Does Sonic still matter?

With generally good previews for Sonic 4, and even better previews for the upcoming Sonic Colors it looks like Sonic the Hedgehog might finally be making a comeback, after nine long years of mediocrity or worse. Nine years, however, is a long, long time, and gaming has evolved while the fastest thing in video games has been stumbling about drunkenly. In a gaming landscape where shooters dominate and platformers have long been left behind, does Sonic the Hedgehog even matter anymore?

Yes. There is a reason why there is so much whining about Sonic games being bad and why you still see Sonic brand everywhere. Because it is an important part of console history.

Will be forever and Sonic brand will just be bigger when good games start rolling in. This includes Sonic 4 (which is out on iPhone) and Sonic Colors.

All those years and he still has appeal. My daughter *ADORES* Sonic, and plays his games daily.

Sonic Colors = Sonic Unleashed without the werehog parts
Sonic Free Riders = party gimmick-ware
Sonic 4 = Oh, how the mighty have fallen ( http://www.youtube.com/watc... )

Of course. Sonic is so cute and is one of the best platformers out there. Oh and Sega I want my sequel to Sonic Heros. That was the best sonic game they made and no that wasn't sarcasm.

Nintenuendo5626d ago

I'm sorry, but that distinction definitely belongs to the Chao garden from Sonic Adventure 2. I had more fun with that than ANY of the Sonic games in the last 10 years.

No sorry. Sonic is old hat. He need to be taken out of the picture. No offense but i would rather not see one of my best game characters of my childhood constantly be shifted and changed into crap just to keep him alive to make a few bucks. Just drop him and make a new character. I don't see what the problem with making new characters these days.If Sonic was good just imagine what else you could make. But no. Instead let's milk his franchise to death with nonsense like Mario and Sonic go to the Olympics until it all blows up in your faces.

Sonic Game Writers Had ‘Very Little Say’ On Story Scripts

The writing duo behind Sonic games like Sonic Colors and Sonic Lost World reveal they have little creative control over their game scripts.

-Foxtrot777d ago

They need to start letting people take inspiration from the comics, there's a ton of great stuff to take inspiration from.

phoenixwing775d ago

My beef is why even hire writers if you're just going to control the whole process. I'd be very upset as a writer if someone did that. A job is a job though.

DarXyde775d ago

Performative for optics, I would think.

It's like the US Congress holding a vote to "denounce the evils of socialism." It literally did absolutely nothing about anything and was a complete waste of everyone's time (and tax dollars—which is its own irony, by the way)

Dumbest thing in the world, but if you hire writers, it looks like you made a serious effort to make something great.

Do you remember when the original Suicide Squad movie was coming out? How much did we hear about Killer Croc's actor watching cannibal videos to get into character? Or even the "incredible lengths" Jared Leto went through to personify Joker on and off set?

It looks better when people think you're taking it seriously.

Sonic Colors on Nintendo DS - The Sister Release Also Worthy of a Remaster

The Wii release of 2010's Sonic Colors received a remake for modern consoles, but what about the Nintendo DS sister title?

ZeekQuattro941d ago

Back in the day you would get cases every now and then where the handheld version of a game was better. Chrono Trigger DS comes to mind. Not only did it have the cut-scenes from the PS1 release it also had new content that tied into Chrono Cross.
