This is the first time I’ve seen the Blu-ray logo on a Tombstone on N4G (the HD DVD logo has been there a few times already).

It’s still way too early to declare anyone the winner or loser. Although I do think that HD DVD is ready for a big surge and Blu-ray has many flaws in concept & manufacturing that could prevent it from gaining market beyond the PS3.

I predicted HD-DVD dead too untill 2 weeks ago.

everyone knows if Sony did not put BD drives in the Ps3, and now have to justify it , as well as developers, sony would be number #1 in this sh#t instead of 3. As of right now. They gave MS the oppotunity, eventhough Ms fumbled a couple of times. They still took it and is now leading.

BD hardware is sitll not ready as HD-DVD is, as far as features and such. I'm sure Sony knew this.

The sale of the Ps3 is not what it could of been. Imagine $400 or less Ps3, it would of been game over. Now they have to cathup to MS, and if MS continues to do well it won't be easy. Even if alot of gamers have Ps2. Plenty Xbox gamers were PS 1/2 owners.

Also the Ps3 was late ofcourse because of the BD issue. coupled with the cell's difficulty of non-traditional programming, we all can see why Sony is behind and playing catchup.

This guy has some gooid points that have been argured in terms of strategy, but we don't know who will win. so disagree with that.

This guy is nuts. It's true that Blu-Ray could lose. Nothing is set in stone. But the PS3 has been on the market for less than a year and has sold over 4 million systems and that's with competition. The 360 sold a little less than 6 million in a year with no competition. How is the PS3 failing. And I don't care what people think, it will be a very long time before digital downloads take over optical discs. Yes it's a viable option but thats all it is, an option. Who would want to sit and download a multiple gig game when there several hundred thousand or more people trying to do the same. It's frustrating enough to download a 800mb demo when everybody else doing it. I love being able to download games and music and such but I don't want it to be the primary source for me at least not in the near future.

In terms of those who own a 360 or a PS3, the PS3 owners are buying Blu-Ray movies whilst the 360 owners are not because they'd have to buy an Add-On.

Yet they're always here chatting crap about Blu-Ray and rallying HD-DVD. The irony is just sad.

That HD-DVD paid 150 million dollar for a 18 month contract with Paramount/Dreamworks (since they are essentially the same company, only different branches)? Where is the logic in his argument? He states the company that bribes another is better off? Paying a company for exclusivity seems like desperation to me.

And last I checked, Fox / Disney are still exclusive to Blu-Ray. I still don't understand how anyone can argue against PROGRESS. Blu-Ray is a larger media format, lets forget about console wars for a second. Don't we all want the best media format?

Blu-Ray is the leading format, is outselling HD-DVD on a regular basis by a 2:1 or greater margin, sells software generally cheaper than HD-DVD, price of the hardware is dropping considerably fast, and it's losing? Yep, you have to believe this guy... *cough*

This guy gets paid to say stupid sh!t. Noone expects bluray or hddvd to be a data backup. Harddrives are too cheap. thats obvious. Also digital distribution is getting bigger. which isnt a big deal. One thing will never change. People want to buy a movie and have something to show for it like a disk and case. Well hd is the next big thing since everyone will have to either get an hd receiver or buy an hdtv soon in the us. Thats when the sales will really take of. People will start buying the hd movies. Which you have to have bluray or hddvd to store them on. Also the gaming industry needs a disk to store the ever increasing size games on. So as you can see one of those formats will survive. Bluray is already integrated in ps3 and thats where the game industry is headed. the consumer doesnt need 25gb storage disks but the movie and game industry will.
edit: the only other format i can see that serves this purpose is the flash media. But its not cheap enough yet. And even if bluray goes the way of the UMD..it still serves an important purpose to the gamer.
hddvd is only relying on movies to support it. bluray has games and movies to support it. you can focus on the price of an hd player versus a bluray player all you want...but you will never be able to watch a sony pictures move or a disney movie on an hd player no matter how cheap they get. which bluray will come down in price eventually..thats just logical. and the exclusive contracts for hd dvd are for 18 months...which amounts to "lets see how it goes for a year and then set up plans to bail out during the last 6 months when it doesnt work out like we thought. but hey we got an ass load of money up front. lets go to hawaii."

A typical bluray or hddvd movie costs 30 dollars.

granted i have some and well i think ill be getting an hddvd addon, but either way those movies are freaking expensive.

For both formats to get popular its going to be a few years for movie prices to go down. If i remember correctly dvds were quite expensive and dvd players at first were pretty expensive.

So we kinda do have to wait a while to see what happens.

Apparently from what i have heard, HDDVD has more features(if someone could explain the differences in features please do and don't be a fanboy about it).

But Bluray has more space.

Video and audio wise they seem to basically be the same, if any difference its probably minor.

Either way both formats seem pretty good minus studio support for HDDVD, but that seems to be changing.

I think with this last move by Paramount that HD-DVD has a great shot at winning this war. This X-mas is gonna push HD DVD hard. Cheaper stand-alone players and Transformers on HD-DVD only...pretty good deal for the HD-DVD crew.

This article by Rob Enderle is a timed hit piece for the HD-DVD side regardless how neutral he tries to sound. Any person especially an analyst knows you can't draw any conclusions about Blu-Ray or the PS3 yet, they haven't been out long enough, the data WILL NOT be accurate. What a Shill

I can't say I agree with this article at all. The author makes a lot of assumptions and predictions. Personally, I prefer to deal with the facts as they stand. Is it a blow that Paramount went from neutral to HD DVD exclusive? Yes. But the situation remains unclear.

Blu-ray has been outselling HD DVD for whatever reason for a long time now. Their is a swing in its favor and despite losing a studio it has a lot going for it. Here are a few things:

1) I used to work at a video store. My experience in my years there were that people would consistantly ask for a) horror movies and b) kids/family movies. Blu-ray has the monopoly of the latter category with Disney being an exclusive partner.

2) The PS3 is a strength. Despite what the author here believes, 5 million PS3's worldwide adds a lot of support to Blu-ray. I have friends and co-workers that have purchased a PS3 and all have amassed fair Blu-ray collections. I'm confident this wouldn't be so (yet) if not for the PS3. Some own XBox 360's and Wii's as well, if HD DVD were included in either their movie purchasing habits may have been different.

3) Storage. Again the author of this article comes off as an amateur. He talks about how Blu-ray is not a viable storage option comparing it to an internal HDD. For convenience purposes it certainly is viable, I don't want to be pulling out my internal HDD everytime I want to transfer/share large files with family and friends. Also, it should be noted that he calls the disk 25GB and almost unknowingly doesn't mention the dual layer options that double the capacity.

...and finally:

4) Advertising. I have seen numerous ads that are either a) Blu-ray promotions or b) mention Blu-ray in someway. Honestly yesterday my uncle asked what I thought of Blu-ray. I gave a few thoughts of how I haven't adopted it because of HD DVD. After I explained a little he told me he had never heard of HD DVD. There is something to be said about a catchy name.

Dont worry. BlueRay is allready installed in at least six million PS3 consoles. It will not die in many years. And when broadband internet is at 1Gbps for everyone, at low cost, then maby well talk. Besides, I dont think anyone wants to store important data on a harddrive and then put it on the shelf because, Blu-Ray recordable disk will very soon cost 3-4 dollars and that is much cheaper than a Hard Drive. The guy who wrote this article is really stupid.

PS3 owner here. I love BD but like HDDVD I think they are both in danger of becoming the next laserdisc. Personally for me movie downloads via XBL and PSN or whatever is the way forward.
HDDVD and BD seriously need to get their heads together and try to unite the two formats somehow because its just too damn confusing for most people. This war sucks :(

PS fanbase to speed up the adoption of Bluray. They knew being second on the market that they would stand no chance of beating toshiba. Toshiba had a year headstart and a huge pricepoint advantage. Thus Sony used the PS3 to even things out touting that Bluray was "needed for gaming". In the end their loyal fanbase suffered bc of the high pricepoint of PS3, $600.

So in effect they have alienated most of their loyal fanbase by pricing too high and have also alienated people that supported HDDVD before the PS3 even came out. Now that PS3 sales are poor it looks like their shady marketing tactics have backfired on them.

first: he says sony is losing in the videogame market. WRONG. only the ps3. the ps2 and the psp, however, are still doing quite well considering that more people want next-gen consoles. the ps2 still sells consocle. and some months i see that ps2 outsells xbox360. he needs to get his facts straight before he says SONY is losing in videogames, its just ps3 but it wont be losing before too long because there is going to be another price drop soon and the reinvention of the 60 gig.

second: he says blu-ray costs more than HDDVD. thats wrong too. ive seen plenty of hddvd players for 1000+ and very few below that. now i may draw your attention towards that the average blu-ray player is between 500-1000 dollars. you know what the 500 dollar one is? the ps3. people still dont realize that buying a ps3 is a much better value than buying a blu-ray player.

universal and paramount havent given birth to many good movies recently. Sony Pictures has though. (sony/columbia/tristar/etc.)
davinci code, scarface, hot rod, brothers solomen. these are all hits and sell very well on both dvd and blu-ray. the biggest thing hddvd has is the Bourne trilogy. and that is balls. james bond would kick jason bourne's @$$ any day.

Neither format is able to win the place as next gen DVD in people's homes until some new marketing is done.

However, one format can beat the other. This is a showdown, or a battle of pride, at this point.

This Christams, HD DVD will stomp Blu-Ray - no doubt about it. Blu-Ray has Spider-Man 3 and Pirates 3, but it will still cost much more than HD DVD in terms of players and the movies themselves. The lower price, and the Paramount deal will make waves. Transformers will help out HD DVD in conjunction with a price drop on the players, and Sony can't match both.

If I were Toshiba, here is what I would do:

Since Toshiba has started using payoffs just like Sony has, Toshiba needs to get with Paramount and universal and work out an arrangement (payoff) to stop putting their movies on DVD format completely. Instead, what they need to do is put all of their movies on an HD DVD/DVD combo disc at an affordable price, which I would say should be about $20/movie. They won't make a fortune on movie sales, but they will make something. Right now, all they are trying to do is secure the market, and this would do it. Basically, Blockbuster would have to crawl out from under the table and rent HD DVD movies because Transformers, Shrek, etc would only be available on combo disc. Also, when people want Transformers to watch in their DVD players, they will get "trojan horsed" with the HD DVD version because it is simply printed on the other side of the disc. Once people build a nice library of HD DVD/DVD combo movies, they will be inclined to purchase an HD DVD player.

What would this do statistically for Toshiba?

1 - It would instantly crush Blu-Ray disc sales in comparison. Toshiba could count all movie sales as legitimate HD DVD movie sales... much in the same way the Sony crowd likes to call PS3 sales legitimate Blu-Ray movie player sales. Yet again, give them a taste of their own medicine.
2 - It would provide a nice transition from DVD. People don't have to make the plunge into an entirely new format.
3 - Transformers HD DVD/DVD combo disc would sell 25 million copies on its first day of release.
4 - Blockbuster would rent Transformers, lol. so, they have to rent HD DVD discs at this point. After all, their customers will want to see Transformers.
5 - It would build studio confidence any sway the likes of Disney and Fox within weeks.
6 - Win. Format war will be over with instantly, Sony would probably try to sue, but lose.

What would Sony do?

1 - Nothing. Blu-Ray movies are incapable of doing a combo format, so they would instantly be knocked out of the competition.
2 - Die. They would die a very fast, yet painful death.

Toshiba if you're reading this, give me a job in your marketing and promotional department. I could help you out more than you know. This war doesn't have to exist - you could end it today.

They're not even that much different. It's not nearly the leap in technology from VHS to DVD. It's a nonsense format war fueled by the fact that the PS3 was bundled with a blu-ray player.

How do you end up being a major financial advisor for such a large company and "forget" about all that. The PS3 is smoking 360 in all the other regions of the world and Blu-Ray is smoking HD-DVD. If you want the truth just look at the plain hard facts, 360 is only selling more than PS3 in USA and contrary to what many people are lead to beleive the entire world does NOT consist of the United States.

After this christmas...it will all be over...there is no way HD-DVD will sale over 4 million HD-DVD players in the next 6 months to 1 year....PS3 is almost at 5 million and there are over 300k standalone bluray players...and more comming out soon to be sold. PS3 will sale at least 3 to 4 million in the next 6 months to early march 2008....There will be another price drop of the PS3...and there will be sub $300 bluray players before christmas.

The paramount deal is only for 18 months.

As mentioned before... it is irrelevant for whom he works and he does bring up some interesting points. However, I would have to say that the only people going to lose are the consumers in this war between HD and BR. I personally prefer Bluray and have been on that bandwagon since its launch. I like what it is capable of and what it has the potential to do. Sure, the tech is expensive...but so is the HDDVD side. No new technology is cheap (at first)... but I am willing (and have) to whip out the extra cash for the state of the art. Right now... I think of the major consumer market of HDDVD and Bluray as a niche market since everyone can't afford it and some will never be able to. I was quite happy with DVD's until I stepped up my arsenal of equipment to include BR and HDDVD and WILL NEVER go back to regular dvds entirely. As for the movie companies deciding sides...they are crazy.... I refuse to buy HDDVD movies and I am sure that there are some that like HDDVD that feel the same way... am I missing out much...no...not as long as my console will upconvert the regular DVDs to semi-HD quality. I gave away my HDDVD player because I do believe Bluray is stronger in potential.
As far as the PS3 goes... I was never a PS1/PS2 fan.... still not really... but I have been nothing but impressed with my PS3 (granted, the ports from games made first for the 360 are crappy because developers don't take the time to redo the software to take full advantage of the PS3). I actually play it more than my 360 now. For those who say it was overpriced....maybe a little...after all...it is all new hardware....and you get what you pay for....

Now Microsoft is threating Linux vendors, accusing Linux vendors of stealing code, but they REFUSE to say what code. They tried this with SCO, and it failed. So, it will be interesting to see what MS tries to do next with NO evidence, and post SCO failure.

this is a gaming site, not a video format site. my ps3 plays blue-ray, your nintendo ds plays on cartridge, in the end its just another format to play games on. even if sony's blue ray failed it wouldnt effect my having fun with warhawk or final fantasy 13.

on the otherhand, when they have to cut stuff out of a game because theres not enough space (ff7 on n64, and DOA4 and some other games) then theres a prob. but aslong as i can play my games with no problem, then i dont care.
