Is this Why XBL is a 'Trainwreck' ?

Valve just released "The Sacrifice" DLC for free on the PC. To celebrate, they've just put both games on sale for a price (of each) that is cheaper than the DLC costs on Xbox live, which, by the way, isn't even out yet... Thanks to Microsoft's policies.

360 owners don't mind paying for free stuff.

Yi-Long5701d ago

... I'm a 360 owner.... but I haven't bought ANY DLC. It's bad enough that online costs money...

... which is why I'm strongly considering just buying a new powerful PC and hooking it up to my plasma, and from now on start using Steam, cause they seem to have alot of great deals going on very often.

I'm not really a PC-gamer, but the way console-gaming is going, with all the nickel-and-dime DLC-milking, I think I'll give a proper gaming PC a go.

WetN00dle695701d ago

Yep, STEAM has a SHITE load of deals!
I love using steam.

Pandamobile5701d ago

I like how you can get both Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 in a bundle for about the same price as the new DLC.

Gotta love Valve.

Yi-Long5701d ago

... I already have a PS3 as well.

HammockGames5701d ago

I've bought more stuff from them than I ever intended - including a ton of impulse buys, thanks to their fire sales.

With the holidays coming up, bank on seeing some sweet deals in the next couple months.

I game on every platform, but I can't justify paying for a lot of the stuff on XBL when I can get the same thing cheaper or free off Steam. Hell, a lot of the BASE (non-sale) prices are cheaper on Steam than XBL.

JackBNimble5701d ago (Edited 5701d ago )

Haven't you heard yet?..... PC gaming is DYING.

(sarcasm)

After PC gaming you may wounder why you ever bought a 360 to begin with.

FarEastOrient5700d ago

@JackBNimble

I'm about to do a $2000 upgrade to me main tower so that the machine can play Total War Shogun 2, Star Wars The Old Republic...

PC is expensive but I do the majority of my gaming on consoles, Mass Effect, Fable, Left for Dead, Bioshock are great on the PC and I've played Starcraft 2 on a 40" TV, what a beauty.

zagibu5700d ago

For 2000$, I can build at least three, if not four PCs capable of playing the mentioned games. PC can be expensive, but it doesn't have to.

FACTUAL evidence5701d ago

PS3 owners will show their appreciation, and also Sony would gladly take the free updates/DLC anytime.

George Sears5701d ago

Yeah because Sony doesn't care about money.

Shadow Flare5701d ago

Do you know why BBC iplayer is on the ps3 and wii but not on 360? It's because Sony and nintendo were willing to offer it for free as the BBC wanted but Microsoft wanted to add it to Gold membership only so only people who paid could use it

fossilfern5700d ago

Your half right ShadowFlare its also the fact we pay a TV license for the BBC thats why theres never adds on it or anything, so the BBC werent going to be associated with a payed for service because of the license fee. It wouldn't be fair

MRMagoo1235700d ago

Well here in Australia we have free tv channels on the ps3 too like ABC and channel 7 im pretty sure there is more in the works too did i mention its free plus we dont pay for tv licences here plus its free ......free let that sink in a bit then go play live lol

Dude, if you buy one game a month from STEAM compared to one game a month on a console at full price you would be saving anywhere between $240-$360 a year. That alone plus the price of a console would completely offset the "PC is more expensive" debate.

For example - Dead Rising 2 is $60 on the consoles and only $40 on the PC. If you buy from STEAM you don't even pay tax. AND at medium settings it is better looking than the console ports.

HBogard5701d ago

The PS3 will get Portal 2's free DLC for sure, thanks to Steamworks integration. :)

HeroXIV5701d ago

Really Microsoft should just loosen their laws a bit. Rockstar and VALVE are freaking complaining about it! These aren't indie devs... you piss these guys off you're losing out on millions in cash.

edhe5701d ago

Why are these companies blaming MS when it's their own fault that their not doing enough work to satisfy their fans on other platforms?

It's up to Valve to support their products, not MS.

Megaton5701d ago

Wat.

Microsoft forces Valve to charge for "updates" in the form of DLC. Epic has also complained about this.

radphil5701d ago (Edited 5701d ago )

How can Valve support their products when MS has stupid limits put upon the situation?...

It's been proven by many devs that MS forces a charge when it's over a certain size. Valve even stated themselves in their blogs, forums, etc that they want to make it free for console users. They tried to pull it off with The Passing, but MS cut them off from doing it.

edhe5701d ago

So then they should take the hit if they really "care about their consumers".

Instead of leaving other versions out of the loop and blaming someone else for their lack of support.

radphil5700d ago

You didn't even listen nor researched up on the situation then...

edhe5700d ago (Edited 5700d ago )

I know what the situation is and it's simply a meeting of egos.

If Valve really cared then they'd simply deal with it and give the people that *bought* their game on a different platform from their hallowed PC the support they *deserve* and paid for.

Cajun Chicken5701d ago

Because it should be FREE and there's honestly no addition selling point but the occasional exclusive online game like Halo.

Also, XBOX Live is home to the mass uninformed.

"Less reasons to pay everyday"

gillri5701d ago

Xbox live is the bets online service around

but Microsoft arent milkng me for DLC that should be free!!!

Rhythmattic5701d ago (Edited 5701d ago )

I'm guessing "bets" was a typing error, and you meant "Best"

As for the rest..... Maybe not a typing error, but surely, most would rather play online for free and (through choice) pay for DLC.

theEx1Le5700d ago

I think all dlc should be free, call me old fashioned but when I buy a game, I want the complete package I pay good money for and not half of whats on the disc or content that was "cut".

edhe5700d ago

Except when you buy a game that has post-release developments that were never on the disk and are separate work i take it.

Otherwise you're just wanting people to work for you for free.

OG Left 4 Dead Creator Announces He's Working On A New Multiplayer Shooter

Following Left 4 Dead's undying legacy, the developer of the game shares that a new likewise project is in the works.

ZycoFox258d ago

L4D had potential to be so much more. The issue was that the release of the second game just one year after the first added a decent amount of content which was much needed, then there was nothing except for a few small content updates spread far between.

This is one of the only games I can think of that benefits from a yearly release, or at least a yearly DLC so it doesn't split the player base.

The games just got too samey and lack content.. it's a shame they didn't keep up the pace, I know you can download new maps but it doesn't change the overall game or add new enemies etc.

-Foxtrot257d ago

Regardless of what Valve officially said they didn’t need to do a sequel that fast, things could have easily been added to the original overtime and the sad thing is the characters and atmosphere of the original was better than the sequel. I mean we went from the dark, grim city streets to the sunny south where we are hitting massive menacing tanks with frying pans.

I honestly believe Valve killed it because it was a Turtle Rock game at its core and Valve wanted it to be known as an Valve only IP moving forward

They even brought back the original survivors just to kill one of them off (even though in the original they were heading North to Canada)

JEECE257d ago

Lol L4D2 came out in 2009, and you are saying it should have been a 2020s type live service game. It's just a great game, it doesn't need battle passes and skins.

This attitude is why devs are afraid to make any multiplayer game that isn't a live service.

Jingsing257d ago (Edited 257d ago )

Also in these current economic times live services is just a no go when people are being more frugal with their purchasing power. I don't do any subscription services anymore which means I can't do multiplayer on a console even if I wanted too. Something the console manufacturers should think about if they want to get players to even try their online stuff.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies750d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken750d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing69751d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker751d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo751d ago (Edited 751d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing69751d ago (Edited 751d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos750d ago (Edited 750d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt750d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken750d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
