OnLive games rival 'highest-end PC titles' - EA

Crysis and Bad Company 2 look just as good on OnLive as they do on the "highest-end PC" according to EA's senior VP Patrick Soderlund.

stop lying to the gaming public

soundslike5668d ago

Have you tried it?

Have you considered its not for people like you?

Have you ever posted anything that wasn't ignorant?

toaster5668d ago (Edited 5668d ago )

soundslike you mad (lol see what I did there). Did you order it? Buyer's remorse maybe.. do you honestly think that a streaming service could provide the same amount of performance as a high end PC?

soundslike5668d ago (Edited 5668d ago )

I didn't buy anything.
you don't have to have the box to use the service.

if you went to the site you would know that.

You can play 30 minute timed demos for free right now on your computer, and they will run no matter how crap your graphics card is.

But you didn't even go to the website let alone download the free service so you obviously know more about it right?

Motion5668d ago (Edited 5668d ago )

I have no desire to ever sub/buy OnLive, but yeah, I completely believe that it can bring streaming graphics equivalent to high end pc rigs. Its not like there aren't already services that deliver 1080p streaming content. This will just be an image rendered on a high end computer sever vs just straight video. The only thing that could be an issue is control latency. I fear things could feel a little sluggish there at times.

geth1gh5668d ago (Edited 5668d ago )

Actually I have been using onlvie on my pc. I was so stoked for it ever since it was announced and joined up for the beta in march/may 09 when it was first announced.

Now let me go ahead and tell you, after using it for a few hours, I never plan on using it again.

Just a big let down.

I have been using it on my pc, but I have my pc hooked up to my 42" 1080p 120hz lcd. And let me tell you, it looks like crap. there are no distinct lines anywhere and everything just kind of blurs together. it might not be as noticeable on a 17" monitor, but with this tv it is as plane as day. and I can imagine this being confirmed very soon with the actual game console coming out unless they have done some major overhauls to it.

and yes, i was running it in supposed hd which is supposed to run at 720p, but compared to my ps3 and 360 which run at 720p on the same tv, it still looks like garbage.

this is for people that don't have any gaming systems, and a really shitty pc.

if you have a gaming system or a half way decent pc, don't waste your time with it. it might be some what practical if you paid $50-$60 for the game ont he service and also got a license to actually install it on your pc or get a copy of the 360/ps3 version. hell, it would even be worth an extra $10.

but paying for a game on this service and having access to it no other way when i have a 360, ps3, and a decent gaming pc.... no thank you.

ProjectVulcan5668d ago (Edited 5668d ago )

Onlive has console level graphics, resolution and framerate. Which isnt anything close to what a high end PC can do. Or even a midrange PC. Case closed.

geth1gh5668d ago (Edited 5668d ago )

actually no, its not even console level graphics, look my comment above ^^^

it might pump out console level performance on the server side, but by the time it gets to you at your house it isn't nearly as good.

Yeah, I would like to try it before posting online about how I think it's a flop. The idea of cloud gaming IS the future. Instead of upgrading your hardware every few years, the company can update their hardware/servers and you will see an instant improvement to your service. I would like to test it myself for sure.

gamingdroid5668d ago

Now granted the hardcore doesn't control the gaming market like they used to (granted they still think they do), but people complaining about the lag in KillZone 2 controlls would surely notice the lag from your internet connect!

I don't see this taking off, but the positive about all of this is probably if they housed the P2P online gaming with the computers then suddenly lag is reduced considerably for those types of games which might even it all out....

8-bit5668d ago

The servers on their end have a lot do do with it you know. Hulu on my PS3 streamed SD like crap but Netflix has better servers that allow me to stream HD with no problems. People are so easy to dismiss this tech without even trying it.

gamingdroid5668d ago (Edited 5668d ago )

I know enough that Netflix isn't time sensitive from the time it occurs to the time it reaches the user, hence caching is possible.

Latency shouldn't be confused with bandwidth. Netflix has a lot of bandwith, but latency not necessarily.

In fact, the servers in this case has almost nothing to do with it because clearly they are high end gaming computers. The issue is the time it takes for something to occur on the screen until it reaches your screen that means not only latency in YOUR internet connection (not OnLive's), but also the time it takes to create that image before it even gets transmitted.

That is an inherent problem that is very difficult to solve, because it isn't just the company's internet connection/servers, but involves the users internet pipe that is out of OnLive's control.

More on latency vs. bandwith:

MNicholas5668d ago

I have a 15mbps cable internet connection.

Tried the batman arkham asylum demo (due to high resolution assets in that game).

The game stopped and jerked rather often.

The effective resolution was 480p at best but the flaws due to compression were simply too obvious.

The more movement there was in the scene the worst it seemed to get.

Static scenes were passable.

Bottom line: Infrastructure is not ready for high bandwidth real-time games.

OnLive's best bet: Set up in ISP datacenters to get a direct pipe to your customers so that you don't have to go through the internet.

gamingdroid5667d ago

Fiber optics is probably the best bet right now. Copper has a lot of latency and of course I'm discounting the fact that the data packets can take many different routes that also affects the latency.

Infrastructure is definitely not there yet.

Muffins12235660d ago

not lying, onlive uses the latest graphic card for streaming, they update to the latest graphic card every month,so if you got the best pc graphic card you could get a month ago, onlive will stream a better graphics card one month later.

Onlive is OnDoomed...and they know it.

Xfanboy5668d ago (Edited 5668d ago )

rig > onlive

Close_Second5668d ago (Edited 5668d ago )

You may be right however NO pirating + NO second hand game sales = more money for devs which may be a significant driver to the success of OnLive.

Tech issues re: performance will get sorted out so this may very well become a player in mainstream gaming. No one thought the Wii was going to succeed yet look at it now.

Baka-akaB5668d ago

The wii had overwhelmingly positive hype from the day it was revealed .

Blaster_Master5668d ago

yeah i think its pretty sweet. Me and my friends can use our crappy pc's and play games like Borderlands for rental instead of buying the game on console. Its a great idea. Too bad the micro console is 100 bucks, cause I would totally be using this once in a while.

Can you run Crysis in VR? Crysis VR Mod Available for Download

Holger Frydrych has just released a cool VR Mod for the 2007 version of Crytek's first-person shooter, Crysis.

Playing it right now looks amazing! :D
so much fun, i hope they make a vr mod for crysis 2 / 3 too!

DivineHand125487d ago

This is amazing. This is the direction VR should go in to boost adoption. Since I have beaten every Crysis except 1, this is now a good excuse to correct that problem.

Crytek Wanted Crysis To Be "Future-Proof"

According to Crytek CEO Cervat Yerli, "I want[ed] to make sure Crysis does not age, that [it] is future proofed, meaning that if I played it three years from now, it should look better than today." Yerli and the team designed Crysis' highest graphical settings for the PC hardware of 2010 and beyond.

While Crytek has officially announced Crysis 4 is in development, nothing new has surfaced. For now, gamers' only way to scratch that itch is to play the Crysis Remastered Trilogy available on PC and consoles.

OG 2007 Crysis (not the remastered weirdo), is & will forever be a legend amongst the PC community.

PrinceOfAnger492d ago

This video will always be impressive to me, even for years to come. Some things here are better than games we have today, OG crysis is the best version!

RaidenBlack492d ago

OG Crysis physics, man ... amazing! Thanks for the reminder!

PrinceOfAnger491d ago (Edited 491d ago )

Looks really nice with VR mod too

FinalFantasyFanatic492d ago

I'm still shocked that it looks as good as it does today, puts some modern games to shame.

Profchaos491d ago

I thought the remaster was fine tbh some rough edges at launch but after some patches it's decent

isarai492d ago

I mean the lighting and physics still hold up extremely well. I still revisit it from time to time.

RedDeadLB492d ago

That CPU performance thing is preventing it.

isarai491d ago

Yeah unfortunately Crystek's decision to bet on the linear progression of clock speed in CPUs was derailed by the unforseen shift towards multicore CPUs. It just wasn't built with that in mind because that wasn't even in the conversation at the moment

DivineHand125492d ago

I remember when I tried to play Crysis with my Intel Pentium Dual core E2200 @2.2GHz , 4GB ram and GeForce 9400gt. I was a kid back then and that was the best I could do. I would get about 15 to 20 fps. When I over clocked the CPU to 2.8GHz I would get about 40fps. The experience wasn't good at all and it was the only PC game I could not run back then unless and put the settings on low. At that point the game went from cutting edge graphics to PS2 graphics. To this day I haven't completed the OG Crysis. I was able to complete Crysis 2 and 3 after building a new PC when I got my first job.

HyperMoused491d ago

Never played it, worth a try you think?

Profchaos491d ago (Edited 491d ago )

Worth a try just because it's the only game that lets you pick up a turtle on the beach and throw it at enemy soldiers that should have been a back of the box feature.

But nah seriously unless you're nostalgic for it I'm not sure if it will hold up

Crytek went so overboard on the Crysis tech and sent devs to photograph leaves in Haiti

"The shader work that came out of this was mind-blowing at times."

RaidenBlack505d ago

Amazing, often misunderstood
The dumb AI was deliberate, so that the players can explore and experiment with the world and all the features.

vTuro24504d ago

It really is. Most people only remember it for its graphics but the gameplay was equally amazing.

RaidenBlack505d ago

Hope they try to pour nearly same amount of dedication to the new Crysis 4

DefenderOfDoom2505d ago

Well worth the extra work ! I enjoyed all 3 Crisis games and would also love a new one .

JunonZanon505d ago (Edited 505d ago )

Still wish game development was overall this passionate and minutious about their projects. Obviously, there are still some great studios as exceptions.

LikAChicken504d ago

I’ll never forget Far Cry 2 and the amount of details they packed in.

Yea there were some issues with the gameplay loop and the sickness aspect but you could tell they really tried to nail details.

DivineHand125504d ago

I haven't beaten the first Crysis but I did play Crysis 2 and Crysis 3. I know some PC players were annoyed by the last 2 games being developed with consoles in mind but I believe it was an improvement. I had a great time with Crysis 3 to the point where I believe it was too short.
