Big jump in Microsoft profits expected

Microsoft Corp. is expected to report a big first-quarter profit jump on Thursday, boosted in part by strong Halo game and Office software sales.
Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is one of the largest employers in the Silicon Valley, with operations in Mountain View and about 1,850 local employees.

...what companies are making more than this. Microsoft haters will find fault Im sure.

Sheikh Yerbouti5684d ago (Edited 5684d ago )

Because you can have a jump in profits and still be disappointed. Imagine if the 360 had a 100% jump in sales in Japan, would you think it was outselling the PS3...no.

This doesn't absolve the real issues Microsoft has.

EDIT: Another disagree...am I going to ever get an actual reply?

IHateYouFanboys5684d ago

"This doesn't absolve the real issues Microsoft has."

finding a bank big enough to hold all their massive profits? selling too many operating systems? being the number 1 HD console of this generation?

SyphonFilter5684d ago

nice spin, putting hd since you know Wii is the real number one console if we are talking about sales. never knew being in last place in Europe and japan meant #1 hd console.1 year headstart and they let Sony get close with 3.6 with them heading to 3rd eventually guaranteed.

Mystogan5684d ago (Edited 5684d ago )

Japan and Europe are not the world..Nice spin, saying last place in Europe when its only like 300k behind lol, that will definitely change when Kinect comes along.

Ps3 can have japan.

Elven65684d ago

European sales figures were released?

Sheikh Yerbouti5683d ago (Edited 5683d ago )

@ all you mofos.

Microsoft has struggles like any other business. I know you are sucking at the teats of Microsoft, but come on! Stop being fanboys for two minutes.

You'd think Microsoft owned all the money from what you say. It doesn't...far from it. Its lags market share - behind Google, Apple and Nintendo without exception - meaning apples to apples, Microsoft is getting whipped by the competition in all areas. You have to aggregate all their business division to boast large numbers.

But Nintendo doesn't make an operating system or phones. Apples doesn't have a search engine. Google doesn't have a console. You fanboys have no idea of what you are talking about-compare division to division. But noooo...talking bad about Microsoft hurts your infantile feelings!

Specifically@IHateYouFanboys

You are one of the biggest fanboys going. "Finding a bank big enough to hold all their massive profits." LOL. Don't be a moron. It is all relative, and Microsoft is just having its ups and down. Sorry, but this article proves diddly.

After all they have lost in the past few quarters, we should expect some increase.

feelintheflow5683d ago

While google owns a big chunk of the search engine business and apple owns the ipod business and nintendo owns handheld gameing and consoles this generation... Microsoft absolutely obliterates everyone else in Computer operating systems. I would be very happy killing it in that category and being relevant in all those other catagories. Bing is slowly gaining market share, Zune is a critical success although not a sales success and the 360 is raking in the money through live and about to launch kinect that will boost the bottom line. So yes, while its easy to say MS doesn't do anything great, they do a lot of things good and absolutely completely dominate the O/S market. There billions in revenue may not be what experts or even some shareholders want, although we forget they started paying billions in dollars out in dividends a few years ago, so if they kept it, like Apple and Google do, they would make even more profit. Calling it like I see it.

AAACE55683d ago

You can view it anyway you want, but the fact remains that there aren't rumors going around of Apple considering to buy Nintendo or MS, so they must be doing something right!

Sheikh Yerbouti5683d ago

You know what is hilarious? Many consider this a site for Sony fanboys. The vast majority of your comments tell me that 360 fanboys are alive and well on this site. I don’t mean you guys are trolls or anything, but you appear to this unabashed belief that Microsoft is the greatest thing since sliced bread and all the ups and downs typical for organizations trying to maintain market share and dominance in their respective businesses never occurs.

Everyone knows Microsoft has the predominant OS for computers. Everyone knows Microsoft Office is the predominant software suite for business. Most are aware that Microsoft has large margins from having little operating overhead, typical for a software company. What you fail to know is this doesn’t guarantee success in other areas, nor does it mean Microsoft is meeting all its internal business goals.

Companies, principally shareholders are looking for growth...a return on their investment. It is why a Microsoft has ventured out to try new businesses, leveraging their margins to compete against the Sony’s, Apples, and Nintendo’s. It is just not doing a good job at it. The existence of Microsoft isn’t in question. It isn’t “doomed”. It is just struggling.

Most of you don’t remember when General Motors made washing machines, or even when Motorola were into network systems instead of just phones. These were large companies, still large companies, who were beaten by smaller companies and had to retreat back to their core competencies just to remain relevant. There is a reason Microsoft was compared to IBM in the 80’s. IBM is still around, but it is not a brand in my household like it was in the 80’s. These things happen, and Microsoft is no that different than any other large company.

That’s just the reality of it. Everyone can put their hand over their eyes and ears, press the disagree button and go back to believing, like Nihilism, that Microsoft has enough money to pay for both the Bush and Obama stimulus package, the war in Afghanistan, and Obamacare. But while I present facts, and not just my views, you can go off a live in your fanboy fantasies.

Nuff said. Now go learn something before you reply.

Halo sales next to no real impact on their profit. It's all about OS and Office product sales. We're talking about less than 1% of their overall profit when you take Halo into consideration.

just a few moments before there was an article on how M$ is dying

Windows 7 is selling like hotcakes, Xbox 360 is doing great, Windows 7 phone just released last week and already has 5% of the phone market

@Sheikh you act like MS = Xbox, MS also has a bunch of other things, primarily Windows.

@IHateYouFanboys @Syphon No One Cares, STFU and go outside.

Sheikh Yerbouti5683d ago (Edited 5683d ago )

IMHO XBox is probably the shining light for Microsoft. It is the other areas that having/have had problems. Kinect may be just the thing for Microsoft.

I fail to see your point. You probably don't see it either.

jden285683d ago

I agree, now for the rest of you...
If you have Dish network and there dvr it's powered by M$, own a new ford with sync tech thats powered bye M$, use a blu-ray player the av1 codec used for video is powered by M$, and for every failure of M$ to enter a new market ala Zune & Bing they tend to hand around making new interation after interation until they get it right...

Windows Phone is more likely to blame for the jump in profits.

The Lazy One5684d ago

despite your sarcasm, WP7 has only been out for a few days. Even if it were selling like crazy it wouldn't be responsible.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio20d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing20d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9220d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit20d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing20d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9220d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn223d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn222d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown22d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay22d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay22d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac22d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger22d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300022d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde22d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde22d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_21d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
