Intel drops price of i3 processor

Intel have announced an upcoming 15% price drop for the darling of the dual-core, their i3 range of processors – specifically the i3 550. Since most games don’t see much (if any) benefit from a quad-core, let alone a hexa-core processor, this might suite a casual gamer on a budget.

If you look at Tom Hardware's benchmarks from last year, there's very little to get excited about with regards to Quad core. More and more games are taking advantage of 4 cores and it's obviously going to get better. But right now, for a "casual gamer" as stated in the article, 2 cores is more than enough.

Who ever wrote this article knows ZERO about PC gaming or hardware.

Sure most games can run very well on 2 cores but if the developer programs correctly they can run even better on 4 or 6 cores thus not bottlenecking your GPU and freeing up CPU time for your PC to better multi-task.

Remember a PC does more than just play games

Intel lowered the Core i3 to compete with the four core Athlon II X4 645 $119 which may be the best 4 core cpu for just over $100

Of course that's true but the point of the article was that most games out now don't take full advantage of 4 cores. That was the same conclusion Tom's Hardware reached in their testing. That is all I was saying. I was not dismissing the idea of a quad core, I actually use an i7 950 myself.

I'm well aware that games developers can make better use of more cores, and I hope next year that they will take better advantage of 4 and 6 core processors but again, if you read the article the point was that they are not fully utilized at this current stage.
