Speaking to CNN, Microsoft studios boss Phil Spencer said that the firm was unsure about the future of glasses-based multiplayer 3D gaming - commenting that it risks a "weird disconnect" to players.

fr0sty5736d ago

he's specifically referring to a technology sony patented (split screen gaming where each player gets a full screen thanks to the 3d glasses blocking out the other player's frames), so it's a dig at ps3's 3d.

@"he's specifically referring o a technology sony patented (split screen gaming where each player gets a full screen thanks to the 3d glasses blocking out the other player's frames), so it's a dig at ps3's 3d."

dude if you had more than 2 people you'd need a ludicrously expensive TV or you'd get noticeably bad framerates. The majority of TVs have 60hz, so with 2 players you're already looking at a MAX of 30fps for each player. If it's in 3D, you drop by another factor of 2 to 15 fps per person with just 2 people.

It's a solid concept, but like most 3D it will be a few years before we have the tech to make it mainstream.

The Lazy One5736d ago

sorry I missed this:

"apple ipad
ms have now announced a tablet "

MS has had tablets for the last decade. They just haven't gotten big until now with the ipad/kindle/what have you. There have been tons of tablets running windows for years and years.

There are a couple things in your list that are suspect. Both microsoft and apple stole the gui from xerox (stole in that Xerox gave it to them). MSN had search right around when Google came into existence, bing is just their rebranded search because MSN search had barely any of the market. Windows Mobile has been around for 10 years. There's also things that would have happened regardless of the competitor like mouses and fonts.

Not saying M$ never copied anything, but every major corporation does. Seriously. Just pick a random major corporation and you could find a million things they copied or improved upon.

"Sony: Playstation

MS was in the console biz long before Sony but just went back to it with Dreamcast and Xbox.

kneon5736d ago

@The Lazy One

Only low end tvs are 60hz now, and with 3d tvs I don't think there are any below 120hz, most are 240hz+, and you do need a 3d TV for this to work. So each player could get at least 60fps because in this mode it's not necessarily in 3D, it's about giving each player a full screen view. Or you could do 4 player 2D at 30fps with each player having a full screen and not being able to see the other players screen. That's just awesome, even in 2D.

This is just the same old shortsighted Microsoft all over again. They designed the 360 for 720p and no HDMI because there were so few 1080p TVs, now it's hard to find a TV over 32" that isn't 1080p. Even most 32" TVs are 1080p now. Within a few years it will be hard to find a TV that doesn't support 3D.

"I'm confident that I'm missing something, but I think that you get the message. MS HAS RARELY led "

They just make a better product? Clearly a lot of those technology companies/product died?

However, I'm almost certain if you look at any company product I can point to a similar predecessor! So I don't believe your point holds!

The Lazy One5736d ago

Yea looks like they jumped up this year, but the PS3 still only sends a max of 60 hertz. So either way you'll either get a smaller resolution or a lower framerate. I don't doubt at all the tech will be there some way or another soon, but with this generation of devices it would just be like trying to pull a dodge viper with a horse.

That's the problem with trying to adapt new tech to older systems (same with kinect). They didn't have these things to worry about in their original specs, so they didn't have the higher requirements needed. Next gen should see an enormous increase in tech with all the new technology. They won't have to try to fit the new tech to an old system, they can adapt the system to best use the technology.

kneon5735d ago

I don't know if the PS3 has any sort of hard limit on the output frequency, but surely it doesn't have enough horsepower to render 4 completely different 1080p, or even 720p screens. I think this gen the most we can expect from the concept in this patent is 2 player 2D at no more than 720p, which is still pretty cool.

But next gen I expect we'll see at least 4 player 2D and 2 player 3D all at 1080p

"Every game with DLC's which can easily put on bluray without extra cost"

thats a fucked up statement, how are you supposed to get DLC on a new release? do you think these developers have all this DLC available when the main game ships? nope sorry. DLC is created after the game has gone gold/printing.

and the no extra cost bit is even more stupid..... it costs nothing to spend man-hours on a side project? lol wrong again. get off sony's balls already

The Wood5736d ago (Edited 5736d ago )

when has MS ever given credit to the opposition. Their whole mantra is 'knock what you dont got til you do got'

MS seem to downplay the opposition as many companies do *remembers rumble being downplayed by sony* Its just that MS do it MORE than the opposition in my honest opinion

@DelbertGrady

it may not be about anybody in particular but they wouldn't be saying this IF they were at the forefront. It reminds me how they backtracked over the hd dvd saga....hd dvd was the future until it was beaten so DD because the 'new' future if you get my drift

M$ downplays Rumble now, cause of kinect...how things have changed

The Wood5736d ago (Edited 5736d ago )

its a concept/practice that eludes you. Do you have anything to say about the article? An opinion maybe..

@ kain81 lol, the irony and how true

@ blacsheep way above

Thats a comprehensive list but im sure a list could be drawn up of sony's copying or any company for that matter. Something that should be highlighted is their lack of innovation...not just in their xbox division btw and please dont tell me Kinect cause eyetoy has pretty much been there done that and has the t-shirt. Achievements and their console online integration and standardisation/uniformity is MS main innovation since they entered the market imo...credit where its due

EDIT for above,
'so DD because the 'new' future ' became NOT because...sorry

fr0sty5736d ago (Edited 5736d ago )

I guess wifi became mainstream this year too, huh? I guess whenever you release a console capable of rendering a 3D image and outputting it via HDMI 1.4 as required by the 3D spec, it'll become mainstream also right?

"Trying to get a bunch of people playing together in a room where not everybody sees the same thing ... is kind of a weird disconnect to me."

Oh, so now having split screen where each player has their own screen (thanks to the 3d glasses, they block out frames where the other player's screen is being displayed, a tech recently patented by sony) is a bad thing because it causes a "disconnect"? So we're supposed to want our friends to see which play we pick in madden? we're supposed to have them be able to tell where we are on the map in warhawk just by looking at our screen? this is a good thing how?

I see a bunch of shots being taken because their system can't do X feature, much like Sony bashed rumble when they legally couldn't use it. MS knows they can't do proper 3D. They know they can't do the full screen split screen tech where each player gets their own screen only visible to themselves all on the same TV. So they're bashing it at every opportunity. Saying they are waiting on autostereoscopic (which is very expensive and doesn't currently work all that well) buys them a lot of time to get their act together and release a 3-D capable system.

They're admitting that you won't see 3-D this gen out of them. not true 120fps 3-D in HD (yes, few ps3 games can do it to, but the fact remains that it has the capability should the dev choose to utilize it), and not 4 player full screen split screen all on the same TV.

"As a corporate mandate, I don't need to sell you a new TV,"

"That's not part of my business model. Other companies maybe have that part of their business model. I don't."

Yeah, you just need to sell people things they otherwise get for free, like online services, or video chat, or access to netflix or any other pay service... yeah. i'll take a sony rep trying to sell me on a 3dtv over that.

boing5736d ago (Edited 5736d ago )

Never mind

fr0sty5736d ago (Edited 5736d ago )

"Trying to get a bunch of people playing together in a room where not everybody sees the same thing ... is kind of a weird disconnect to me."

That's what he said. he's talking about the tech sony patented that alternates frames on the tv from player 1's frame to player 2's, and so on, and the glasses block out the frame that each player is not supposed to see, effectively giving you split screen gaming but at full screen for each player.

funny thing is, sony hasn't even announced using this tech yet. they only patented it. this means MS is reacting to things that haven't even been announced yet.

Karooo5736d ago

they make such headlines and are a top site in the UK

Corrwin5736d ago

I don't think an expensive gimmick like 3D is going to have quite the effect as Developers having to cut content, pay extra for more disks, work on last generation's data protocols.

Rocks in glass houses and all.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio65d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing65d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9265d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit65d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing65d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9265d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay67d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn267d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers67d ago (Edited 67d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn267d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown67d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos67d ago (Edited 67d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay67d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay67d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac66d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger67d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300067d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde67d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood67d ago (Edited 67d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde67d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_66d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
