PC Gaming; Is There Still A Future?

PC gaming has in recent time showed that it may not have the impulse to compete with console gaming, though they are home to the best graphics and some exclusive titles like Crysis. Over the last couple of years, a lot of events have occurred that can make one draw to a conclusion that PC gaming may become non-existence in the very near future.

Firstly, sales are no longer enough to encourage developers and publishers to make more games on the PC

Microsoft, a big part of console gaming, even knows that PC gaming has a bright future, which is why they just re-launched Games for Windows and are working on AoE.

Trizard5711d ago

What? News of AoE (besides AoE online), please, I'm begging you to give me the source so I can fap to it later tonight.

Seeing how all games are made using computers, you would think that PC gaming would be where it's at! But the fact of the matter is, there is more money to be made in console gaming. Which is why priority usually shifts away from PC's.

Most of the people I know who play games on PC usually only play a couple of games. I even have a buddy who still plays Everquest!

Most PC gamers are of a different breed. They spend the time and money building their rig up and develop an ego worse than any console fanboy could ever wish to have. Everything you say, they feel they have to defend their PC!

I remember I was talking to a lady before the Ps3 came out. And I was telling her how powerful it was going to be and such. But she kept going on and on about her PC and how great it was and how a videogame system could never be better than a PC!

Keep in mind that she had just purchased a Ps2 and figured the Ps3 would be just a little more powerful than that!

Anyway, PC gaming is still in a rough spot... primarily due to piracy! Seems the most popular games on PC are MMO's these days. And almost everything else just get's pirated!

@AAACE5

If money is to be made on consoles, then why are Microsoft and Sony still in losses?

Also most console devs arent doing very well in case you havent noticed. Have a look at some of their financials most of them arent doing too well.

The most profitable devs out there today are Blizzard and Valve. Infact Blizzard alone makes more money then Sony or microsoft division. Sony Only makes losses lets not even count them lol.

AOE Online is not AoE. Microsoft is only publishing the game. Sure they own the name Age of Empires and all Ensemble Properties, but Robot Entertainment should get full credit for developing AoE Online.

Microsoft is shifting to help the PC Games for Windows line. Why? Because its an embarrassment. Can it be fixed yes. Will it? Maybe one day.

Microsoft while owns Windows. It has no control over 95% of the PC games that are on the market today. I like it that way. Sure PC could use a few more solid titles, but now almost everything you could want is on the PC as well as consoles so its great for PC gamers. Just depends on which developers put the effort into making the PC version a PC version instead of a port that is just slid over to the PC.

Since PC gamers can buy their own servers. Lots of PC games live years beyond their expiration date the developer can claim exists. I still have PC games from 2003/2004 with full servers and fun games still living on. PC games live long lives.

If anything it's going to get better and bigger. With console life spans getting so long and the tech being less impressive(Sony first party exclusives aside), the PC is now a good home for developers to keep going forward tech wise.

Not only that but Steam just gets better and better. The deals they have are incredible, and with games like Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft it continues to draw players in.

I personally got a new gaming PC a few months ago, and have been loving the crap out of it. I can't wait for Witcher 2 next year, and Cataclysm in a few days. :)

trancefreak5711d ago

Im pretty much getting over the console thing and moving back to pc. I did this last gen especially how the pc really advanced during that time period.

Pc gaming just has more freedom IMO. Better prices on games, more customized games mods etc. I can go on - the console exclusives everything else I get off steam or a disc for pc now a days.

My 8800 gtx still works pretty good next year Ill build a new machine with a core i7 or better. I love my core 7 laptop but the 330m gpu is crap. Too bad the express card game cards never worked out with soem potential. Pretty much doa for lappys.

imvix5711d ago

PC gaming has alot more freedom. And imagine all the games you bought for console in the past years have no gaurantee of working on the next machine. Hence when the next gen starts, you have a good chance to lose your library. Another reason why they may not give BC is because they will want to sell remakes. Console gaming is like a business, and a business needs to make money. Specially since they are in losses already.

With PC you create a library it just keeps growing and with the sales on digital services these days its very easy to create a PC gaming library for very cheap.

Ducky5711d ago (Edited 5711d ago )

I noticed it earlier while skimming through the IGN nominations for PC, there are plenty of decent games that for PC this year:
Stalker, Amnesia, Civ5, StarcraftII, WoW:Cataclysm, Minecraft, along with the major multiplats.
... and then there's a plethora of mods for so many different engines.

That and with multiple digital distributors competing with each other, you get ridiculous savings.
PC-Gaming's future doesn't look bleak to me. =)

specialguest5711d ago

Battlefield 3 will be one if the biggest hit on pc.

trancefreak5711d ago

Oh yes that game gives me some fist pumpin.

PC gaming is alive even though we get articles every week saying other wise

Edit@below
i guess thats why steam has over 30 million active user right>

proudly_X5711d ago (Edited 5711d ago )

i beg to differ, recent happenings in the PC gaming world says otherwise,
Edit . .
This is not to say there isn't hope. PC gaming still has a bright future . . .

deltaforce825711d ago

Yes, recent happenings such as millions of steam users buying PC games every day. PC gaming is obviously FUBAR.

Lich1205711d ago

Not to mention that most times when I log in to play SC2 theres more people on it than Halo Reach.

pixelsword5711d ago (Edited 5711d ago )

Well, let's put it like this (and read it because it's a deception):

30 million gamers puts steam/PC in 4th place behind the PS3 or 360 depending on what you consider 4th place until December stats come out, so according to the general opinion of "sales", if Steam was considered a console, and the PS3 was called PS3rd and flopstation, then the PC is indeed in a "floppable" position right now.

The reason why what I just wrote is not exactly true is because no one counts the casual gamers who play when they should be working (like me :D) or the facebook gamers.

Actually, the PC is in the strongest potential position for gamers, just not to those who seek to oppress the indie game developers and the new/creative ways games can be played online (basically those who want to yoke PC gamers with subscriptions like Microsoft or Activision).

As long as there are gaming sites with free games the PC will always be my first choice for games. And if the PS3 charges monthly, the PS3 will be my last Console unless Nintendo remains free.

imvix5711d ago

@Pixelsword

You cant just count Steam alone as PC gaming and call it a day. Many people use other networks.

Also lets not forget Steam will only keep growing, Once this console gen ends, next consoles will start from 0. Steam will maintain its base and keep growing. Games bought will be sustained in the library. Console gamers will be flocking to buy new games on their machines because there is a high probablity old games just wont work.

Steam is amazing. We don't even need retailers for PC games, Steam has everything, at a lower price, and at the comfort of our homes.

jerocarson5711d ago

i think pc gaming has a future, the question should be, what is the future for console gaming?

thebudgetgamer5711d ago (Edited 5711d ago )

yea, not going anywhere either.

GrilledCheeseBook5711d ago (Edited 5711d ago )

Steam - 30 million active accounts

Constant sales that revitalize old games
Risen for example in its entire time being sold on Steam was outsold in the short time it was on sale.

Steam, Impluse, GOG, D2D and Gamersgate are all thriving digital distribution platforms and seem to convince me that if all of them can survive and compete, then there's probably a strong enough market.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio76d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing76d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9276d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit76d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing76d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9275d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
