Who's Loading The Bigger Gun, Sony or Microsoft?

If Microsoft isn't ignoring the 3D revolution and they’re not going to create technology to work with special glasses, what are they hiding behind the development doors?

It`s no secret, everyone including Sony is working on a "no glasses" 3D. But like 3D w/ glasses, the tech will take time to perfect. "No glasses" 3D won`t be mainstream for a few years, so if you want 3D now or anytime soon buy the one`s w/ glasses.

GreenRingOfLife5745d ago (Edited 5745d ago )

I think Microsoft is (my opinion)

Because of KINECT as well as the half a billion dollar marketing campaign they are starting (much bigger than the coca cola campain for move) and not to mention that Microsoft already did the Halo Reach Mountain Dew campagin which kinda neutrals out sonys coca cola move thingy

plus the next Xbox is coming soon and its sure to be 3d enabled (glasses free) as well as be Kinect compatible, wow I cant wait for it!!

ps3 is going to be operating for more years to come, microsoft already wants a new console out. not much of a life span

Vicodin5745d ago (Edited 5745d ago )

Kinnetic?

You mean that old PS2 Eye Toy type motion controls that are so bad Microsoft had to fake their demos of it at E3 for the past two years and is desperately trying to keep the press from reviewing it just like SquareEnix is trying with their FFXIV fiasco?

A half a billion dollars isn't going to salvage Microsoft's Kinetic fiasco.

Compared to Sony and the PS3:

* 21 first party dev studios(MS only has 3)
* The insane graphical advantage the PS3 has over the weaker Xbox 360 - Uncharted 1&2,Killzone 2&3,Gran Turisom 5...
* Free online for everyone
* Standard dedicated servers for lagfree online play
* Support from all three major console regions - Asia,NA,Europe
* Blu-Ray 1080p movies standard
* 3D gaming
* Move - the only 1:1 motion controls available

Yeah, Kinetic and its shovelware has a chance against that.

Imperator5745d ago

After so much money on Kinect, do you think they really intend to release a new console soon? LMAO.

kneon5745d ago

@GreenRingOfLife

Apparently you are quite clueless when it comes to 3D. The glasses free part is on the display side, not the video source. Any 3D source can be displayed on a glasses free 3D display, so the PS3 is already compatible with glasses free 3D. So you can go rush out and buy the crappy Toshiba ones that are coming out if you like.

IHateYouFanboys5745d ago

@Vicodin:

"* 21 first party dev studios(MS only has 3)

1. first party studios dont mean as much when 99% of the best games on the console are third party multiplatform.
2. the PS3 has no graphical advantage over the 360. refer to any video of Gears of War 3 to prove this.
3. standard dedicated servers? so why doesnt Uncharted 2 have dedicated servers? i dont think you understand what youre trying to say. developers are free to use dedicated servers on both the PS3 and 360. pretty much the only ones that do on the PS3 are Sony owned companies, because sony provide the servers. even then, like in Uncharted 2s case, not all of them take the dedicated server route.
4. the 360 has support from the 3 main regions too. the japanese public give them very little support, but the developers are fully on board. and in the grand scheme of things, having the support of the japanese public means 2/10ths of f#$%-all.
5. the 360 offers numerous ways of watching 1080p videos, through streaming or download.
6. the 360 has 3D gaming.
7. Kinect offers 1:1 control as well. if you say it doesnt, you obviously dont know what 1:1 actually is, and you probably think that if theres a lag in the actions it means its not 1:1. this is incorrect - 1:1 has nothing to do with lag.

gcolley5745d ago

@IHateYouFanboys... why are you bothering. he obviously feels so strongly about his beloved console he doesn't mind coming off as a douchebag fanboy. this is one deluded idiot you are wasting your time with. it is like trying to talk a Jehovah's whitness out of their religion at your front door.

Keltik825744d ago

Are you seriously this delusional or do you intentionally say stupid things? The next Xbox is coming out soon?! Really, you honestly think that?

jessupj5744d ago

You've obviously never played or even seen a PS3 exclusive if you actually believe they have no graphical advantage and that 99% of multiplats are better than anything else out there. If you did you'd know how absolutely ridiculas that is. There's just so many things wrong with that statement I don't know where to begin...

5744d ago
IHateYouFanboys5744d ago (Edited 5744d ago )

@jessupj: "You've obviously never played or even seen a PS3 exclusive"

incorrect. the only games i own for my PS3 are exclusives, about 8 of them.

@Booch: "The underpowered and poorly designed Xbox 360 still can't even come up with a game that has Uncharted 1 level graphics..."

underpowered and poorly designed? how? its GPU is more powerful than the PS3s. its CPU has the same number of hardware threads (6) and runs at the same speed (3.2GHz). its design is actually fantastic, with incredible bus speeds and the eDRAM is brilliant for developers. the PS3 is the one with design problems.

Uncharted 1 didnt even look as good as Gears of War 1, let alone Gears 2. it had about 50% frame-tearing too.

"The PS2,GameCube, and Xbox were all similar in graphical power last gen."

wrong again. the xbox was MUCH more powerful graphically than the PS2. refer to the splinter cell games for the biggest evidence of this. this is not a debatable fact either.

" The PS2 destroyed the Dreamcast graphically."
also 100% incorrect. anyone that had both - myself included - can attest to this. the DC version of quake 3 was utterly beautiful and ran like a dream. the PS2 version, well the less said the better. same with games like UFC, Smackdown/royal rumble, Soul Calibur, etc.

"That's what happens when a company with zero console hardware experience rushes out a defective console "

so the xbox doesnt count as hardware experience? cause it came out before the 360 did.....wouldnt that mean that they DONT have zero hardware experience, on account of already having released hardware years earlier?

typical fanboy lol.

@FlatulentGhost below:

epic lolz! firstly, half of those 'screenshots' from Uncharted are actually from an unreleased build, not what we got at retail. now you might say that the retail game would look better, but thats not true. the unreleased build there was like the Killzone 2 'target render' - ie. it could not run on a PS3. those 'screenshots' of Uncharted are also supersampled, or did you not realise those images are MUCH bigger than the 1280x720 that is the games native resolution, since theres no way in the game to get character models up that close to take a screen capture? of course you didnt lol. putting a HUD on the top of the supersampled bullshot doesnt trick anyone whos got more than half a brain.

that ridiculously poor excuse for a website has also gone through and picked the very best possible situations for Uncharted and the worst for Gears to compare.

and also, none of that takes into account the fact that when youre PLAYING the game, Uncharted cant go 3 frames without tearing right in the middle of the screen lol.

FlatulentGhost5744d ago

A point by point breakdown using actual screen captures of Uncharted 1 humiliating Gears of War:

http://kineticninja.blogspo...

Mind boggling that Gears of War is the best the Xbox 360 can do and yet it is still destroyed by the first Uncharted.

ComboBreaker5744d ago (Edited 5744d ago )

We have PS3s and we have actually played Uncharted, and we can attest to you that, yes, those are in-game screen-shots of Uncharted, and yes, you can actually walk that close to Sully, and yes, Sully does actually look exactly like those screen-shots on our HDTVs.

I mean, come on dude, we've played it, we know what we're talking about. There's no point in trying to convince us to believe in your opinion.

It's the same as you're trying to convince us that a Civic is faster than a Lamborghini, but we have already raced and therefore already know for a fact that a Lamborghini is faster.

Sony is not only developing the 3DTVs with Glasses and without Glasses, also is developing a 360° 3D display:
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Sony is developing more than this 3D Tech stuff.

darthv725745d ago

that is where they should be heading towards. This is a good step in that direction.

vsr5744d ago

Ms have timed exclusive dlc for COD only. next digital distribution xbox will be a failure and it won't interfere 3rd party PS3 exclusives like this gen.

Doctorofreality5745d ago

I read an article basically describing how THQ are in deep with some tech that can do the 3D without the specs, which may be pure rumour but anything is possible right?

kneon5745d ago (Edited 5745d ago )

There are lots of companies with the tech for glasses free 3D. The trick is to make it work for multiple viewers over a wide viewing angle and not have it cost more than a new car. We'll see who get's there first.

TheHip145745d ago

would you really wanna have to wear those big clunky glasses while gaming though

Parapraxis5745d ago

YEAH!
Next they'll be telling us to wear big ear-muffin headsets or stick stuff in our ears!

Thecraft19895745d ago

You really should try before you complain and really glasses are not the clunky well the ones I got with my sony are not they are fine while playing wipeout HD with my mates for few hours.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 3D Also is amazing I just wish some more blu rays would have 3d anyone with list of upcoming and ones that are out ?

Keltik825744d ago

I also have a 3D TV. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was so amazing and watching regular movies now suck lol. StarDust HD was really cool too.

ComboBreaker5744d ago (Edited 5744d ago )

"would you really wanna have to wear those big clunky glasses while gaming though"

Hmm...

Would you really wanna have to wear those big clunky headphone while listening to music though?

Would you really wanna have to wear those big clunky snowboards while snowboarding though?

Would you really wanna have to wear those big clunky football clits while playing football though?

Microsoft Gaming Revenue Drops 7% Year-on-Year, Content and Services Down 5%, Xbox Hardware Down 33%

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio74d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing74d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9274d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit74d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing74d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9274d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8576d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele76d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla76d ago (Edited 76d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk76d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10177d ago (Edited 77d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit76d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg76d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10176d ago (Edited 76d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14976d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay76d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn277d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers76d ago (Edited 76d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn276d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown76d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos76d ago (Edited 76d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay76d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay76d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac76d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger76d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300076d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde76d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood76d ago (Edited 76d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde76d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
