PlayStation Network Surpasses 60 Million Users

The PlayStation Network allows us to play online, download expansion packs, and even full games on our PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. With an “industry leading” connectivity rate for the PS3 it is no wonder that the PSN has grown from strength to strength, quickly surpassing user figures of other major gaming networks, including Xbox Live. Now, Sony has revealed that the network has passed a staggering 60 million users.

That is a hell of a lotta users.

Dramscus5710d ago

I believe it's a few million more than there are ps3's sold.

Red_Orange_Juice5710d ago (Edited 5710d ago )

PS3 is not the only place you can create an account. Plus I doubt the number is overestimated, most people don't create multiple accounts, they may have no idea you can even do it. Only us gamers who spend time on forums, know what's up.
If someone said 1M is duplicate accounts, I'd say it's less.

@OSU_Gamer , but I can be totally wrong :)

@OSU_Gamer 2, yes they're gamers who know what's up not regulars :)

btw. I have 3

OSU_Gamer5710d ago (Edited 5710d ago )

@Red_Orange

I dont have any proof, just like you, but i would think you were way off.

IMO there are a huge amount of multipla duplicate PSN accounts

Edit:

You can also look down at all the comments of people who have 5-10 accounts.

The Wood5710d ago (Edited 5710d ago )

but you can really only purchase off one. I have hong kong US and japan on top of my Uk/Europe but i can only purchase off the European psn store. Also the fact that anybody else in any given household doeesnt have to PAY for another account means there could be 2, 3 even 4 or more members on separate game buying psn accounts on the same machine *inhales*

@Redempteur

are they all the same region, If so then thats a scenario i forgot to mention. I also think you can buy psn cards for other regions online and make purchases using those

Redempteur5710d ago

i have 3 accounts and i purchase from 3 of them...
and i'm active on 2 of them( trophy AND HOME )

AntoineDcoolette5710d ago

Dramscus, I've made at least 7 PSN accounts.

Megaton5710d ago

I've made 6 accounts total.

dabri55710d ago

I have at least 5 of those on my PS3. One for me, my wife, her brother, my brother, and her sister. Oh and a Japanese account for me to get some Japanese titles.

Hideo_Kojima5710d ago

over 60 million PSPs sold...
over 40 million PS3s sold...
over 140 million PS2s sold...

Sure a lot of people have bought many of the 3 so there is an overlap in sales but 60 million PSN accounts sound very realistic.

In the last 10 years Sony has sold 240 million consoles :P

FrankDrebin5710d ago

Each PS3 owner has 3, 4, 5, accounts each. You need to divide the number by 3, 4. Then it isn't that impressive. Just keeping it real.

Parapraxis5710d ago (Edited 5710d ago )

Yeah, real STUPID. The average user only has 1 account.
REGULAR USERS SIGN UP ONCE.
They don't know there is content available on other PSN stores or even that there are other PSN stores.

Only an idiot would think the majority has multiple accounts.

NBT915710d ago

60 million divided by 3 is 20 million... Nope still impressive numbers to me :)

Non_sequitur5710d ago

You can have a PSN account for your PSP even if you don't own a PS3. You can also create a PSN account if you have neither a PS3 or PSP.

zeddy5710d ago (Edited 5710d ago )

i have 4 myself, i hope sony are counting accounts where money has been spent.

Sam Fisher5710d ago

im a psn+ customer, and i cant stop buying stuff on the psn, most of the good stuff are in discounts. i used to be for micro, but F*** that.

SmokexFFx5710d ago

I account for about 10 of them. lol.

Longrod_Von_Hugendon5710d ago (Edited 5710d ago )

I have 2 and use them all the time.

SeNiLe9115710d ago (Edited 5710d ago )

...

Edit: I guess I don't use it rarely either from the Disagree. LOL

PS3ROCKS5710d ago

About 10 also. I got like 5 xbox account to

Balt 5710d ago

How many alternate accounts and or active accounts does this count? Also, with this many users I think Sony should reward everyone with a free game or Home Space. Something.

Sev5710d ago

That's a good point. I have like 5-6 accounts myself.

electricshadow5710d ago

I have three. Canada/US (if there's any difference?), Europe and Japan one. Comes in handy.

Parapraxis5710d ago

There actually IS a difference between Canada and US, very RARELY does it matter, but I got Rag Doll Kung Fu from the US PSN store and couldn't get it in Canada ;)
lol
I as well have a UK account, for purchasing Singstar songs, and a JP for demos.

electricshadow5710d ago

That's what I thought. I wasn't 100% sure. I'm assuming the Movie Store in the U.S. has a lot more movies to choose from than the Canadian one. Just like Netflix.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8562d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele62d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk61d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay61d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10162d ago (Edited 62d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit61d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg61d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10161d ago (Edited 61d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14962d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle75d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit75d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog75d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog75d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad75d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_75d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage75d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda75d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
