Because for the welfare of the site, we must stand up and try to eliminate FAKE and deceptive numbers. Just because precious NPD numbers have gone, doesn't mean we have to start believing the fake stuff from VGChartz.

@Wii-related-hate: Save it guys, Wii is beating PS3 in worldwide sales and don't worry, you'll eat your words when Wii beats PS3 in October and November thanks to Kirby, DKC, Sonic Colors, Epic Mickey and GoldenEye. Not to mention the Super Mario 25th Anniversary Bundle.

PROOF - (a) Super Mario Galaxy 2 had sold 4.09 million as per official numbers. VGC reported as 3 million. [I was following the numbers that time]

(b) It shows PS2 totals as 136 million, when we all know it sold well around 140 million.

Also, they are not 100% accurate? I'd say thats reason enough to call them fake.

I don't think there is any evidence that those upcoming Wii games are going to boost hardware sales for October and November. In fact, a new PS3 model is being released in Japan next week (320GB HDD, new chipset etc) so if anything PS3 is likely to see another boost.

On the topic of software sales, Ninja Theory seem to have shutup all of a sudden...

LoL, obviously, however, you do know VGchartz is known to bump up 360 numbers and lower PS3 numbers. So logically, that would lead to the assumption that the 360 effect has indeed died down.

This holiday season will be murder for Sony.

I said after adjustments. The numbers are subject to change as more data comes in.

30%? Thats a random number to claim? Do you sit at home calculating the differences? Anyway, as you say, NPD uses estimates just like VgChartz although I agree they are more accurate - they have to be with the sample size.

No they don't, they say their numbers our estimates and not 100% correct. Which is true. NPD do the same.

Not once has VgChartz reported that MS have sold more consoles than MS say they have shipped. The only time they made that mistake was when they overtracked the Wii during Christmas 2008. I agree that the PS3 is probably undertracked but with their adjustments its not far off now. Sony shipped 38.2 million at the end of the June. I expect them to report that they have shipped between 40 and 41.5 million by the end of September, so VgChartz figuers for the end of there should be over 39 million. As it stands at the mo tho they have it at 38.7 million, so yes the ps3 imo is undertracked.

Mint NPD gets paid by the 3 video game publishers to track the sales of their consoles, so no NPD does not predict numbers, they get retail sales data of units sold, vgc however make predictions and uses very little hard numbers.

And it shows, vgc just adjusted the PS3 up 400k in America and 300k in EMMA, that means vgc have been off on ps3 by 700k world wide. That is a crazy error on the part of vgc. These adjustment just put the ps3 and 360 gap back to where it was before the 360 slim got released, the truth is the ps3 have kept up with 360 dispite halo reach and the slim.

NPD does predict numberes because they do not get data from 100% of the market. Therefore they must estimate the numbers that they don't recieve on top of the numbers that they do get. That is the SAME as vgchartz but it is more accurate because they get data from more of the market.

Agreed, you could see the ps3 was undertracked, although it hasn't been adjusted up that much in the EMMEA (although it probably should be). Sony will release their shipments soon anyway.
