The Sad Truth About My Kinect

AOTF: With Kinect's launch just two weeks behind us, early adopters of the product have had some time to allow the purchase to sink in. I am one of those early adopters and truthfully, my Kinect isn't plugged in to my Xbox 360 right now and it hasn't been for about a week. And it's not because the product isn't good. Kinect is extremely fun to play if only for the workout that you get from playing just about any of the titles that are out now. But Kinect is a truly frustrating toy for the core gamer.

Bingo. That's about how I feel. But I have to chalk it up also to Call of Duty and Assassins Creed Brotherhood coming out so close to the release of Kinect. I mean you can't expect some shovelware crap games to compare to two of the best games that have come out in what is probably the best year in gaming. Ever.

doa7665672d ago

it's just beyond my understanding how anyone who calls himself a core gamer could've possibly think that Kinect could be useful for gaming unless they're a brainwashed xbot

I got a feeling that most real gamers reaction to reading this would be:

"well, duh, what did you expect?"

Dee_915672d ago

i agree
it might be fun for parties and get together
but other than that just playing it by your self would be so lame and boring

Kurt Russell5672d ago

I consider myself a core gamer... I don't own kinect or MOVE, but I have played them and think they're fun... in other words I disagree with doa766, they have their place in gaming and both carry potential - whether they sink or swim is impossible to tell this early on.

doa7665672d ago (Edited 5672d ago )

I never said Move is useless for gaming, I have it and it's great, RE5 gold edition, MAG and HEavy Rain work great with it

and when I said Kinect is useless for gaming I meant core gaming

the Wii and Move can be use for core gaming and casual, but Kinect is only for casual

no matter how hard MS tries to change the definition what it's commonly known as "core gaming" Kinect will NEVER feature a game worthy of competitive multiplayer or long single player campaigns not on rails

ico925672d ago

its mainly due to the fact that Microsoft keeps saying that Kinect can work with core games, what games are they talking about ? i simply can't imagine playing and FPS on Kinect.

How is this how you feel when you called all the games shovelware crap, making me think you didn't buy it because you think the games are crap, meaning this isn't how you feel because you haven't used Kinect?

Those shoveware crap games don't have to be compared to those games you mentioned. I bought Kinect, Kinect Sports, and Black Ops all in the same week and enjoying all 3 of them. The author of this article needs to check his settings on Kinect because I'm having none of these issues. I don't need 6-8 feet to play, I can play in the pitch dark (and I usually do because I'm a night person), I can play sitting down, and I haven't had any lag that makes either of the two games I own unplayable.

This guy thinks changing his lighting condition will make the game magically work, the thing has an infrared camera for a reason. The only time you need good lighting is for the facial recognition, and even then it tells you to calibrate it in different lighting conditions to insure it can detect you in any lighting. Kinect doesn't need light to work properly for the games, I've played in a pitch black room and notice no differences when playing in a well lit room.

hankmoody5672d ago

Even though you've made a good point but you're racking up the disagrees.

T9X695672d ago (Edited 5672d ago )

I could care less who agrees/disagrees with me. Not one person on this site or any other site can say anything to make me think Kinect doesn't work, or Kinect has issues doing this and that, etc. I actually own the thing, and played quite a few games (unlike 90% of the users on this site that claim Kinect doesn't work) and it works great. Like I said, I can play sitting down, standing up, in the pitch dark, from 4-5 feet away, with no lag that effects the gameplay. I'm sure if I stopped and really looked I could see the lag, but when I'm actually playing the game, I'm to focused on what I'm doing to notice the very slight bit of lag it does have.

What I find sad is most of the haters on this site get so worked up about Kinect being only casual for the time being. It's like it hurts their soul to see someone or a core gamer enjoy casual games. The way I see it, the more games I can enjoy and play, the better. Hell, I took one look at Peggle and was like....ok rainbows and unicorns.....yea I'll pass. Then I got it for free through a contest and Peggle is a pretty bad ass game.

Hate on causal games all you want, but it one thing to be like "Oh that looks gay" and another to actually enjoy it. I've played enough core games in my time to set some back and enjoy other areas of gaming, such as casual games.

@Jdoki - See that's the thing, I didn't praise Kinect like it's some awesome, revolutionary piece of hardware. I play tested Kinect in NYC and the lag was very noticeable which is why I was skeptical about picking it up. Since then, the beta testers who got Kinect early did a good job with their feedback because now the issues are not present. I'm not saying every game works with little to no lag, I only have Kinect Adventures and Kinect Sports, and played the demos of Joyride, Dance Central, and a fitness game (don't remember the name). Hell I could upload the pics Kinect took while I was playing Kinect Adventures, and you know what you would get? A picture of a black square, because that's how dark it is where I'm playing.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

See all those tiny little dots? That's why you don't need a well lit room to play Kinect. Kinect doesn't need light to track your body movements when it uses a infrared emitter.

It's also funny how all those people hating on Kinect and how horrible it is, that it doesn't work, months before release...

are also the ones who still say Kinect doesn't work, full of lag, needs proper lighting conditions, yet doesn't own one. It's easy to say something doesn't work, or someone is lying about something working, when you don't own the thing yourself.

Rush5672d ago

Yeah I think it's best to just yawn and walk away when you see a Kinect article on N4G, you can speak common sense facts and figures it doesn't get you anywhere.

Best just to let the trolls attack what there afraid of and remember N4G has no effect on the real world anyways.

Jdoki5672d ago

Funny how those who were most vocal on N4G about how fantastic, revolutionary, and awe inspiring Kinect was going to be, months before release...

...are also the one's who have zero issues and somehow managed to get magical special edition versions that work in any light condition, never lags, and can alter the very fabric of reality so they don't require as much space to use!

Game-ur5672d ago

"... I can play sitting down, standing up, in the pitch dark, from 4-5 feet away, with no lag.."

OK this is total BS.

I played the thing and its always a hard time controlling, and most of the games ARE shovelware, Kinect adventures, K sports and Joy ride are basically the same game spread on 3 discs.

Kurt Russell5672d ago (Edited 5672d ago )

a fwiend of a fwiend has kinecto lag... it's bullshit xbot nonsense, my MOVE rapes it BECAUSE SONY R DA BEST COMPANY IN THA WORLD AND look after my interwests over their own pockets...

SONY R GODZ AND I AM THE HOOKER THAT BLOWS DEM!

N4G is pretty gobshite site :/ Getting sick of the same arguments by the same teenagers. Anything outside of Sonys corporation seems to get shit talked down as if it is really any different from the things they release. I have a PS3 it's great... but it isn't THAT great, not enough to turn me into a droid cultist all of a sudden.

UnwanteDreamz5672d ago

Maybe you need a break? This an opinion piece. You calling the writer a liar because he is not in love with Kinect makes you seem pathetic. What is it with people like you? You write 200 words to defend Kinect from this guys opinion?

You deff need a break.

This is actually probably the worst year in gaming in a while. Last year and the year before were much better.

TheOldOne5672d ago (Edited 5672d ago )

for 360 ye. Only good exclusives were alan wake and halo reach imo. kinect sucks. I wished MS didnt concentrate so hard on kinect.

for ps3 on the other hand it was a great year and 2011 looks even better.

unfortunately i cant say the same about 360s 2011 cos its only got gears. hopefully MS will stop concentrating on kinect and announced some few suprises.

Kurt Russell5672d ago

Mass Effect it worth your time too - But PS3 only had a few titles this year that I purchased. I mainly stuck with multiplats.

frostypants5672d ago (Edited 5672d ago )

The best year ever for gaming was when Doom came out.

Get off my lawn.

@TheOldOne: I think it was a weak year for exclusives for both the 360 and PS3.

TooTall195672d ago

2009 was amazing. I can't get enough Killzone 2.

Jazz41085671d ago

I was thinking the exact oppisite. I purchased at least 3p games this year for the 360 and 2 for my ps3. I agree there mainly multplats but they seem to play better on the 360 imo. Next year with sonys lineup I think it will be a total reverse where my 360 gatjers dust and my ps3 gets the lovve but this year ps3 did not have much guys.

Not really a problem with Kinect, just a fact of what happens to gaming items that aren't your primary means of gaming. I haven't used my DS or PSP much compared to my PS3. It's just the way it is.

So what. This is what Microsoft wanted anyways. A gamer like the OP shouldnt be playing Kinect anyways. They want the moms from the Burger Kind commerical for kinect. They want the kids play kinectimals not halo/cod/gears plyers.

KingME5672d ago

Kinect and Move both have their place in the gaming world. The problem is that some of these hard headed gamers are refusing to accept the periphal for what it's designed for or for what it's strong points are.

I don't see anyone trying to play a FPS with a steering wheel, and you also won't see any true driving fans using move to seriously play GT5.

If you stick to the games that the periphal was designed for, then you will have fun with it. If you feel that you will somehow soil your reputation as a gamer by playing casual games, then don't buy it. But also do us all and favor and shut up about it also.

My son plays the heck out of sports games, he plays Madden, NBA 2k11, FIFA, NHL, etc. He also play Modern warfare, and fable III. He bought Kinect and he also bought move and plays the hell out of both of them.

You know why, because he is a "GAMER" not a "core", "hardcore", or "casual" gamer. He is a "TRUE" gamer if it's fun, he'll play it. I am so glad that he doesn't get caught up in all this finger pointing and hating that happens on N4G.

I showed him this site, I asked him a couple of weeks ago have he been on N4G and he said "Pops, there is just too much crying and whining on that site for my taste." this is sad because in the end, this is suppose to be a site for gamers. :(

Merivigian5671d ago

If you enjoy a game, PLAY IT. That's what gaming is about.. it's not ALL about being 3rd prestige in Black Ops. I think a lot of people are pretty closed minded about Kinect, why can't a game still use a controller but use Kinect at the same time? Be able to do stuff like emotion recognition and use of a player's reaction to certain events to show how much they care/don't care about a situation. There are many subtle uses for Kinect, and I think we'll see them sooner or later.

Viper75672d ago

My move has also been unplugged for few weeks thanks to games such as Fallout new vegas. Played trough resident evil 5 and had a blast, but 1 game can only last so long (yes I haven't bough heavy rain yet, shame on me).

Some could even say that Wii is suffering from the same thing, especially for people who also own Ps3 or X360.

joydestroy5672d ago

yeah i haven't played with my Move for almost a month now. but that's mostly because of the onslaught of games i still have yet to complete such as:

Vanquish
Castlevania
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit
Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2
Fable 3
Metro 2033

and all of those have recently been put on the back burner thanks to CoD BO and Halo Reach multiplayer.

GT5 next week...yeah it's gonna be a little while before i pick up the Move again.

Jdoki5672d ago

Yeah, I made an impulse purchase of a Move controller when I heard how much fun Tumble was.

It's still good for a bit of casual multiplayer, but there are a lot of games I need to complete.

Wouldn't mind picking up Time Crisis for Move though. I love the arcade and PS2 games.

doa7665672d ago

I played a lot with Move when it came out, I completed RE5 gold edition, Heavy Rain and the Table Tennis from Sport Champions

now it's on hold waiting for Little Big Planet 2, Killzone 3, Sorcery and more

on the other hand Kinect has no future other than small variations of what there's already available

forcefullpower5672d ago

I am with you on getting time crysis. I loved all those types of games at the arcades. I hope they release a multi game dics with loads of the old sytle time crisis

FunAndGun5672d ago

Time Crisis: Razing Storm is a good time with the Move and gun attachment. There are 3 games on the disc and actually Deadstorm Pirates is my favorite of the 3.

If you enjoy arcade light gun shooters, you will not be let down.

The only thing I hate is you have to use the move button on the controller to reload or take cover. Meaning holding it with two hands. Would have been great if they made an option to reload on your other hand with a Nav or DS3 so that you could always just aim with one hand. Deadstorm Pirates doesn't require an extra button so you can just blast away!! Good times with another player involved.

seinfan5672d ago

lol I knew the people who bought the stupid peripheral would have it just sitting there. What a waste of money.

Moentjers5672d ago

Every night I play one hour table tennis on Sports Champions. It's just to cold to go running so this is a nice replacement for the moment.

I would label the Power Glove, Kinect, and that Tony Hawk skateboard more as hardware addons hardware failure would be like the Virtual Boy and one day Stadia.

Magog1589d ago

Kinect was bundled with every Xbox One and inflated the price on an already underpowered and low RAM machine so for the One it wasn't an accessory as much as a white elephant.

CaptainHenry9161589d ago (Edited 1589d ago )

Definitely the RROD but that power glove had a lot of issues as well. The Kinect just didn't work

1589d ago
CrimsonWing691589d ago

Hardware add-ons are more like RAM or a video card, basically components that enhance capabilities or performance of the computer.

If you really want to get technical the Kinect is more of a peripheral device, kind of like a keyboard or mouse to a computer.

ThatsGaming1588d ago

The person in this article obviously is not up on their gaming history....

Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Coleco Gemini, Commodore 128, Commodore Amiga, Atari 5200, Atari 7800 were all massive failures and in most cases cost their companies participating in future gaming generations.

Gamer791588d ago

Sega saturn (successful in Japan) and dreamcast were not failures.
Seems like you're not up on you're gaming history

septemberindecember1588d ago

@Gamer79

How in the world are the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast not seen as failures? They both sold around 8M each, which is much lower than the ~30M that the Genesis had sold before it, and even the Master System before that. They were both the worst selling consoles in their respective generation (PS1, N64 outsold Saturn, PS2, GC, and Xbox outsold Dreamcast). Both of the consoles were incredibly short lived. The Saturn was discontinued in every territory but Japan after just three years. In Japan the console was discontinued after six years. Meanwhile the Dreamcast was discontinued worldwide in 2001 after launching in most territories in 1999 and in Japan in 1998. The failure of the Saturn and Dreamcast lead to Sega pulling out of the hardware market. Which, by the way, all of this occurred when Sega was massively dropping the price of their consoles quickly to compete. Sega was hemorrhaging money at this point.

None of this indicates a successful console. Saying the Saturn was a success because it did better in Japan is like saying the Vita is a success (they both sold around the same amount of units in Japan). Even the Wii U outsold these consoles worldwide.

Magog1589d ago

The picture should be the 360 RROD. When I think of gaming hardware failures that's what springs to mind. Kinect and it's bundled price tag definitely hobbled the already underpowered Xbox One though for sure so I would give it a close second place.

porkChop1589d ago (Edited 1589d ago )

That's not what the author means by failures. It's about hardware that failed in terms of sales (Wii U) or just failed to deliver on its promise (Kinect).

Magog1589d ago (Edited 1589d ago )

Given that the 360 had a year head start, much easier hardware to develop for, was cheaper, and still ended up in third place I think it qualifies especially when you factor in the frustration and huge losses incurred by RROD.

porkChop1588d ago

Selling over 80 million consoles isn't a sales flop. We get it, you don't like Xbox, but that doesn't mean the 360 is suddenly a failure.

Rhythmattic1588d ago

Porky....
You know how many people I know bought a 2nd or third 360 due to RROD? Even when MS had to confront the issue with replacement systems, my mates couldn't wait for even the turnaround of sending it in, and waiting for a replacement.,,..,..
If that's how you consider it a win... OK.. but so is having 5 , of which 3 don't function.... Its a win win....mwhahahahaha

porkChop1588d ago

"my mates couldn't wait for even the turnaround of sending it in"

You're acting like it would take months. When I sent my 360 in I got a new one literally 5 days later. As soon as MS had tracking confirmation that you sent yours, they'd send a new one to you the same day. No one is going to spend hundreds to buy a new console instead of waiting a week. I swear you guys pull some of the dumbest shit out of nowhere and think people will actually believe it.

Regardless, none of this changes the fact that this isn't what the article is even about.

Rhythmattic1587d ago (Edited 1587d ago )

Porky
"You're acting like it would take months"
Sometimes it could.. FFS.. 'Strya here...
Best turnaround I reckon was 2-3 weeks.....
Either way, My mates experiences still exist.. So Sorry, no point trying to earn Xbox Achievements when it doesn't feature in what was a situation you never dealt with,,,,
3 of my friends would disagree (overall, 10 extra Xboxes purchased)
Regardless.. MS sold a lot of 360's that was due to this reason.. That is sales. Fact

"none of this changes the fact that this isn't what the article is even about."
Headline says HELLO !
Oh and "Sadly, not all hardware is created equal," that's enough to pass this on without taking your article bias into consideration.....

Yup, and because of that big fiasco MS had to fork out 1 billion but knowing them I think they're very proud of the 360, it's the only time a MS console reached 80mil+ sales, RROD played a big part of that and a record they will never break again.

Rhythmattic1588d ago (Edited 1588d ago )

So true.. Even when MS accepted they where caught out in the biggest lie of any generation, The wait for a replacement was outweighed by just buying another, and having one be returned as a backup, which, btw, generally failed on first swap.
I own honestly can't believe MS tards are just supporting , or arguing why and what MS did by just dismissing it....

Lol I had the Atari Jaguar, surprised its "competition" the 3DO isn't on the list too, both as "popular" as each other.

lonewolf101589d ago

Agreed, I never actually saw a 3DO make it to retailers in the UK. At least the Atari Jaguar was sold for around 6 months.

lonewolf101588d ago

It made it to some my brother got one, fared just as well as the Jaguar so most probably hard to find in general.

darthv721588d ago

3do had way better games. Jaguar not so much. Neo Geo sold less than both and yet isnt considered a failure. Go figure.

LWOGaming1589d ago

Stadia is a weird one. It hasn’t sold at all well but in terms of how it works it’s still miles ahead of Xcloud in terms of stability and performance. Xcloud is still a way behind and that needs sorting but it will be in time. Stadia for me is one of those things that will go down as a what could have been moments. With better marketing it could have been a roaring success. I still play it and it remains the best place in my opinion to play CyberPunk 2077. Only platform I have played it on without having any issues at all. The tech is great. The concept is fine. Marketing terrible. Shame really.

Magog1588d ago

The sales model was awful. They should have teamed with an existing player to allow for local and cloud access to games or a gaming subscription service.

LWOGaming1588d ago

It was a strange mess from such a huge company, as I said, as a system it works really well but without gamers it’s nothing. Such a waste,

LWOGaming1589d ago

The Xbox One was Microsoft’s Nintendo Wii U. Undercooked, undersold and just an unholy mess. The thing is with any of these failures is to learn from them and thankfully both Nintendo and Xbox did just that to the benefit of gamers everywhere.

Pivotal Decisions in Gaming History - Xbox Goes All-In on Kinect

Xbox 360's Kinect had flopped yet Microsoft insisted on mandatory Kinect for Xbox One, driving the price up and alienating their potential customers.

techstomper.com
darthv721765d ago

the tech was pretty damn good but their focus on making it the centerpiece was not. Had they opted to keep it as a secondary or even tertiary device, it may have found new use for AR/VR.

PrimeVinister1765d ago

Maybe. But they were two early for VR and too late for motion control

1765d ago Replies(2)
Godmars2901765d ago

Their focus was marketing metrics. Information gathering for targeted advertising. Also "event curating" or head counting for special TV events. If MS had had their way with always online and mandatory Kinect pre COVID, as and during it they'd likely be turning into dominant presence in many Western homes. Be getting subsidized by Disney and other streamers as well as the NFL.

Thing was, Kinect as an actual game system, its games, just weren't ready. MS moved on it too soon. Thankfully.

Atticus_finch1765d ago

Sorry but it was incredibly bad for gaming. The thing barely worked as intended and the games were broken shovelware. And let's not forget all the lies from Xbox to try and sell it. What happened to Milo?

Kinect requirement, TV focused, DRM, and $100 buried Xbone before it even stared.

PrimeVinister1765d ago (Edited 1765d ago )

I think Kinect was the worst of the bunch. They reversed DRM overnight and try to play down the TV stuff when they realised it made them look disinterested in gaming.

Kinect stuck around for six months, preventing sales and making more and more people upset when they dropped the Kinect and the price.

Atticus_finch1765d ago

Don't forget the inferior hardware which affects their game development to this day.
And the constant boasting and lying that hasn't change very much to this day.

kayoss1765d ago

I was kind of excited for the kinect. It had potential. That was until i tried it at one of their Microsoft store. The thing was so laggy and worker who was there, had no clue what he was doing. It kind of made rethink about buying an Xbox One with Kinect.

PrimeVinister1765d ago

I had already been turned off of the idea by Kinect for 360. Even when it worked, the games were bad and showed no potential.

Wii made you understand what they were going to do with it within about 10 seconds of Wii Sports. It went on to become a bit of a joke but at least it worked and had a purpose.

Thundercat771765d ago

The damage to the Xbox brand was so hard that til this day they are just the last place brand in the market.

PrimeVinister1765d ago

Totally. They haven't been really all that relevant since.

Godmars2901765d ago

That has to do with repeatedly failing, having to reaffirm only to again fail at creating a competent flow of decent games.

@PrimeVinister:
Until Game Pass and BC are mentioned. Only for the point to be missed.

kayoss1765d ago

thats because they dont know what they want to be. A gaming console, Television, or a gaming service?

Godmars2901765d ago

@kayoss:
They wanted, expected, to be Steam. To have everyone coming to them and paying for the privilege. That's the exact mentality on display when they tried to push always online.

brewin1765d ago

Its sad because the Xbox one version of Kinect was actually pretty solid. Not for motion games, I couldnt care less about those, but for the other features that are now commonplace in the gaming ecosystem. Things like voice control and optional motion features in games. Stuff that Sony did with the PS camera was pretty sweet and they could have done some of that stuff with Kinect.

The tech was pretty sweet when implemented right though. Who remembers the implementation in Dead Rising 3?! You could lure zombies away by saying stuff into the kinect, it was a bit hokey at first, but it actually enhanced the game significantly once you learned all the different voice commands. There was and still is nothing else like that!

The focus on TV seemed to be an issue for people, but the TV pass through had some real potential. They could have had cable companies giving the XBone out instead of cable boxes! I understood what they were trying to do, but they needed to show the games too, and thats where they lost the core gamers. Being able to jump right to a sports event or TV show with out leaving the console was actually a pretty cool thing. I spent many nights switching between NHL games or TV shows and jumping right back into my games seamlessly, just by telling Kinect to do so. It was better than people care to admit, but I loved it!

People say XBone had no games, but on launch I got Dead Rising 3, AC Black Flag, Watch Dogs, Killer Instinct, Battlefield 4, Forza 5, and Ryse. That was actually a pretty solid lineup in hindsight! Then later on it got gems like Quantum Break, Dead Rising 4, Sunset Overdrive, Gears 4 and 5, the Ori games, Rare Replay, Forza Horizon 3/4, State of Decay 2, ReCore (SUPER UNDERRATED GEM), Halo 5, Halo Wars 2, and all the great 3rd party stuff as well! I dare anyone who sat on the Xbox One to go back and give it a shot now.

It was actually a pretty great console all things considered. Yes the PS4 had better 1st party stuff, stuff that MS just couldnt top or even compete with, but there are some really great games that a lot of people missed out on that they would probably really enjoy if they actually played them. Thats why I recommend a Series S and Gamepass to a lot of people, as its a great way to get an awesome lineup pf games for super cheap!
