Haters Saved FF7, Fans Doomed EarthBound

Chas Guidry writes: History tells us that Final Fantasy 7 is one of the most overrated games of all time while EarthBound is an overlooked work of art, but time makes fools of us all. The haters of FF7 and the fans of EB have unintentionally turned the tables on the games they love and hate with a little help from their creators.

choadley5670d ago

I'm glad someone wrote about how this tends to happen.

Bobbykotickrulesz5670d ago

Any amazing game is overrated according to morons.

Uncharted 2 was overrated. FF7 was overrated. MGS4 was overrated. Halo: Reach was overrated.

Seriously, shut the fuck up.

Gue15670d ago (Edited 5670d ago )

So true, the only good games are the "underrated".

And what is so good about Earthbound anyway? I have tried to play that game a couple of times but I just can't like it...

evrfighter5670d ago

overrated games are only labeled as such by the idiots who think they are "kewl".

dabri55670d ago

The thing about most really good games is the more popular it is the more likely there will be a very vocal group of people who very openly appose it due simply to the fact that it is very popular.
I have friends who loved FF7 when it first came out. I mean really loved it. One claimed he cried at the end of disk one. Now most claim they hate it and it was over hyped simply because so many other people like it.

Here is the deal. Earthbound is a good game. FF7 is a good game. There is a reason FF7 sold way more and is remembered more than Earthbound and it's not because Earthbound is overlooked. It's because FF7 was better backed and in general was (arguably) a better game.

poopface15670d ago (Edited 5670d ago )

but I dont care because people hate on FF7 because of people like me.

It is probably my 3rd favorite vidoe game ever, AND I HATE TURN BASED JRPGS. People cant stand that, and pretend like 10 million+ people have bad taste because its popular. Its popular because it is the best FF game to most people. I tried others and just got bored, FF7 was the only JRPG taht I really enjoyed, and it has actually become one of my favorite games ever.

xYokox5670d ago

If we base everything on popularity, then McDonalds is the best food, Titanic is better than No Country for old Men, Lady Gaga is up there with Freddy Mercury and so on.

radphil5669d ago (Edited 5669d ago )

" Its popular because it is the best FF game to most people."

It's popular cause it's the first one people played when moving into the next gen. You do realize that there was 6 others before hand, but barely anyone knew about FF in the US until it switched over to PS1. Hell in the US we only got THREE of them before hand, and they weren't in the number ordering. We got 1, 4, and 6 named as 1, 2, and 3. Then comes along FF7. People that did follow it went WTF while other people were like "Final Fantasy, this is a new game to me".

When you ask a person that FF7 was their favorite FF game, there's a very good chance it was the first one they played.

No one says FF7 is horrible. What people are going at is people are praising it way too much than it needs to be. That's the key.

Are more and more people finally acknowledging FF7 is overrated? About time!

JeffGrubb5670d ago

I think you may have only read the N4G description.

Eamon5670d ago

Well it wasn't overrated to the people who go it at its launch and absolutely fricking loved it.

It was my first FF game, a kid back then, and I remember going to the store and purchasing it after being recommended by the shopkeeper. I never regretted buying it.

poopface15670d ago (Edited 5670d ago )

you love ff6 or the HORRIBLE ff10 the most. hahahahhaa

FF10 and 8 were horrible to me. I hate turn based JRPGs, but FF7 is my 3rd favorite videogame ever.

I bet that makes you mad doesnt it.

Eamon5669d ago

FF6 and FF10 were both masterful games.

As you said, you hate turn based JRPGs so really, your opinion about FF games has no substance.

poopface15669d ago (Edited 5669d ago )

FF7 was so good that I enjoyed the gameplay, even though it is not something that I normally find appealing.

FF7 is the only turnbased RPG that has ever kept my interest. Enough so that it is one of my favorite games ever. It must have done something right.

hahhaha according to you, only people who like something can have an opinion on it??

Do you like to eat dog sh@t? I sure do and its wonderfull. Since you hate eating dog shit your opinion has no substance.

FF7 made my try FF8 and 10, I found them to be boring. I didnt like the story or the characters in those games. The magic system in FF8 was horrible I thought.

Sorry that I found a certain game to be so good taht I played something in a genra that usually bores the crap out me. I never said it was the best, but it sure a sh@t is not overrated.

FF7 is one of the most popular JRPGs ever, even in Japan I believe. It didnt become the most popular by being overrated.

dabri55669d ago (Edited 5669d ago )

Overrated is the wrong term to use. You see, that would require that the majority of people who play the game agree that the game doesn't deserve the praise/hype/scores that it got when in fact the majority of people do agree it deserves it. You heard from a bunch of people how good the game was and you didn't find it that great. I wouldn't label that as overrated. Not from the majorities standpoint.

If there was a game that came out that 99% of the people in the world agreed was a 10/10 game, and that 1% called it overrated, would you agree with the use of the term or would you just attribute that to differences in taste or the fact that you can't please everyone?

radphil5669d ago (Edited 5669d ago )

Take an example of WoW. It's great to many because it's monkeyproof, and easy enough to play, not because it's something entirely revolutionary. In comparison to many other MMOs, people don't take the time into learning said situations.

People from the fanbase try to make it as the best MMO ever. In terms, that would be considered overrated. It all depends on how the game came to be in comparison to other ones, which can still be opinionated. You look more upon how that 99% of the community acts to actually give some sense if it's overrated or not.

Many people say that smoking is one of the best things ever, but it's overrated. :p

radphil5669d ago

It's funny to see random disagrees without people even explaining any logic on here.

Earthbound is one of my fav games of all time, ff7 is also one of my fav games of all time, earthbound2 should be out now!

Vicophine5670d ago

Earthbound = Greatest RPG yet. Truly a classic.

xYokox5670d ago

Ah, another generic pseudo-intellectual waste of space article.

FF7 is highly overrated. Earthbound might not be the greatest rpg ever made, but when you look at Chrono Trigger, old Suikodens, Xenogears and about a dozen of similar games it 's quite obvious. Unfortunately, folks fail to see how my favourite game =/= best game ever made.

VenomUK98d ago

I’d love to know how many units have been sold of all the Final Fantasy VII franchise games, including the original, the remakes, spin offs such as Crisis Core, and mobile games Ever Crisis. I bet a fair few copies.

TheDreamCorridor99d ago

Modern day publisher be like: "Failed to meet sales expectations. Pivoting to live service."

aaronlif1099d ago

It's an absolute legend of a game. And I honestly really love how the remake trilogy is shaping up so far.

If you already own it... There, I saved you the click on a deliberately misleading article.

DivineHand125122d ago

I bought the game yesterday on steam for $4 because Square Enix is trying to replace it with a version that has no mod support.

Prior to yesterday, I had no idea the game had so many great mods until people started making a fuss out of it.

Knightofelemia122d ago

I wish Square would port other old games to newer systems I want Xenogears.

gold_drake122d ago

You can thank FF7 scaring Baldur's Gate 2's director 'S***less' for every RPG since

But BG2 didn't emerge in a vacuum, and in a recent chat with Slandered Gaming it emerged that—while we can thank BG2 for a lot of our favourite RPGs since—we have a whole other game to thank for BG2. That'd be Final Fantasy 7, which lit a fire under BG2 director James Ohlen to go all out with the game's structure and companions, per Trent Oster—who worked on the original Baldur's Gate and has since become CEO of Beamdog, the studio behind the BG1 and BG2 Enhanced Editions.
