..

tbh i agree with him, i'd much rather some new game announcements or something than services that yes fair enough are optional but at the moment pretty uneccessary..

although he is a very angry fellow lol

ksense5650d ago

^This man makes sense. some people find it hard to find the real meaning of what one is saying

Jack Meahoffer5650d ago

xAlmostPro so you and ironcreed are against the media options Sony offers on the PS3 as well right? Should just focus on the games right?

TheBlackSmoke5650d ago

Facepalm...Have you seen 2011 lineup?

Sony have us covered a million times over. The point is MS are doing this with nothing on the horizon for actual games.

Tainted Gene5650d ago

@ Jack M.

seems like it,

"Xbox, Don't focus on Everything"

Me personally I DON'T have cable, direct or watever, just basic over the air digital stations (7 in all) so I am kinda interested in this,

will be keeping tabs on this....

Jack Meahoffer5650d ago

@ TheBlackSmoke

"Facepalm...Have you seen 2011 lineup?"

Funny 2011 hasn't happened yet. If at end of 2011 the 360 release line up sucks you can make that point but until then you fail.

Philoctetes5650d ago

This is actually a service that Microsoft would be completely justified in charging a separate fee for. If XBL Platinum (or whatever) can substitute for cable or Directv, you ought to be willing to at least something to get it.

Cheeseknight285650d ago

Exactly. How can people honestly expect Microsoft to just give away cable TV for just $60 a year? Ridiculous.

I still disagree with the $10 increase, since apparently it all went to Activision, but adding channels and charging for them is entirely reasonable. The bandwidth alone would require the premium fee.

stiggs5650d ago (Edited 5650d ago )

Waaahh...Microsoft charges me for things. Waaaah...Microsoft is mean and greedy.

Will you listen to yourself? Complaining just to be heard...You must be a JOY to be around.

edhe5650d ago

r1sh125650d ago

It looks like its gonna be for the USA for the time being.
Maybe Canada too, but its a good move for MS.
Im sure eventually Sony and Google will join on the ps3, maybe this is 1 way to pose a significant challenge.
I like the routes that both MS and Sony are taking, where 1 piece of equipment is the entire entertainment hub in a persons home.
Imagine the possibilities in the coming years, all forms of media via the two great games consoles.
Since MS are moving quickly it looks like this could be a big issue for google, which will force Google TV to move from just TV platforms to the PS3.
I love this competition heating up, it only means better things for people with the consoles. I have best of both worlds so twice the goodness for me.

duplissi5650d ago

well... there already are rumors of googletv coming to the ps3, especially considering google and sony are so in love with each other.

feelintheflow5650d ago

As someone who lives in an area where I can't get my local channels through directv or my locals in hd through dish, I am stuck with my cable company that has crap for channels. No nba network, no option for nba league pass, about 20 hd channels total. I am all for an option like this. Options are always good. Don't be such a fanboy ironcreed. If it were Sony I am sure you would be jockin it real hard. I hope sony does offer this option in the future, as I love my ps3 just as much as my 360.

poopface15649d ago

We used to have DTV but it would go out alot for half of the year in teh rainy season.

I recently found website where you can watch any NFL, NBA, NCAA football game LIVE. Its lower quality but free and live. let me know if you want to try it.

I just started using it but it is great to watch the games that are not on tv, witch is almost all of them.

vickers5005650d ago

I don't want Xbox Live Platinum damnit, give me Xbox Live Copper so I can just play the damn games I pay for online .

R2D25650d ago

Its Bronze and not Copper.

vickers5005650d ago

Well no sh*t, I was just making a joke. I was saying that they should make a lesser service that simply offers the ability to play online for free and call it copper.

edhe5650d ago

So you want the premium service for free?

k.

vickers5005650d ago (Edited 5650d ago )

No, I want the ability to play online for free, because it SHOULD be free. I'm already forking over 65 bucks for the game, why should I have to pay yet another fee to play the other half of the game when I already paid full price for the whole thing?

edhe5649d ago

You pay per game do you?

I think you have it backwards - you pay your service fee then pay extra for the games to use the service ;)

vickers5005649d ago (Edited 5649d ago )

Uh no, I don't. Playing online should be free. If I pay 65 dollars for a game (which includes online) then why shouldn't I be able to play that game online without paying some bs 50$ a year fee? I shouldn't have to pay another 50 or 60 a year to play a portion of a game I already bought

What is it about that concept that you cannot seem to grasp?

edhe5646d ago

Please tell me why using the services of a company should be free?

Honestly. You use bandwidth, electricity and you have to pay for people to engineer the servers as well as the people to maintain them.

What about that is free?

You must be young to come from the Generation of Entitlement.

Jack Meahoffer5650d ago

Bit rabid for just sharing a discussion point... No?

A lot of people including myself hate their cable or satellete provider to the point their ditching them entirely and going with things like Netflix and Hulu.

Rumors of MS getting into this business somehow is an attack on you and games??? Somehow I venture to guess you'd hate it no matter what MS did because it doesn't come from the brand name you worship.

Coogi5650d ago

First poster is SOOO sad I mean wow, you have GOT to still live with your parents and not paying for shit or you would know it cost A LOT for Direct Tv EVERY month some people pay over 100 a month...more like a lot actually.

This would be great for people who don't have cable or anything but just use Netflix, if it's not REALLY high this would be amazing.

And your intake is fucking garbage you clearly say " people" which does not refer to yourself, GTFO.

Mizz_mai5650d ago

...ummmm how about gd idea

Vherostar5650d ago

Hmm more proof of the direction MS are headed?? I dunno if this is true or not it's too hard to tell but they could only launch this service in the US and not worldwide. This is where the problems would lie and is why I can't see it happening.

jneul5650d ago (Edited 5650d ago )

lool ms wants to charge you for even more services looks like that price adjustment was not enough for ms

punkpop1015650d ago

Gawdl3y5650d ago

@SMOK3xFFx
Microsoft having better prices for TV?
Let's be realistic, now.

UnbiasedTroll5650d ago

MS Xbox Live scam. Where PSN is all free. If they do this atleast make online free for silver members.

mrcash5649d ago

This may benefit many people, there's some people who have cable for just a few channels and have to pay full price, if you get to pick and choose and save yourself some money, then its not too bad.

I already have fios service and honestly don't like the delay of streaming live tv online, so i wont be dishing out any money for this.

ironcreed5650d ago

Yes, go ahead and disagree. Because giving Microsoft more money monthly is a good thing, right? Hey, maybe next they will come out with an add-on that can make pancakes for you and scratch your balls at the same time. Just $150.00 at launch and $60.00 more a year just to use it. I bet some of you would even pay for that.

qface645650d ago

no where did it ever say you would have to be forced to pay for this if it existed

if they did come out with this i fail to see how it would affect you at all
if you don't want it you ignore it and go about your business it wouldn't really change what you already have

mrcash5649d ago

exactly, its like their zune pass, or movie rental if you don't like it you dont pay and its over with. There's nothing wrong with have more options.

Nineball21125650d ago

"maybe next they will come out with an add-on that can make pancakes for you and scratch your balls at the same time."

Dammit, now you've got me interested...

dtalon35650d ago

thats what I was thinking...poor example IMO lol

Jrome5649d ago

I think it was meant to be a poor example...

ironcreed5650d ago

@Smokee33x

LOL, I am hardly crying. I simply think charging for tv on a game console is quite stupid. I guess from a certain veiwpoint, 'more options' are always good, regardless if said options are really needed or not. Still, I will give it to you that it is not forced. I am just not a fan of monthly subscription fees for all of these additional services that have absolutely nothing to do with gaming. Maybe that is just because I bought an Xbox 360 to play games on, and nothing more.

Have you taken a gander at the upcoming exclusive line-up for the 360 lately? I think the word weak is an understatement. All of this focus on Kinect and it's casual market games, making Live more expensive and now rumors of a subscription tv service... it all just sucks to me. Forgive me if I want more of their attention to be on the core gaming market instead of Kinect and all of these additional "options."

Whatever, I have said my piece on this. My central point is that I want more games, not more subscription services and Kinect games. If these "options" are what floats your boat, then good for you. To each their own.

DixieNormS5650d ago

Why is it stupid? I mean, would you rather have one box in your t.v. stand supplying you with, gaming and premium channels, or two boxes that do the things I mentioned individually?

topekomsi5650d ago

Hey bro, i understand what you are saying, M$ has shifted focus, away from the HC gamers that have made the 360 so successful. You, my friend, may need to invest in the ps3. Our exclusive lineup is fuggin sweet....

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio23d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing23d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9223d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit23d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing23d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay24d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn225d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn224d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown25d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay24d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay24d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac24d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger25d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300025d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde25d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde24d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_24d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
