IGN: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 Review

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 is immediately engaging. It's strikingly beautiful, with fantastic vistas and superb character animations. Sadly though, its pretty face can only carry it so far when the rest of the game is comparatively weak. Repetitious combat and level designs, a shoe-horned in story, and a lack of depth to the experience overall keep this from being anything more than an adventure for the most hardcore of fans.

I cant Believe That This Is A 6.5,....I'm In Disappointment

BiggCMan5691d ago

do you buy your games based off of reviews? if so, then that just sucks, and i feel bad for you.

mushroomwig5691d ago

It's a good place to start, I know reviews are mainly opinion pieces but the biggest thing that stands out for me is how most of the reviews have stated how the game is short, now that's something that every gamer needs to be aware of.

But hey, if you want to spend $60 on a singleplayer only 4-5 hour game then feel free.

Downtown boogey5691d ago (Edited 5691d ago )

Mushroomwig is absolutely right. There are a LOT of other factors other than the length too like polish (bugs, glitches), story and repetitiveness/variety that you CANNOT JUST KNOW from a demo or gameplay vids!

DaTruth5691d ago (Edited 5691d ago )

Generally when I buy a game, I like to know what someone else thinks of it first!

Renting a game to buy it after immediately adds $10 to the already $60 pricetag. And with a four to five hour campaign, there wouldn't be much reason to buy it after!

vickers5005691d ago

I feel envious of you, because apparently you have enough money to throw at whatever peaks your interest. Me? I have to use reviews to decide between which of the two games I want to purchase.

But good for you that you don't have to make that choice and can go ahead and buy both.

Spydiggity5691d ago

you mean the sequel to a VERY crappy game turned out to be crappy? i'm shocked!!!

deafwing5691d ago

it could have been a contenda ... I will gamefly it though for trophies :D

RedDead5691d ago

Anyone ever play th Psp version of the first one? It was so much better than the console version, I dunno why, but for a psp game it was good, up there with my fav psp games surprisingly. Console version was boring though.

tacosRcool5691d ago

I don't base my game purchases off any reviews but I rather play the demo or actually buy it myself to see for myself.

After playing and loving the first game (also being a super Star Wars nerd)I am very dissapointed in the length of this game.

There is such a massive universe and story to expand upon that it is a shame the game is so short. This game, for me, is one of those "well if you're fan of the genre" games that I would buy. I can get over repetitive gameplay, etc. as long as the game builds upon what made it great.

I would have bought this game this week (Best Buy has a buy 2 get 1 free that I was gonna take advantage of) but after hearing this review and reading others, I don't think the devs earned their moneuy. Sounds like they took a great product, re-hashed it a bit, then puked out a sequel to make some $$$ instead of building on the original and making a memorable sequel.

Guess I'll wait for a buy 2 get 1 free USED sale!

jadenkorri5691d ago

bought it today, played the first level, kinda repetitive and boring, stopped to eat, but im gonna play cod mw2 after wards, that says a lot right there.

OneSneakyMofo5691d ago

I will be renting this regardless of score. I'm a Star Wars nerd.

Suck it, Trekkies.

CYCLEGAMER5691d ago

If you guys are so skeptical about the game why not just rent it? Personally, even though the game is a little repetitive I really really like it. In fact this is the only Star Wars game that I have been able to get into. I generally lose interest in games, but I only put this one down when I have to (work, eat, etc).

Guess what Im trying to say is, I would have not been able to enjoy this game if I listened to reviews/reviewers which is why I don't pay them to much mind.

Moentjers5691d ago

just don't look at ign for reviews.
try metacritic for other opinions.

Sheikh Yerbouti5691d ago (Edited 5691d ago )

If you played the first game and enjoyed it, don't be disappointed. Much of his criticism could be placed on the first game, which was 7 pointer imho and I enjoyed it. People overlook the first game's flaws because the story was awesome.

So it short and repetitious, but how repetitious can it be if it is short?

IGN must be really happy to give such low scores this year....i just cant wait for their black ops review >:(

plb5691d ago

10/10
you know it's coming..

jeseth5691d ago

God of War 3
Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption

as contenders I hope...

badz1495691d ago

will score AT LEAST 9.5 from IGN! Kotick knows this already

COD: Blackops review summary

Short singleplayer 4 hours on normal
Shoe horned story
Mediocore graphics
Mediocore voice acting
No character developement
Little enemy variation
Much of the same multiplayer
Little improvements over MW2

10/10
And don't disagree, I emplore you to replay MW2 and your see just how few enemy type there are in that game, how poor the graphics are, the voice acting etc.

Is it unfair to base a sequel on the original? Mostly.
Is it unfair to base a sequel on the what we've seen of the sequel and it's similarities to the original? No.

Liamario5691d ago

Completely and totally accurate. The same thing with Fallout New Vegas. That was even worse than the original.

I think the best example of all is Halo. Very little change amongst the series, but if any other game doesn't change completely, they get marked down because of it.

mrv3215691d ago

Uncharted 1 to Uncharted 2

No Multiplayer-FULLY FEATURE MULTIPLAYER WITH SUPPORT
No co-op-3 player co-op

Yet it's too much like Uncharted 1 according to gametrailers... adding multiplayer and co-op isn;t enough.

TheBlackSmoke5691d ago

Uncharted 2 had to literally push the boundaries in every aspect of game design in order to achieve its perfect scores. IF Uncharted 2 even had just one of fallout NV bugs they would of slaughtered it.

despair5691d ago

@mrv321

well in all fairness the graphics look good, not sure how good yet though lol.

I agree with that though they always say MP this and that with COD as if its supposed to be everything for the game and use it to justify the small SP mode and then MP only games like MAG they say its MP only and gets repetitive. Every COD game I've played since COD 2 MP gets repetitive after 2-3 games in each mode(which by the way have never been new or different from things I've been playing since UT days).

The enemies in COD are as generic as they come with the gameplay staying the same with a few vehicles or slightly different ones thrown in (by few i mean 1 or 2). Its always shoot everything that moves, run, die from random pop up enemy and repeat. Don't even get me started on "story". 10/10 right?

gypsygib5691d ago

I agree, MW2's SP story was terrible. COD4 had one of the best for a MP centric FPS game but MW2 was really short and really bad, but none of the reviewers complained about it's lack of quality aside from saying it was short.

Der_Kommandant5691d ago (Edited 5691d ago )

They said the same about Medal of Honor and i enjoyed it

IGN has finally lost me

jeseth5691d ago

but the MP is broken and when you are competing against other established FPS juggernauts you can't screw up the MP.

HungPHATx5691d ago

Dude IGN lost me years ago ! They burry ever game that doesn't come with a check , that's why I go by demos ! I like it , I buy it , never listen to reviewers this game is made for Star Wars fans ! Look at the last 3 movies , reviewers dissed it , Fans loved it

hennessey865691d ago

i think there reviews are pretty good compared to some like edge for exsample. I played the demo and wasnt impressed, i loved the first one but it didnt seem the same to me they somehow made it worse

badz1495691d ago

finally? they did with me LONG LONG time ago! see scores for earlier Tom Clancy's games this gen on 360 and PS3 and then Lost Planet, Bioshock and then FFXIII!

gillri5691d ago

was never hyped for this game, not one bit

Vanquish or Assassins creed is getting my money over the next 2 months

Dark_Energy5691d ago

I don't go with reviews, I choose myself which game I purchase. Just remember this another persons thoughts and everyone else's will be different.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle27d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7736d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga36d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199235d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga35d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman35d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

blacktiger35d ago

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box36d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion35d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7236d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7535d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit35d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14936d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7736d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
