Is PC Gaming Going Under ?

It has been said that the PC gaming scene has been suffering for some time ever since consoles "took over". This is my opinion on this topic, explaining reasons why PC gamers should NOT be worried. Better times are coming.

I was a console only gamer for over twenty years until I bought my first gaming rig this year and so far I love PC gaming. After playing games like Crysis on full settings and some multi plats that look far better then the console version. I'll finally admit consoles have nothing on a high end PC. I have noticed since I got a PC its like it used to be where the PC used to to have some awesome exclusives that aren't on consoles, it seems now that I have one all the games I want to play I could play on a console. That is with the exception of RTS and MMO's.

I don't think PC gaming is dying, but its not doing anything to make itself stand apart from console gaming at the moment like it used to.

No fucking shit it's going to be X58.. that's the i7 platform. That is not a 'feature'. Neither is unlocked BIOS, whatever the hell that means. You can access your BIOS any time you want. It is in no way shape or form locked in a way that you cannot access it on your own.

6GB of 1067MHz isn't that great, when 1333MHz and 1600MHz 6GB sets can be found for $100.

2x 5770s will suck. You can get a 460 and probably get better performance from that than 2 5770s. They really are shit tier cards especially with AMD's faulty drivers.

Fuck liquid cooling, i7s will hit 4.0 on air with a $30 budget cooler.

There are more parts to a computer than just CPU GPU and RAM, I think the most important part is the PSU. What good is your computer if you don't have good clean power? Prebuilts will have a generic no name brand and with the Aurora ALX, Alienware doesn't even specify the PSU brand, wattage, 80+ rating. The fastest way to kill your computer is to have a shitty PSU. I learned that the hard way.

And what about the motherboard? That determines how high your OC will go. Not all mobos are made equally. Stability, layout, upgrade path. I'd take a crappy looking rainbow colored board with perfect layout over a hardcore matching color scheme "gamer" motherboard with shitty layout. Airflow is important, and so is cable management and power connector positions.

So yes, Alienware is overpriced garbage. It is far cheaper and definitely more rewarding to build something with your own two hands and maybe a friend to help, lol. It's a great learning experience and that's what makes the PC different than consoles.

Jesus Christ, that's TERRIBLE for that price. I could 2x SLI GTX 460s, have a nice CM HAF 932/Antec 1200 tower, get a good sound card, get a motherboard that supports USB 3.0, and even then it wouldn't cost that much.

If you don't have the know how to buy and assemble the components then any independent computer store will be happy to assemble a rig for you. And liquid cooled overclocked rigs are easier ti achieve than ever.

Actual hardcore PC gaming. There seems to be a large uprising in PC gaming.
but it has a long way to go; like it or not console gameing took over along time ago and hasn't looked back.

Is PC gaming dying? Nope.

pc gaming won't die, instead it will continue to exist in an equilibrium with console gaming. Some console gamers will who want more out of their games will convert to pc gamers, while some pc gamers will be tempted by the simplicity of console gaming.

I myself messed around with pc for a bit but I now game exclusively on my ps3. I love the ease of use and the simple fun it offers. I can spend more time gaming instead of thinking how to tinker with my hardware or software to get the best out of my setup.

So yea pc gaming won't die, but as consoles get better it will become more niche for the most dedicated.

Looking at the headline, I thought "Oh joy. Another 'PC is dying' bullcrap". But now I see that it's quite different, and I like it.

Anyway, yes, better times are coming for PC gamers. And I believe 2011/2012 will be quite revolutionary for the platform.

I too believe PC will always prevail no matter what happens.
I had another thing to put into the article regarding Windows 8, and its simplicity and how it will sort of constrain users from having such freedom.But I believe even then, PC still will be the choice for gaming for many.

no- the pc is not going to die.

im an avid console player and i can tell you this- if it comes out on PC then its best on PC

i play ps3 for exclusives and jappy games, xbox for exclusives, wii for nintendo games and pc for multiplatforms

edit: i forgot to mention that PC is also THE place to play online you can argue paid for live vs free psn all day but ultimatly pc has the best online and its free

Agree with a lot there, mate, but not the online part.m I don't like npaying folr Live(anfd no longer do) but leraving thast aside I still prefer online gaming on consolkes. Sure there could be a hellk of a lot more dedicated servers on consoles but, for me, that's where the superiority of PC online begins and ends as far as game playing goes. Why? Because there's just too many pklayer controlled variables on PC to make the online experience a fair one. Console mods can be used to your advantage, cheating/hacking is even more widespread and frustrating and, and this is what broke it for me after primarily playing shooters on PC all my life, some of us aren';t that bothered about the ultimate performance of K/M controls and to me they actually detractc from some PC games.

To me they're almost too quick and as a result take me out of the game a little more than a pad. Sure, I'm better with K/M but to the pooint where it's so daftly quick and easy to pop off headies that it's silly to me. Also it gave rise to me constantly looking for the best and newest gaming mouse/keyboard set ups to get a little edge and I realised that my tech and kit had as much, and more, to do with I was doing than my skills did, I found console gaming was just a lot FAIRER and a more level playing field for people. Yes, there's always cheats but it's just built inot the choice we demand as PC gamers for there to be more of that(painting out backgrounds and so on and other tricks people use to make oppo more visible etc.

Natuarally I accept the likes of the knowledgeable Pandamobile feel differently but I'd hope they'd accept that my view is equally valid and even having said what I have I still play all my RTS on PC and a good deal of the multis that land there too(and exclusives, natch). PC is best, top end, for visuals and physics, no doubt, and for some game types a keyboard is a must but there's plenty to be said for gaming on everything from the PSP through to the best rig you can build as fr as gaming goes. Why can't I love GoS as much as SC2 ~FFS?!

Also, there's no RIGHT control method for FPS imo as for me mouse/key is no longer as immersive and seems too quick a lot of the time for my liking even though some demand that precision. Horses for courses and no platform is dying atm. Long live gaming. Good to see MS allowing PC gamers those series we'd thought lost to the 360 again, though, and hopefully Gears3 will follow Fable3.

youve got a pretty good point tbf with different gaming mice and keyboards out there

and i guess with kills being so quick so the seasoned pc gamer it increases the barrior for new players not so good players to join

also totally agree on platforms having great experiences, ive been building a console collection for that very reason,so far got megadrive thru > current high end pc with just an n64 and xbox to go (im such a nerd lol)

Steam has just about every PC game of the last 8 years available for download, and Microsoft is starting essentially from square one, aka where Steam was back in 2003.

Pretty stiff?? Did you not see the Steam Store just a few days ago? There were sales going left and right. Mid week sales, Weekend sales, Tuesday sales, holiday sales. You can't swing a dead cat and not hit a sale. There are ALWAYS things on sale, a lot of the time they're from big companies too like Capcom and EA. Most of the time though they're from indie developers and those games are awesome too.

I'm just wondering if pc gaming died then what. I mean consoles are based off pc hardware, games are built with it. If those companies went under then consoles would have to start making their own graphic chips and rams etc... which would be too expensive, in a way pc's are what makes gaming live on any platform.

PC gaming is always able to reinvent itself and adjust to the market, as it's the most resource-friendly environment for developers.

Just look at the recent success of Farmville, Minecraft and other one man projects. There will always be something new that people will be excited about.

The average gamer doesn't want the hassle of upgrades searching for patches etc etc console have gotten to a level where the graphics match pc games. A £300 console can last 10 years or more, before its obsolete. Which is not true of pc gaming, if you wait 10 years before an upgrade you'd miss put on a plethora of games as your pc simply wasn't powerful enough for the mainstream games. There are many pros and cons for both sides and i won't delve into to them as i'm sure you already know them. Btw games consoles wont ever have epgradable gfx or rams but will have upgradable hdds for obvious reasons

There is no way consoles are getting upgradable parts. Reason being PC is used in many ways, not just gaming. When parts such as:

CPUs, RAM, Motherboards ETC are used by 100's of million of people around the world. This helps absorb the cost of development for new tech.

If such parts would be developed for consoles they would have to be specifically for that console, hence the user base would be very small in comparison. it wouldnt even justify the development costs. Note how Microsoft and Sony already take a hit on hardware. Now imagine if they had to constantly develop new hardware.

A PC that runs multiplatform titles now will still run the multiplatform titles that come out in 3 years. Why wouldn't it? They are all coded for the same static console hardware.

Just look at the system requirements. They have barely changed over the last 4 years. even though processing power has *quadrupled* according to Moore's Law.

I had to jump in here. This is one of the usual retorts regarding PC gaming... "you need to upgrade all the time to play new games" or some such rhetoric. But here's the deal, the latest games DO NOT require newer graphics cards (or other upgrades) at all, anyone who tells you otherwise is either trying to sell you something or is (to put it very nicely) "misinformed".

Perfect example of why this is true and I'm not just spouting BS like too many people, I just built a new crazy powerful system. Before I got that built I was playing on a system which is 6 years old and I was playing the latest games on it. In fact I completed the campaign mode in Starcraft 2 (on high settings) perfectly fine. Yeah I can totally max out the settings now on my new system, but my 6 year old system ran it perfectly fine also.

So there you have it, yet again, for those who missed it the 300,000 times before, PCs DO NOT need to be upgraded all the time in order to play the latest games. It's a myth, always has been, always will be.

I don't really play many games on my PC anymore prefering the plug and play ease of my PS3.

But I hope (and think) that PC gaming will continue to do well as it has a large install base and has certain game types that you just don't get on console.

The truth is all the platforms have their strengths and weaknesses and depending on the person they are all good.

I hope there continues to be the choice and competition between at least 3 games platforms, as that can only be good news for us the consumer as it almost guarantee's continual improvement in all area's as they try to outdo each other. And it also helps prices from sky-rocketing!

So whatever your favorite platform is... try just enjoying your gaming on it and realise that the "other" platforms doing well ensure that your platform will continue to improve to compete!

No way, PC gaming is far more advanced than console gaming. Technological as well as distribution-wise.

Steam is everything PSN and XBL try and will be in a few years. Of course with console goggles on you only see decreasing sales of physical media on PC, which is the wrong and outdated approach of judging things.

If you judge the state of PC gaming, make sure you're view is adjusted to the future, with a dusty, conservative mindset it won't work.

They are even planning to update Games for Windows Live on NOV 15. The PC will live forever! Nothing can be done with out it and everything can be emulated with it.

edit:look, I'm sorry if you don't like it but the PC has been a multiplat-only machine for a good few years now, that's certainly all that my Asus G73JH and. Lack of decent exclusives are the cause of this.

@ below: None are goty quality from major sites tbh :/ and I thought that was pretty obvious, pointing to MW2 and others winning 1 or 2 gotys last year

We need PC gaming to strive. It's where we can still have some sense of freedom and versatility. It's good to see companies like Valve/Steam take a lead role and do well with providing PC gamers a good alternative to some sort of structure and still be very affordable and best of all serviceable that actually runs well. I dont want that role diminished by the likes of Microsoft or Apple.

When I saw the title of the article I wasn't going to read it since we have PC gaming is dying articles twice a week, 3 on a bad news week. But I took a look and was surprised by the content, even though some of what the guy said is a little off the main point is that PC gaming is being perceived as "making a come back". It didn't go anywhere in the first place, but hey certain people believe it did.

Anyway the article just proves what we've been saying all along. Each time a new generation of consoles comes out we get a flood of PC gaming is dying articles, around the halfway point of the generations lifespan we start to see a shift in the articles. All those naysayers proclaiming PC gaming is dying are suddenly saying there's a change and PC gaming is making a come back. In a year or two it'll be "PC gaming IS back" and so on. Then the big 3 will release the next generation of consoles and guess what ... PC gaming will be dying all over again.

PC gaming will never die, everyone just focuses on the "new toy" that came out. When they get bored of it, guess what they do, they return to old faithful.
