Move vs Kinect: The War That Never Was

Dealspwn takes a controversial look at why the "motion control war" simply doesn't exist... and why many companies want to convince you that it does.

Jon Lester writes: "There is no Motion Control War. Move and Kinect represent one of the rare areas in which Microsoft and Sony are not in direct competition with each other… and it’s both misleading and highly inflammatory to compare them on any level."

"Kinect’s primary audience are Xbox 360 owners"

Then the war is already over.
Dont kid yourself its a war for your money. The real fight is spreading like wild fire in the gaming biz. With Mario leading the charge. Apples closing in on the handheld market and new players are jumping in. While sony is betting on the psp phone to get back in.
Fact is both move and kinect are targeted at the wii crowd. But I do agree neither are expanding much past their base tho the move has more promise and is drawing a bit more of the wii crowd. Especially those looking for the hd upgrade.

edit yeh like he said "Rivalry sells- even if it doesn’t really exist."
I agree but Id go further to say these big mega corps collaborate on forming these rivalries and once again reiterate that the real war is for our cash.

You're absolutely right. The Wii is sitting directly as the real competition for both peripherals. The article is arguing that- far from being "over"- the war never actually existed in the first place.

your absolutely wrong. Thr handheld market will be dominated by the 3ds

and the psphone has nothing to do with gaming. Sny will be battling nintendo with the psp 2

the psphone will have games just priced at 10 dollars with gaming specs based off the psp which is confirmed

the psp 2 has a track on the back, dual analog, and actual games

"The Wii is sitting directly as the real competition for both peripherals."

WROOOONG. If I already have a PS3, why the hell would I pay $180 for a Wii, when I can get the Move bundle that only cost 100 bux, is the more accurate controller, has upcoming games that actually appeal to me, has better looking games, works in HD, and works with some of my existing PS3 library?

There is NO war. People who only have PS3s will get Move and people who only have 360s will get Kinect, assuming they are interested in motion controls. And people who have both a 360 and PS3 will likely get both Move and Kinect, assuming their interested in motion controls, since people who have both consoles tend to be rich bastards lol.

"If I already have a PS3, why the hell would I pay $180 for a Wii, when I can get the Move bundle that only cost 100 bux"

Erm... this is actually the point. You already have a PS3. So you'll buy a Move. It's a no-brainer, because the Move is primarily targeted at YOU.

New consumers, on the other hand, will find themselves slap bang in the middle between the 360 and PS3... with the Wii providing the perfect middle ground and the only real consumer overlap.

EDIT: Your second paragraph is absolutely spot on. Agreed.

Very well written and true article. Too bad most of the users of this site wont be able to see it like this.

Yeah, no Kumbayah-singing our future. Luckily, I'm usually just amused by it. Some people it really ticks off.

DeathGazer5653d ago

When I have trouble sleeping, I think of the war between Kinect and Move. Usually knocks me right out.

bananlol5653d ago

I find it ironic people use the term war to describe a competion in the video game industry. Video games are meant to be fun, war is not fun.

Blues Cowboy5653d ago

Not a bad point, that. 'War' is a nice evocative word that makes diehard fans feel like they're fighting for their cause rather than just consuming.

femshep5652d ago

there was no motion control war.....just like the Console war ended when the system were launched and now its all about personal preference?

Yet another powerful device Sony gave up supporting. KZ3 move was one of the best motion controller implementation ever

just_looken579d ago

Right the ps move was awesome i have the gun thing from killzone still.

Relientk77580d ago

That's really cool. It's crazy something like that is possible with gaming controllers 1000's of miles away.

Lexreborn2580d ago

Guess that submarine should’ve used move controllers instead of logitech
