Kinect Vs. Gran Turismo 5 Determines Second Place In Console War (RunDLC)

When Sony announced the November 24th U.S. launch date for Gran Turismo 5, the message was clear: it wants to dominate Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year. Most importantly, it plans to destroy Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and its recently released Kinect peripheral.

John Artest (RunDLC)

Zir05680d ago

GT5 is one game, it will sell well and boost hardware but only for about a week and then sales will become normal. Kinect will likely keep 360 sales high consistently throughout the rest of the generation.

ShinMaster5680d ago (Edited 5680d ago )

How does Kinect vs any game determine anything???

And why is Kinect in the same sentence as Gran Turismo?
Kinect is not even a game.

nix5680d ago

every soccer mom eed not buy GT5.

Longrod_Von_Hugendon5680d ago

So Kinect is all MS/360 has to go up against the might GT5? No actual games I see.

This is just beyond pathetic.

darthv725680d ago (Edited 5679d ago )

hey, I am a preferred 360 fan but even I wouldnt make a dumb assessment as that. The GT series has quite a following and has been known to be a true "system seller".

In a bizarro world it would be neat to see the mighty GT get passed up by kinect. Actually, I will be watching to see how it goes down. Many times people have said this game or that game will be the one to put PS3 on top (or closer to it).

This IS the game to do that and if it doesnt then....MS has something to really brag about at the game conferences.

edit: come to think of it, (hypothetically speaking) what if it did? Sony had spent all this time and $$ to ensure a quality title and yet it doesnt sell the system like many diehard's would like to believe.

GT5 will sell, no doubt about that.

Bigpappy5680d ago

But "Zir0" is right about Kinect selling More consoles than GT5. Just watch the numbers when they are released. You guys have been wrong on Kinect before it was release and are still here trying to down play its potential for M$. Those casual gamers, that you guys love to hate, do not own 360's yet.

renegade5680d ago

You think that the kinect will stay selling for ever like it selling right now, naah i not think soo ay be last 1 month or 2.

edgeofblade5680d ago

Maybe overselling Kinect a little... but certainly going to have a bigger impact than GT5. You may not like it, but that's probably how it's going to shake out.

Clarence5680d ago

You must be smoking. Most PS3 games sale well over time. GT5 will cause the PS3 console sales to boost for a least a month or two.

dirtydbz5679d ago

boy I love gt5 and I hate to say this but kinect may lose on black friday
but all in all I see it as moving more hardware than gt5 will
for the simple fact that bobby and his sister sue can play together while gt5
bobby isn't letting sue touch the dam controler ( ok parents which game are you getting for your family)
then it will boil down to return on investment if knuckelheads will pay $60 for shovelware on kinect for games that may cost 1-2 million to develop and they sell 1/10th the amount of games that gran turismo sells the game would still make a better return on investment
I for one am not happy about that possibility but it very well could happen

TheDCD5680d ago

It'll be a tough race, for sure.

SmokexFFx5680d ago

Never underestimate the power of casual gamers. Kinect will own Black Friday and every other day this holiday.

frostypants5680d ago

Not if MS doesn't market it better. For spending $500 million, their TV advertising sure is pretty awful and the average consumer STILL has no idea what Kinect is.

Biggest5679d ago

How will Kinect at full retail price do anything during Black Friday? Are you having trouble understanding what Black Friday is about?

edgeofblade5680d ago (Edited 5680d ago )

What's with the disagrees for SmokexFFx? This is pretty much a fact. We gamers buy games year round. The casuals and the kiddies who don't make any money... they do almost all their buying at Christmas...

Kinect will PROBABLY wipe the floor with GT5. In fact, I don't see a lot of hype driving for PS3 adoption through the end of the year. Face it, if you want a PS3 for this holiday's lineup, you probably already have one.

@frosty: Look where they spent that $500 million... Oprah, The View, Ellen... mothers who do the Christmas shopping. Your opinion of Microsoft's ads is completely useless. What really matters is how the money gets laid down.

JonnyBigBoss5680d ago

I'll take the ultimate driving experience at $60 over a $150 casual peripheral that requires enormous amounts of space any day, any year.

SmokexFFx5680d ago

It;s not the "ultimate driving experience" without the ultimate driving wheel!

http://www.amazon.com/Logit...

$189.98 please.

vangl765680d ago

I picked this up earlier this week when amazon had it for $99. That plus I will be getting back $30 from the logitech rebate. Can't beat a wheel like that at 69.99

number475680d ago

Kinects Casual experience, like Netflix/Zune/Hulu require online.

$209.00 please.

frostypants5680d ago

What do you mount the wheel to? I do want one but I don't want to be hunched over a coffee table, and I don't want to have to build some silly contraption just to use it.

A buddy of mine has a wheel for his 360 and I swear I get back aches from using it.

SmokexFFx5680d ago (Edited 5680d ago )

@number47

Is that the best you can think of? Really, who buys Kinect with the soul use of Netflix/Zune/Hulu in mind? People who buy Kinect want the motion gaming part.

@vangl76

Lucky you. Nice price.

fierysensation5680d ago

@frostypants:

I got something like this: http://www.pondsolutions.co...

and mounted the wheel to it. I put the folding table under a heavier table that was taller and put my HD LCD monitor on the Heavier table. I put the shifter on an arm of a heavy chair and use another chair to sit. Kinda improvised.

Did Sony pay you for that comment, jieack? If not, you should realize just how ridiculous that sounds.... like a car commercial.

redsquad5680d ago

Nah, I suspect he just employed 'common sense', and it told him that a well-constructed driving sim will be of far more value and lasting appeal than a new games controller (which, despite all the fawning hype, is ALL Kinect is)

Fishy Fingers5680d ago (Edited 5680d ago )

Another awesome RunDLC opinion piece. So bizarre are they that they have a disclaimer on their own articles.

PlayStation 3: chasing the 1080p dream, part three - Gran Turismo 5 and the indie explosion

From Digital Foundry: "Welcome to the third part in the biggest DF Retro episode we've ever produced - a year-by-year look at how 1080p gaming fared on the PlayStation 3. Launched in 2007 touting its then-exclusive HDMI digital interface, Sony layered full HD gaming on top of its Cell processor and RSX 'Reality Synthesizer' as key selling points for its third generation console. Of course, we all know how that turned out - both Sony and Microsoft machines routinely ran the most advanced titles at sub-720p resolutions, often with questionable performance, so what happened to the 1080p dream?

In the first two parts of John Linneman's investigation, we've covered off the first four years of the Triple's lifecycle and moving into 2010, the overall fortunes of the PlayStation 3 continued to improve. The platform holder released - what was then - the most advanced motion controller in the console space, backed up by experiments with stereoscopic 3D, which turned out to be a short-lived but still formidable pairing. Combined with a strong E3 showing, PS3 was looking good.

However, it's fair to say that it was a fallow year for 1080p gaming on the system, with only Scott Pilgrim Saves The World's razor-sharp pixel art upscaling, Castle Crashers and Soldner X2's 3D/FMV stylings accommodating full HD output - alongside a wonderful Monkey Island remaster."

Just remember ladies and gentlemen, Sony never said all games would be 1080p. Only that the system would support games up to 1080p in a survey before the system was released.
https://spong.com/article/9...
And as we saw, some games did support it, some games tried their best to support it and some games didn't or never reached it.

Is a higher resolution great to have if you can do it? Sure. Is it necessary for a fun game? No

But what I find interesting is Eurogamer. Are they really talking about HD and PS3 in their article or are they really pushing their 4.50 Euros 4K video download subscription? Seems one is being used to sell the other. Just look at the bottom of the article.

Michiel19891406d ago

thats what every company tries to do, push for people to buy their products. Are you really gonna blame them for that?

ApocalypseShadow1406d ago

Not all articles are about selling. They're about informing or entertaining.

Maybe I'm supposed to watch the video instead of reading. But I shouldn't have to click. But the article lazily tells us some games did hit 1080p and some didn't. I didn't learn anything new as I own the console. Then, they push a Patreon subscription.

Are you saying every opinion, preview, review and rant article requires a push to buy something now? Tell me which sites are prone to do so so that I can avoid them in the future.

Michiel19891406d ago

not everyone played during the ps3 era. I started during snes era but loved seeing articles/videos about how gaming evolved before that.

i dont think this article is trying to push you to get that patreon sub, it doesnt for me at least. I dont think theres anything wrong putting an ad at the bottom of the article. all the regular DF videos are free already.

SonyStyled1406d ago

Wipeout HD on PS3, a remake of the PS1 game was 1080p 60fps. And that released in 2007-08

Christopher1406d ago

This really feels like a filler article. I don't feel like I learned anything notable or substantial from this. I feel they could have reduced the unnecessary intro and over-explanation of things and put the whole series in one article for a more substantial and possibly informative piece rather than piece-mealing it out as they have.

dumahim1406d ago

It's more about the video. DF Retro videos are for Patreon members first, and I think the whole thing was one big video. For the youtube channel, it gets chopped up and released weekly.

ApocalypseShadow1406d ago

Chris is actually right on this one. Something known already was just kind of washed over in the article. Unless you're supposed to get more in the video. If more is in the video, then more could have been said in the article.

Only thing I learned new was that they are selling a subscription. My point though is that you gain more viewers by having better articles and content.

Knightofelemia1591d ago

I would label the Power Glove, Kinect, and that Tony Hawk skateboard more as hardware addons hardware failure would be like the Virtual Boy and one day Stadia.

Magog1591d ago

Kinect was bundled with every Xbox One and inflated the price on an already underpowered and low RAM machine so for the One it wasn't an accessory as much as a white elephant.

CaptainHenry9161591d ago (Edited 1591d ago )

Definitely the RROD but that power glove had a lot of issues as well. The Kinect just didn't work

1591d ago
CrimsonWing691591d ago

Hardware add-ons are more like RAM or a video card, basically components that enhance capabilities or performance of the computer.

If you really want to get technical the Kinect is more of a peripheral device, kind of like a keyboard or mouse to a computer.

ThatsGaming1591d ago

The person in this article obviously is not up on their gaming history....

Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Coleco Gemini, Commodore 128, Commodore Amiga, Atari 5200, Atari 7800 were all massive failures and in most cases cost their companies participating in future gaming generations.

Gamer791590d ago

Sega saturn (successful in Japan) and dreamcast were not failures.
Seems like you're not up on you're gaming history

septemberindecember1590d ago

@Gamer79

How in the world are the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast not seen as failures? They both sold around 8M each, which is much lower than the ~30M that the Genesis had sold before it, and even the Master System before that. They were both the worst selling consoles in their respective generation (PS1, N64 outsold Saturn, PS2, GC, and Xbox outsold Dreamcast). Both of the consoles were incredibly short lived. The Saturn was discontinued in every territory but Japan after just three years. In Japan the console was discontinued after six years. Meanwhile the Dreamcast was discontinued worldwide in 2001 after launching in most territories in 1999 and in Japan in 1998. The failure of the Saturn and Dreamcast lead to Sega pulling out of the hardware market. Which, by the way, all of this occurred when Sega was massively dropping the price of their consoles quickly to compete. Sega was hemorrhaging money at this point.

None of this indicates a successful console. Saying the Saturn was a success because it did better in Japan is like saying the Vita is a success (they both sold around the same amount of units in Japan). Even the Wii U outsold these consoles worldwide.

Magog1591d ago

The picture should be the 360 RROD. When I think of gaming hardware failures that's what springs to mind. Kinect and it's bundled price tag definitely hobbled the already underpowered Xbox One though for sure so I would give it a close second place.

porkChop1591d ago (Edited 1591d ago )

That's not what the author means by failures. It's about hardware that failed in terms of sales (Wii U) or just failed to deliver on its promise (Kinect).

Magog1591d ago (Edited 1591d ago )

Given that the 360 had a year head start, much easier hardware to develop for, was cheaper, and still ended up in third place I think it qualifies especially when you factor in the frustration and huge losses incurred by RROD.

porkChop1590d ago

Selling over 80 million consoles isn't a sales flop. We get it, you don't like Xbox, but that doesn't mean the 360 is suddenly a failure.

Rhythmattic1590d ago

Porky....
You know how many people I know bought a 2nd or third 360 due to RROD? Even when MS had to confront the issue with replacement systems, my mates couldn't wait for even the turnaround of sending it in, and waiting for a replacement.,,..,..
If that's how you consider it a win... OK.. but so is having 5 , of which 3 don't function.... Its a win win....mwhahahahaha

porkChop1590d ago

"my mates couldn't wait for even the turnaround of sending it in"

You're acting like it would take months. When I sent my 360 in I got a new one literally 5 days later. As soon as MS had tracking confirmation that you sent yours, they'd send a new one to you the same day. No one is going to spend hundreds to buy a new console instead of waiting a week. I swear you guys pull some of the dumbest shit out of nowhere and think people will actually believe it.

Regardless, none of this changes the fact that this isn't what the article is even about.

Rhythmattic1589d ago (Edited 1589d ago )

Porky
"You're acting like it would take months"
Sometimes it could.. FFS.. 'Strya here...
Best turnaround I reckon was 2-3 weeks.....
Either way, My mates experiences still exist.. So Sorry, no point trying to earn Xbox Achievements when it doesn't feature in what was a situation you never dealt with,,,,
3 of my friends would disagree (overall, 10 extra Xboxes purchased)
Regardless.. MS sold a lot of 360's that was due to this reason.. That is sales. Fact

"none of this changes the fact that this isn't what the article is even about."
Headline says HELLO !
Oh and "Sadly, not all hardware is created equal," that's enough to pass this on without taking your article bias into consideration.....
As for the rest.... Ok.. But you've actually gone out of your way to give MS a Pass... Fap on.

Aloymetal1591d ago (Edited 1591d ago )

Yup, and because of that big fiasco MS had to fork out 1 billion but knowing them I think they're very proud of the 360, it's the only time a MS console reached 80mil+ sales, RROD played a big part of that and a record they will never break again.

Rhythmattic1590d ago (Edited 1590d ago )

So true.. Even when MS accepted they where caught out in the biggest lie of any generation, The wait for a replacement was outweighed by just buying another, and having one be returned as a backup, which, btw, generally failed on first swap.
I own honestly can't believe MS tards are just supporting , or arguing why and what MS did by just dismissing it....

lonewolf101591d ago

Lol I had the Atari Jaguar, surprised its "competition" the 3DO isn't on the list too, both as "popular" as each other.

SullysCigar1591d ago

Lol same. Played the crap out of Aliens Vs Predator and Tempest 2000 .... aaand that's about it really!!

lonewolf101591d ago

Sad but true that was pretty much it.

Kurt Russell1591d ago

Agreed, I never actually saw a 3DO make it to retailers in the UK. At least the Atari Jaguar was sold for around 6 months.

lonewolf101590d ago

It made it to some my brother got one, fared just as well as the Jaguar so most probably hard to find in general.

darthv721591d ago

3do had way better games. Jaguar not so much. Neo Geo sold less than both and yet isnt considered a failure. Go figure.

LWOGaming1591d ago

Stadia is a weird one. It hasn’t sold at all well but in terms of how it works it’s still miles ahead of Xcloud in terms of stability and performance. Xcloud is still a way behind and that needs sorting but it will be in time. Stadia for me is one of those things that will go down as a what could have been moments. With better marketing it could have been a roaring success. I still play it and it remains the best place in my opinion to play CyberPunk 2077. Only platform I have played it on without having any issues at all. The tech is great. The concept is fine. Marketing terrible. Shame really.

Magog1591d ago

The sales model was awful. They should have teamed with an existing player to allow for local and cloud access to games or a gaming subscription service.

LWOGaming1591d ago

It was a strange mess from such a huge company, as I said, as a system it works really well but without gamers it’s nothing. Such a waste,

LWOGaming1591d ago

The Xbox One was Microsoft’s Nintendo Wii U. Undercooked, undersold and just an unholy mess. The thing is with any of these failures is to learn from them and thankfully both Nintendo and Xbox did just that to the benefit of gamers everywhere.
