Kinect: The $150 Paperweight

Is it too early to refer to Microsoft’s motion controller as a waste of money?

...but it has "potential", lol!

xxxAnubisxxx5664d ago

Yeah, you have no idea how tired I am of people saying that.

WaggleLOL5664d ago (Edited 5664d ago )

Get use to hearing it. It's become the defacto excuse for Microsoft lying about what Kinect is actually capable of.

Kinect is all Microsoft has left with the Xbox 360. Most of the gaming press isn't willing to trash it because to do so pretty much means the end of the Xbox 360. Without the Kinect hype the Xbox 360 is looking at a barren 2011 and beyond.

doa7665664d ago

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

maybe you can give it to a girl you like and then use it to spy on her bedroom, I can't think of any use for gaming though

darthv725664d ago (Edited 5664d ago )

I distinctly recall many saying the same about (insert console here).

Reality check! The hardware is only as good as the software. If the software NEVER evolves past these first few titles then I will gladly agree. It's a paper weight.

However, so many short sighted people just do not or maybe its WILL NOT accept that there will be better titles to come. That way of thinking just doesnt need to happen.

Skeptics are one thing but flat out denial is another. Every console released since the 2600 had lots of skepticism put towards the initial release. Patience and keeping an open mind lead to even greater titles being released.

If we all turned our back at was the initial launch of a console. We wouldnt be gaming. I didnt care for the hate towards the PS3 or the wii or 360 and i dont think it is warranted towards the move or kinect either. For gamings sake people. These are just the delivery units to entertain us.

If you want to hate on something, hate the software. Don't hate the hardware or the people that like it.

doa7665664d ago

maybe it'll be useful to sort out gamers

in the sense that casuals posing as hardcore will just go with Kinect and leave multiplayer games free of campers, quietters, cheaters, annoying screming morons and the like

SixZeroFour5664d ago

it does have potential, but probably not in gaming

there are already 2 vids showing its potential outside of gaming

http://www.youtube.com/watc...
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

and those are just the first stages of the experiments

Arnon5664d ago (Edited 5664d ago )

I'm really starting to think you're just not allowed to enjoy anything that comes from Microsoft if you frequent N4G.

I was able to play a public demonstration of Kinect at my college, and every single person who played it found it to be nothing but good, pure fun. I really am not understanding the hate towards Microsoft and Kinect. I played through Kinect Adventures 3 times with a bunch of friends simply due to the fact that we were having a blast, and it was incredibly fascinating seeing the avatars on the raft actually mimic your entire body.

To the people who continuously hate on Kinect - Have you actually tried just ending this ridiculous fanboy banter and giving it a try for the sake of just having fun?

(The Microsoft Representative also confirmed to me that Gears of War 3 and the next Call of Duty will be featuring Controller/Kinect support)

they defend this device only cuz its MS .. there is nothing for them in it..

we ps3 owners are actually going to have games to play with move.. so u guys should understand why we support it

Pennywise5664d ago

So has the xbox become the new "waitstation"? Seems like the tables have turned and all the people having a problem waiting for Ps3 games are okay to wait for 360 games.

- Hypocritical action #123.

He just knock that one out of the park.

darthv725664d ago

I will disagree with you. Yet I will also agree as well. Correct about those calling the PS3 the waitstation. That is just the typical childish nature of those who feel insecure about themselves. The table can be turned the other way.

The same tactics are being applied to this device from PS3 fans who (don't know why) seem to feel threatened (so to speak) at this device being released for the 360. In no way is it threatening the traditional way we play games on the PS3. Not even Move is a threat to traditional gaming. These are alternatives and in some cases requirements.

I am a believer in potentiality. I believed in the potential that games would get better for the genesis and snes and playstation. You know what....? I was right. I could be wrong about kinect getting better but I keep an open mind and try to be optimistic even in the face of all the mud slinging.

This whole gen has been nothing but one long running political race. Actually...since the beginning of console competition it has been that way. This one just happens to be way more vocal than the others.

In reality, the software for the device has no where to go but up. It takes creativity in development to make a great game. We have seen plenty of duds because of that element being shelved in order to rush things. I liked the old days of the genesis myself.

That was really a system with limitations as compared to the SNES and yet the games for it kept getting better and better. A testament of a really good developer is how they take what limitations are in front of them and make something that works the way others didnt think possible.

Kinect is just a camera right now...but what does the future hold for it in the hands of creative minds?

visualb5664d ago

not the waitstation!

its the new peripheral PaperWAIT- It has potential ;P

sorry I had too <_< on topic:

Im no kinect fan, but MS launched Kinect as a new console, and a new console usually has a bad launch game lineup, so...lets wait at least until the "real" games come

if those fail bad, then trollololololo

darthv725664d ago

I backed up my disagree with (IMO) a rational response. It wasn't insulting or childish and yet I get hit with disagrees.

Are the disagrees because my response sounds defensive? It seemed neutral but then again I can't always tell myself. So I guess others who read it are better at critiquing than me.

Please (being serious here) share where it could have been improved. Nothing outrageously one sided but actual intelligent conversation.

Thank you.

number475664d ago (Edited 5664d ago )

Darth,

THANK YOU for having the temerity to respond.

However I can't help but see that you just agree, and are just confirming how much you agree with your response. As its lacking any real response to the lack of shown potential from Kinect being any more than words & PR.

I am responding to the direct comparisons of potential. Potential is defined by offering better & more technically advanced gaming than the 360. This was the sell from Sony. Which was directly backed up by its introductory lineup. These titles stretched their wings when it came to technical abilities. No one can really discount the resolution, online, and scale of Resistance. It was just deemed as a flop and compared to Gears of War. The same is said for the rest of the titles. The fact is that Sony's potential was shown in a tangible way.It was potential that could be seen & experienced, to where making the speculative about what a capable developer would do with the tech, wouldn't be far fetched considering the building blocks are right in front of you. We now have a game with 256 players. The potential was 32-64. Just an example.

Kinect's potential isn't illustrated by anything that hasn't already been done by basic devices.I'm not going to feign excitement in what the future holds, as the future is now. And it was there before Kinect surfaced. There are only a handful of experiences gained from gesture controls. This isn't me, these are facts. People have been doing gesture based gaming for years, there is only so many things you can do with hitting things on a screen with 4 appendages, maybe 5 or 6 if you count body & head. Putting Kinect in the hands of Crytek isn't going to make a magical experience, just as giving a PSEye to Naughty Dog wont create a new experience. It will be interaction with something on a screen. Where you only have so many possible ways to do so. Thats the limt.

Your post comes from an ignorance of webcam game development. You're starting from 0, where as PC and other developers have already maximized the control-less gaming in the world. If Kinect was the first of its kind, then yes, all I could say is that I agree with your assessments of potential. Im not drinking the kool-aid from Peter Monelux, or Microsoft. I know what the reality of these game types are as well as interaction. Anything Kinect will do in the future, has/and is already being done by Optic based interaction right now. You can control your computer with gestures, and play any game with a camera right now. Yet, its not taking the world by storm.

Kinect is nothing like the old days of Genesis, where new gaming experiences were right around the corner. This couldn't be any more incorrect. Its nothing like going from sidescrollers to 3d games. Kinect is in the world of gaming 2010. Which pretty much has every single base covered. RTS/FPS/TPS/Adventure/RPG/Side scroller/Experimental etc. These are all defined gaming genres that borrow and pick from others, but Kinect isn't inventing any new genre. If it did, or even if it had an example of it, you'd be correct in dreaming about potential. Unfortunately, its just the wrong point in history for kinect to do anything outside of have a 500 million dollar advertising budget, and release hits from the Wii.

I don't care for the move one bit, for the same identical reasons. Gimmicks are gimmicks, but there is nothing in either that make me think about the potential of them. We use mice for a reason, its faster than holding up your hands. Technologies will always come out and be great novelties. But we are talking about a specific device, that already has a specific set of tasks(gaming genres) out there.

And oh yea, its an add on, not a new device, with new games. Its this gens Activator.

FragMnTagM5664d ago (Edited 5664d ago )

I agree. I like to use my Kinect for about an hour a day. My kids love it too.

Still don't get why everyone hates on it so much. It is actually a cool device.

Also, this is complete and utter bullshit: "Chances are, the Xbox will tell you how poorly lit your room is about a dozen times while you scramble to turn on every light switch in the house."

That is completely and totally untrue. I can use it in any lighting condition in my house without a problem and my lighting conditions are not the best.

This guy is just looking for hits is all.

Furthermore, there is nothing in the setup that tells you to turn on lights at all. This guy is full of crap.

Zeevious5664d ago (Edited 5664d ago )

Glad you like it...I also like and use YourShape...it's about the only thing keeping Kinect out of it's box and back on the Customer Service shelf at the store with a refund in my pocket.

To me...It is an AVERAGE device at a PREMIUM price.
I don't believe in paying a premium for potential NOW when I can just buy it later when it really works as promised, and is likely cheaper.

Example: Blu-Ray - $98 for a player that was $600 4 years ago and the new ones do even more!

The lighting issue is not Bull or "completely and totally untrue"
Your's may just be ideal...good for you.

I had to adjust mine, but had already done that for Move. I've seen Kinect in 4 different installation settings, and 2 of them it worked poorly and that seemed to be due to lighting. In 1 it would not work at all (ok "worked" but was not really usable)

Every setup is different.

Your's seems ideal but I've seen others that did not work well.

Claiming the guys full of crap is your opinion. One he could very well have about you, because you're claiming it works flawlessly.

Let's just say you're both exaggerating...and that truth is often found between the lies.

ryuzu5664d ago

"Still don't get why everyone hates on it so much. It is actually a cool device."

Well besides the sibling rivalry of PS3 vs 360 I think a lot of "traditional" gamers aren't happy that they're not getting the games they expect from a console like the 360 and in exchange they get games you want to play for "about an hour a day" (if you're a kid).

r.

Sez 5664d ago

"This guy is just looking for hits is all"

The sad thing is sonyfanboys fall for it everytime looking for something negative about kinect. Sad bunch they are

Zeevious5664d ago

Except I don't believe either of them.

I believe only my direct, firsthand experience and it is an Average device with a Premium price.

Why should I pay a Premium now for Average if the potential is promised later...buy it later!

I really don't see the "ohhhh" factor of this thing...To me...so far, without it's mythical "potential" it's nothing more today than EyeToy+ and I've had that potential for 6 years now.

Look up a game on YouTube called Antigrav...DAMN fun!
Now tell me I've yet to see something different to fill that $150 hole in my bank!

thats why this e3 is going to be very interesting for M$.they're going to have to show something resembling a core game, with depth.and i for one want to see what they can come up with.

ajlopo5664d ago

this guy's an idiot, only in the initial set up do you need a well lit room. I have played in all different lighting conditions and have had no problems. hennessey865664d ago

to be honest half of these so called hardcore gamers probably started gaming after the playstaytion one and they think they know it all. Ive been gaming for about 20 years and i love kinect. blackburn55664d ago (Edited 5664d ago )

I would like to see some of this 'potential' everyone keep talking about. Everytime someone talks about potential, they talk about games that aren't even close to release, games that don't exist or Dance Central. Well if Harry Potter, Fighters Uncaged and Sonic Riders are examples of Kinect's 'potential' when you make something that isn't a mini or dance game then I am afraid to see what the so called hardcore and complex Kinect games will be like. @ Godmars290 you are so right. Sony showed everyone what the PS3 could just like they did with the Move. They showed off all the features of the PS3 which where available at the time. Everyone just keeps coming up with imaginary things Kinect MIGHT do. Where are the demos of what Kinect might do? How about less talk and more proof for once Microsoft.

FragMnTagM5664d ago

Hey, when the PS3 first came out it took, what 2 years to get some AAA games? Kinect has been out for almost 2 weeks, and everyone is complaining. Geesh. Give it at least a year before all this damn hate.

I waited for the PS3 about 6 months and got one. I am happy with my purchase and am a proud member of PSN+. I prefer my XBOX and Live, but I have a PS3 and enjoy it too. It is possible to like more than one thing.

you can't actually "SEE" potential. It is a phrase that means to envision what could be. The results of that envisioning generally come later.

I can see (envision) potential with this device that goes beyond standard gaming. Right now we are the guinea pigs for it.

You have to have an open mind towards technology and future interactions with entertainment as well as other uses.

Biggest5663d ago

So it's one of those things that you can't actually play? I don't understand your points at all. You are excited for the future. EVERYONE is excited for the future. I can't wait to fly on my hoverboard. I've been waiting for 20 years on that one though. You aren't guinea pigs for the technology. You wouldn't have to pay $150 for someone to test a product using you as the test subject. You're a guinea pig for their stock price. How big can you make a pipe dream while keeping it realistic enough for people to actually believe it'll happen soon enough for people to waste their money on it? That is you in a nutshell.

Zeevious5663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

No...that's marketing/PR BS if I ever heard it.

I was promised much more NOW that I paid for NOW.

This is an EyeToy+ and that's it.

I can show you at least 10 virtually identical game video's on YouTube where I am the controller...or I WAS years ago on a PS2 with an EyeToy.
http://www.youtube.com/resu...

I was promised something new.
I got an old idea with a $150 price tag...and it worked about as well as a gaming device the last time around.

I don't bet on crystal-ball marketing -- I bet with my wallet and right now it's $150 or empty by about the total of 3 blockbuster exclusives.

Where is the Kinect I was promised today -- Not the EyeToy of yesterday!

Master of Unlocking5664d ago

I would label the Power Glove, Kinect, and that Tony Hawk skateboard more as hardware addons hardware failure would be like the Virtual Boy and one day Stadia.

Magog1582d ago

Kinect was bundled with every Xbox One and inflated the price on an already underpowered and low RAM machine so for the One it wasn't an accessory as much as a white elephant.

CaptainHenry9161582d ago (Edited 1582d ago )

Definitely the RROD but that power glove had a lot of issues as well. The Kinect just didn't work

1582d ago
CrimsonWing691582d ago

Hardware add-ons are more like RAM or a video card, basically components that enhance capabilities or performance of the computer.

If you really want to get technical the Kinect is more of a peripheral device, kind of like a keyboard or mouse to a computer.

ThatsGaming1582d ago

The person in this article obviously is not up on their gaming history....

Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Coleco Gemini, Commodore 128, Commodore Amiga, Atari 5200, Atari 7800 were all massive failures and in most cases cost their companies participating in future gaming generations.

Gamer791582d ago

Sega saturn (successful in Japan) and dreamcast were not failures.
Seems like you're not up on you're gaming history

septemberindecember1581d ago

@Gamer79

How in the world are the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast not seen as failures? They both sold around 8M each, which is much lower than the ~30M that the Genesis had sold before it, and even the Master System before that. They were both the worst selling consoles in their respective generation (PS1, N64 outsold Saturn, PS2, GC, and Xbox outsold Dreamcast). Both of the consoles were incredibly short lived. The Saturn was discontinued in every territory but Japan after just three years. In Japan the console was discontinued after six years. Meanwhile the Dreamcast was discontinued worldwide in 2001 after launching in most territories in 1999 and in Japan in 1998. The failure of the Saturn and Dreamcast lead to Sega pulling out of the hardware market. Which, by the way, all of this occurred when Sega was massively dropping the price of their consoles quickly to compete. Sega was hemorrhaging money at this point.

None of this indicates a successful console. Saying the Saturn was a success because it did better in Japan is like saying the Vita is a success (they both sold around the same amount of units in Japan). Even the Wii U outsold these consoles worldwide.

Magog1582d ago

The picture should be the 360 RROD. When I think of gaming hardware failures that's what springs to mind. Kinect and it's bundled price tag definitely hobbled the already underpowered Xbox One though for sure so I would give it a close second place.

porkChop1582d ago (Edited 1582d ago )

That's not what the author means by failures. It's about hardware that failed in terms of sales (Wii U) or just failed to deliver on its promise (Kinect).

Magog1582d ago (Edited 1582d ago )

Given that the 360 had a year head start, much easier hardware to develop for, was cheaper, and still ended up in third place I think it qualifies especially when you factor in the frustration and huge losses incurred by RROD.

porkChop1581d ago

Selling over 80 million consoles isn't a sales flop. We get it, you don't like Xbox, but that doesn't mean the 360 is suddenly a failure.

Rhythmattic1581d ago

Porky....
You know how many people I know bought a 2nd or third 360 due to RROD? Even when MS had to confront the issue with replacement systems, my mates couldn't wait for even the turnaround of sending it in, and waiting for a replacement.,,..,..
If that's how you consider it a win... OK.. but so is having 5 , of which 3 don't function.... Its a win win....mwhahahahaha

porkChop1581d ago

"my mates couldn't wait for even the turnaround of sending it in"

You're acting like it would take months. When I sent my 360 in I got a new one literally 5 days later. As soon as MS had tracking confirmation that you sent yours, they'd send a new one to you the same day. No one is going to spend hundreds to buy a new console instead of waiting a week. I swear you guys pull some of the dumbest shit out of nowhere and think people will actually believe it.

Regardless, none of this changes the fact that this isn't what the article is even about.

Yup, and because of that big fiasco MS had to fork out 1 billion but knowing them I think they're very proud of the 360, it's the only time a MS console reached 80mil+ sales, RROD played a big part of that and a record they will never break again.

Rhythmattic1581d ago (Edited 1581d ago )

So true.. Even when MS accepted they where caught out in the biggest lie of any generation, The wait for a replacement was outweighed by just buying another, and having one be returned as a backup, which, btw, generally failed on first swap.
I own honestly can't believe MS tards are just supporting , or arguing why and what MS did by just dismissing it....

Stadia is a weird one. It hasn’t sold at all well but in terms of how it works it’s still miles ahead of Xcloud in terms of stability and performance. Xcloud is still a way behind and that needs sorting but it will be in time. Stadia for me is one of those things that will go down as a what could have been moments. With better marketing it could have been a roaring success. I still play it and it remains the best place in my opinion to play CyberPunk 2077. Only platform I have played it on without having any issues at all. The tech is great. The concept is fine. Marketing terrible. Shame really.

PrimeVinister1759d ago

Maybe. But they were two early for VR and too late for motion control

Their focus was marketing metrics. Information gathering for targeted advertising. Also "event curating" or head counting for special TV events. If MS had had their way with always online and mandatory Kinect pre COVID, as and during it they'd likely be turning into dominant presence in many Western homes. Be getting subsidized by Disney and other streamers as well as the NFL.

Thing was, Kinect as an actual game system, its games, just weren't ready. MS moved on it too soon. Thankfully.

Sorry but it was incredibly bad for gaming. The thing barely worked as intended and the games were broken shovelware. And let's not forget all the lies from Xbox to try and sell it. What happened to Milo?
It's like Xbox it's a perpetual lying machine.

PrimeVinister1758d ago

I had almost forgotten about Milo. It looks so unbelievable in retrospect. How did anyone believe it?!

Kinect requirement, TV focused, DRM, and $100 buried Xbone before it even stared.

PrimeVinister1758d ago (Edited 1758d ago )

I think Kinect was the worst of the bunch. They reversed DRM overnight and try to play down the TV stuff when they realised it made them look disinterested in gaming.

Kinect stuck around for six months, preventing sales and making more and more people upset when they dropped the Kinect and the price.

Atticus_finch1758d ago

Don't forget the inferior hardware which affects their game development to this day.
And the constant boasting and lying that hasn't change very much to this day.

I was kind of excited for the kinect. It had potential. That was until i tried it at one of their Microsoft store. The thing was so laggy and worker who was there, had no clue what he was doing. It kind of made rethink about buying an Xbox One with Kinect.

PrimeVinister1758d ago

I had already been turned off of the idea by Kinect for 360. Even when it worked, the games were bad and showed no potential.

Wii made you understand what they were going to do with it within about 10 seconds of Wii Sports. It went on to become a bit of a joke but at least it worked and had a purpose.

Thundercat771758d ago

The damage to the Xbox brand was so hard that til this day they are just the last place brand in the market.

PrimeVinister1758d ago

Totally. They haven't been really all that relevant since.

Godmars2901758d ago

That has to do with repeatedly failing, having to reaffirm only to again fail at creating a competent flow of decent games.

@PrimeVinister:
Until Game Pass and BC are mentioned. Only for the point to be missed.

kayoss1758d ago

thats because they dont know what they want to be. A gaming console, Television, or a gaming service?

Godmars2901758d ago

@kayoss:
They wanted, expected, to be Steam. To have everyone coming to them and paying for the privilege. That's the exact mentality on display when they tried to push always online.

Its sad because the Xbox one version of Kinect was actually pretty solid. Not for motion games, I couldnt care less about those, but for the other features that are now commonplace in the gaming ecosystem. Things like voice control and optional motion features in games. Stuff that Sony did with the PS camera was pretty sweet and they could have done some of that stuff with Kinect.

The tech was pretty sweet when implemented right though. Who remembers the implementation in Dead Rising 3?! You could lure zombies away by saying stuff into the kinect, it was a bit hokey at first, but it actually enhanced the game significantly once you learned all the different voice commands. There was and still is nothing else like that!

The focus on TV seemed to be an issue for people, but the TV pass through had some real potential. They could have had cable companies giving the XBone out instead of cable boxes! I understood what they were trying to do, but they needed to show the games too, and thats where they lost the core gamers. Being able to jump right to a sports event or TV show with out leaving the console was actually a pretty cool thing. I spent many nights switching between NHL games or TV shows and jumping right back into my games seamlessly, just by telling Kinect to do so. It was better than people care to admit, but I loved it!

People say XBone had no games, but on launch I got Dead Rising 3, AC Black Flag, Watch Dogs, Killer Instinct, Battlefield 4, Forza 5, and Ryse. That was actually a pretty solid lineup in hindsight! Then later on it got gems like Quantum Break, Dead Rising 4, Sunset Overdrive, Gears 4 and 5, the Ori games, Rare Replay, Forza Horizon 3/4, State of Decay 2, ReCore (SUPER UNDERRATED GEM), Halo 5, Halo Wars 2, and all the great 3rd party stuff as well! I dare anyone who sat on the Xbox One to go back and give it a shot now.

It was actually a pretty great console all things considered. Yes the PS4 had better 1st party stuff, stuff that MS just couldnt top or even compete with, but there are some really great games that a lot of people missed out on that they would probably really enjoy if they actually played them. Thats why I recommend a Series S and Gamepass to a lot of people, as its a great way to get an awesome lineup pf games for super cheap!
