Bleszinski: Next-gen will be about 'connected experience'

CVG: "Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski took some time out of his busy schedule recently to chat to the BBC about Gears of War and a host of other gaming subjects.

Among the topics covered in a half hour interview was the evolution of gaming. Asked where he thinks the medium is headed, he said: "I think it's going to a connected world, honestly."

hahaha! cliffyb your gears multiplayer mode is broken that's why your games next gen will be 'connected experience'.

T9X695671d ago

It's not broken, I can play it just fine....

AAACE55671d ago

Gears multiplayer has it's issues just like any other game, but I wouldn't say broken! If that's the case, you might as well say Halo, Killzone, Call of Duty, etc. are broken! I have found several issues with all multiplayer games. None of them are perfect. The thing is, we force ourselves to deal with them because we want to like the game!

I used to think that Rainbow 6 Vegas was the best multiplayer game ever created! After playing more games, I went back and realized the game had tons of issues and couldn't believe I used to have fun with it! But at the time of it's release, it seemed like a great game.

We all like shitty games even if we don't realize they are shitty games yet! We hold on to a game because it's an exclusive or whatever, not realizing we just bought into the hype!

For instance, I gave up on Halo a while ago and was hoping that Reach would get me back into it. But sadly it hasn't! I am looking to off load it on someone as a trade for CoD Black ops or NFS Hot pursuit when they come out!

Also, when I got a Ps3, I wanted to get Killzone 2 so bad because of how everyone on here raved about it! When I finally got it, I was bored with the story after 2 hours and after 5 minutes in the multiplayer I realized I kept daydreaming about playing something else because I was bored with that! Seeing how there are less than a couple hundred people still playing it, I guess i'm not the only one who realized that as well.

Point is, don't give these games more credit than they are worth.

Cyrus3655671d ago

So the next Gen, will be Facebook type interactivity, with next gen graphics? Hopefully it doesn't go all social though.

BYE5671d ago

He didn't say anything about graphics.

Christopher5671d ago (Edited 5671d ago )

As a Software Developer, this is the same BS lingo I've been hearing about software and video games for over five years. It's kind of a 'no duh' statement to make in this day and age, IMHO. If you're trying to make this statement as if it's some new revelation as to the direction our entertainment is going in general, you're way behind the times.

kaveti66165671d ago

as a software user, this is the same thing that people have been saying for years, but some developers have been dragging their feet. Next generation, almost every game you can think of will have some type of online connectivity and interactivity. That's what Cliffy B is trying to say.

No more single player only campaigns. Online interaction is going to be a standard in everything,

Christopher5671d ago

***No more single player only campaigns.***

That's not true. Single-player campaigns still are a mainstay of the gaming world.

kaveti66165671d ago

i said no more single-player only. I mean that every game will have a multiplayer mode.

Christopher5671d ago (Edited 5671d ago )

Again, kaveti6616, that's just not going to happen. Just look at the majority of games released in the last 3 months, they're mostly single player games w/o multiplayer elements. The most played titles will more than likely have multiplayer elements, but the majority of games developed don't.

gamingdroid5671d ago (Edited 5671d ago )

... and we see how well the single player only games have done sales wise!

I believe Vanquish can be gotten for $35 right now, a mere two weeks or so after release. That is like what, a record?

I love single player games, and play them the most, but frankly people aren't buying them. It is a dying breed.

Christopher5671d ago (Edited 5671d ago )

***... and we see how well the single player only games have done sales wise! ***

MGS4
FFXIII
AC 1 & 2
GOW3
Fallout 3
Fallout New Vegas
Batman: Arkham Asylum
inFamous
SW Force Unleashed
Heavy Rain
DMC4
Lego Games
Mass Effect 1 & 2
Majority of games on the Wii

As I said, I'm not saying that quality multiplayer games don't tend to sell more, but there's no denying the strength in sales behind games that don't offer multiplayer gaming options. And, even then, I wouldn't be shocked to find that most games that don't fit the traditional FPS model and offer multiplayer modes find it uncommon that people play them online with others (GTA4, RDR, etc.) compared to those who just play the single player versions of the game.

This whole "every game will have multiplayer" spiel is one spread by those who play a lot of games online with others. Your typical FPS gamers. These people do not represent the greater group of gamers out there.

gamingdroid5671d ago (Edited 5671d ago )

... and out of that list which one has actually sold more than let say KZ2 that is lower on the totem pole when it comes to sales on a single platform to be fair.

Games sales are heavily favoring multi-player games.

"This whole "every game will have multiplayer" spiel is one spread by those who play a lot of games online with others. Your typical FPS gamers. These people do not represent the greater group of gamers out there."

No, it is the trend that has been showing through game sales, game development/features and developer talks.

I love single player games, but the games are gonna be more and more connected. Imagine playing a single player game and suddenly have a human opponent instead as the boss? There are so many opportunities that this area will definitely be the next area to innovate in.

Single player has been around for many decades now and multi-player in a social manner is relatively new and people buy them. Even when playing casual games, they focus on social interaction!

MGS4
FFXIII
AC 1 & 2
Uncharted
God of War
Lego: Indiana Jones
Oblivion
Fallout 3
Kung Fu Panda
Lego: Batman
BioShock (yes, the 2nd went multiplayer, but also performed worse)

Again, tons of titles on the Wii at ridiculous numbers.

***There are so many opportunities that this area will definitely be the next area to innovate in.***

On a case-by-case basis, perhaps. But, not as a defining element to the gaming genre. Companies that continue to dominate in multiplayer games will continue to add them as needed, but they still won't be the primary selling point for the mass majority of their games.

Look at games like AC 1 & 2, games that sold very well based on single player and a multiplayer option being created for one purpose only, to increase the number of players that would be interested in the games.

This isn't a sign that multiplayer is the future, it's a sign of Ubisoft attempting to attract a larger audience by adding more possibilities to the game. Something they are doing with the AC IP because it has sold well and it's worth the investment. It has nothing to do with getting players connected, it just has to do with increasing the market appeal of their game.

Most games cannot make that same argument and will maintain their single player status without expanding into a market that would see them lose more money to development for little, if any, market share growth.

One thing is consistent in all things business, there is no single rule to follow. This holds very true to the idea that 'connecting' gamers is the future. It's an option only, but not something that will become the norm.

gamingdroid5671d ago

I strongly believe that every game will eventually be connected in some way. That is where the market has been shifting to and it will become the norm.

Games like AC can have and probably will be connected in some way.

The Wii is an exception that I believe will change as well. It just so happens that the Wii has a feature nobody else has matched until now.

So Cliffy B, since you are an oracle and everything, give me the winning lotto numbers.

Seriously, predictions were made about THIS gen too, and look how that turned out. Wii took everything by storm and now everything is about motion control. So yeah, don't expect me to believe you.

soundslike5671d ago

what he basically did is take the idea of "web 2.0" and it apply it to gaming.

GAME 2.0

"Its not in the game, its in the number."

Gears Of War Creator Is "Thrilled" That The Franchise Isn't Xbox Exclusive Anymore

Gears of War creator Cliff 'CliffyB' Bleszinski is "thrilled" more people will be able to experience the original game when it arrives on PlayStation.

Gears of War: Reloaded is set to be released later this month, on 26th August, across PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It's a revamped edition of the original Gears of War, which first debuted on Xbox almost 20 years ago (yes, it has really been that long).

Ouch. Since when do we consider Cliffy B the "co-creator" of Gears?

maximusprime_266d ago

Good spot, title corrected. I copied title from Gamespot because I couldn't fit or amend Eurogamer's long title..

Yes Cliffy B is the creator

VenomUK266d ago (Edited 266d ago )

He’s changing his tune. When Microsoft bought the Gears of War franchise from Epic Games Cliff Blezinski gloatingly wrote: ‘I suppose this puts the nail in the coffin of the question “Will Gears ever come to PlayStation?”’

Maybe he’s in line for all the royalties that will come from the PS5 remaster.

Cacabunga266d ago

I haven’t seen this face for an eternity..

Doc-Bobko266d ago

Best thing for this franchise is to be multiplatform.

Shane Kim266d ago

So why did you do it exclusive in the first place?

ocelot07266d ago

Microsoft offered a lot of money is my guess. I remember they actually had a PS3 build up and running (not great mind you). Not sure if they planned on releasing Gears 2 and future installments at that point. My guess yes but Microsoft made a deal to make it exclusive and then out right buying the IP.

Reaper22_266d ago

Just like sony did Resistance .

franwex265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

Not to mention that it was the game that convinced Microsoft to use 512MB instead of 256 of RAM when they showed them the build difference. Microsoft was so impressed that they HAD to have it.

UnbreakableAlex265d ago

Back in the day Gears was graphically top notch and Playstation didn't have the power to run it. Nowdays the hardware is pretty equal.

TriniOutsider265d ago

The PS3 had plenty of power to run.

DarXyde265d ago

PS3 was pretty capable hardware and it had a better (albeit difficult) CPU than the Xbox 360, though Xbox 360 had a better GPU. It was generally a wash between the two. The RAM difference came down to configuration (unified on X360 + 10MB EDRAM, split RAM pools on PS3).

Don't know what you're going on about.

1Victor261d ago

@breakablealex: “ Back in the day Gears was graphically top notch and Playstation didn't have the power to run it.”
Is that why PS3 low/mid gen games was looking far better than Xbox 360? Is that why uncharted beat gears at the game of the year awards and the other 2 ether won or was nominated while gears was left at the lock doors 😱

.
“ Nowdays the hardware is pretty equal.“
😩🤦🏿
I see the obscured decease is spreading 😱

SockeyBoy266d ago

There are two developers I can't stand, this dude and Phil Fish

YoungKingDoran265d ago

I think Cliff has been humbled in recent times and seems alot better than in the past

Hereandthere266d ago

As an xbox only player, im happy that final fantasy is not exclusive to sony anymore. nice trade.

UnbreakableAlex265d ago

Unfortunately FF games get worse and worse...

jznrpg265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

I wouldn’t hold your breath as FF16 didn’t sell at all on Xbox. Maybe one more chance if that

gold_drake265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

trade?
girl. lets wait and see.

square goes where they get the most money from. be it exclusivity or not.
