Qualcomm Airs Coming Smartphone GPU That's as Powerful as PS3

Dailytech.com reports:

Imagine a dual-core-powered phone with enough graphics processing might to power a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. That's precisely what some of the smartphone industry's biggest hardware players are promising.

Next year, NVIDIA will air its Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip which comes complete with a dual-core ARM9 and super-powered mobile GPU. Not to be outdone, Qualcomm just announced its own plans for mobile hardware domination and they're shaping up to be equally impressive.

"The GeForce 7800 GTX (codenamed G70, and previously NV47) was the first GPU in the series, launched on June 22, 2005 with immediate retail availability."

Nothing to be amused about RSX is a toned down 7800GTX, would be a shame if they couldnt beat half a decade old tech.

GTmonster5669d ago

not you again, how much does nvidia pay you for this pr work?

raztad5669d ago (Edited 5669d ago )

Yet the RSX is paired with the Cell to produce UC2, GT5, KZ3 visuals. Not bad at all for an "ancient" arch, dont you think?

Ducky5669d ago (Edited 5669d ago )

Mostly because of the Cell, which is one beast of a procesor.
Otherwise, the GPU itself isn't all that special.

raztad5669d ago

I know but clearly it is meant to be like that. You cant just take the RSX out of its context. PS3 is not a PC.

Hideo_Kojima5669d ago (Edited 5669d ago )

Exactly show me a PC with a 7800gtx that can pull of a game like GT5 at 1080p and 60fps...

SHOW ME!

Rush5669d ago

PC and console games work very differently when it comes to visuals. Sure games like GT5 do look awesome on consoles and games like KZ2 also.

But your never see a console game with edges as smooth as seen on the PC with 4xAA or above, even using an 7800GTX you can still get certain PC games that look far smoother then anything seen on a current gen console.

Sure am not saying the end product is better then GT5, But you have to remember there is no secret trick to the PS3's power it's simply hours spend slaving over an old GPU getting every single tiny piece of power you can pull from it.

If a PC developer spend 5 years developing a game for a single GPU like an 7800GTX I have no doubt it would look better then any PS3 game paired with a decent quad core processor and 2/4 GIG or ram.

Fact is they don't so that's the reason a 7800GTX on a PC is considered weak, but what's found in the PS3 is no better it's just got more development time.

@"I know but clearly it is meant to be like that. You cant just take the RSX out of its context. PS3 is not a PC."

The PS3 was actually supposed to have 2 cell processors one for general purpose and one for graphics. The RSX was put in because 2 cells would have been too expensive at the time.

You fail you SOB! RSX is Geforce 7800GTX512 but with 256 dedicated. You fail everytime

jneul5668d ago

and yet x360 still has to get a game which looks better than uncharted 1 a game from around 2007 lol, gfx alone is not enough the times of relying in gfx cards alone is running out, ps3 has set the new standards of doing things and it gives much more room than just nice graphics, you get more objects on screen, better physics, better ai, larger maps, tell me which one you prefer lol

madpuppy5669d ago

that is all well and good but, how do they tackle the power needs and heat that will result from these chips?

After all, that is one of the main issues for this generations consoles and PC's

Ju5669d ago (Edited 5669d ago )

This will be very interesting to see. Even with current latests mobile GPUs (e.g. the Humingbird or Snapdragon/Adreno250) game time varies between 2-4 hours at max.

I am very curious to see, how they can run full featured GpGPUs and multicore CPUs on battery for the same amount of time.

Not in power safe mode. That I can see. Nobody needs multicore and shaders to surf the web on a phone or tab.

Fact is, most of current phones don't even have the latest tech. Where is the phone with the Adreno 250?

ProjectVulcan5669d ago (Edited 5669d ago )

High end smartphone chipsets are <1 watt thermal envelope. Well below it in fact.

A mobile GPU that is faster than RSX designed for low power is still around 25-30 watts- something like a 40nm GT335M. Even if that had an optical shrink to 28nm it would not be any less than 10 watts.

RSX is a 300 million transistor GPU. As such its performance would be impossible to match inside a phone because of power constraints- for now. Give it another couple years.

The Lazy One5669d ago

you don't need 100% of the processor ALL the time. It's a big part of why so many people root their android phones. As long as manufacturers start modifying the OS and stop filling the phone with bloatware you can get really good life out of it.

Of course if we developed batteries that were better than the piles of shit we have now, all that would go away.

The heat issue will be interesting though.

branchedout5669d ago

That's either a big compliment to the phone or a big insult to the ps3/360. I can't figure out which.

Even if they can churn out the graphical quality, are they going to be able to put out a resolution that doesn't suck?

And will anyone be able to afford it? I'm getting the feeling that for the price of this phone, I could buy half a year's worth of food.

Biggest5669d ago

That's what I'm wondering. It is just a phone. Not hard to make something looks awesome on a handheld screen.

Ju5669d ago

We have to accept that those companies made progress with their silicon since the 360/PS3 has been release.

Performance wise I can see they can hit that milestone. It will not replace consoles. Or maybe it will. Take a look at the Huawei S7 with docking station. $299. Adreno 205 (too slow for gaming), but could run PS2/Wii like games today - in 720p.

silvacrest5668d ago

consider how much smarphone tech progresses, we get new chips and hardware almost monthly

also consider how old the 360 and PS3 are, its not like this happened a day after the 360 released

technology advances given time

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle31d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

To be fair, there are also human made games that release and lack any fun at all either.

jznrpg33d ago

But all of the great games have been made by humans

jwillj2k433d ago

One is by choice, the other is a feature.

PRIMORDUS33d ago

Guild Wars 2 been playing for 14yrs, 1st beta. This is just one company I support, Arenanet and NCSoft, even though I torrent, there are a few PC companies I will buy from. "PlayStation’s Horizon MMO spin-off, Horizon Steel Frontiers." I feel this will be good, NCSoft is a good developer/publisher.

CrimsonWing6932d ago

It’s a tool. Use it elevate things and get it done faster. I’m sorry but not every game made by humans is good. If this can help things, then I fully embrace it.
