Castlevania's Greatest Hits

Game Pro: A look back at the best installments in Konami's 24-year-old Castlevania franchise in view of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow hitting PS3 and Xbox 360 this week.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is the first original Castlevania game for PS3 and Xbox 360, and while reviews are already hitting online, it remains to be seen how Lords will fare, both as a stand-alone game and in the context of the overall series. Since Castlevania's humble beginnings on the NES in 1987, the series' developed a loyal fan-base. The basic premise of each title is simple: as one of the whip-toting Belmont family members, you work your way into Dracula's castle and eventually take on Count Dracula himself. Of course, what happens in the interim always varies.

I think Castlevania SOTN should easily be #1. It was by far the best of all the Castlevania games to date. I didn't think the Xbox Castlevania was that bad either but it apparently wasn't better than Laminent.

People should really let go of SoTN, yes its a great game but Dawn of Sorrow and Order of ecclesia( including Portrait of ruins) are far better.

I woulnd't even say its something subjective, the DS games took what SoTN did and expanded on it.

Order of Ecclesia sucked. Only a fraction of the time was spent in Dracula's castle and the story was quite boring.

But yeah, Dawn of Sorrow is at par with SotN

Rondo of Blood is the best, I completely agree.

Order of Ecclessia had a cool game mechanic, it wasn't the best but it was still good at some level. The art was awesome though.

Even portrait of ruins is better than SoTN honestly, my only problem was the anime/manga looking art.

Richter Mode was the best. It reminded me of Rondo of Blood. Especially when I killed Behemoth!

That aside, PoR introduced the vampire killer too late in the game and we had to do with small useless weapons till then like grass whip and fire whip. It was a good game no doubt, but not at par with DoS or SotN.

8.9/10 for me. It's awesome, but it's just short of 9/10 :P

I hope a new 2D Castlevania releases for DS... but most likely we'll get it on 3DS.

Why does anybody consider SotN a Castlevania game?!It isn't at all the same. SotN was pretty much an RPG with side-scrolling action and was based LESS on skill and MORE on an object that you had to equip. That's like calling Zelda 2 Castlevania 5, it just isn't the same thing! The side-scrolling series ended after Dracula X/Rondo of Blood. The new Xbox version is a cool series reboot, though. much better than SotN. Don't get me wrong, SotN is a good game, but it isn't fantastic in any way shape or form. For me, Super Castlevania IV reigns supreme. Then the original, Dracula X, then 3, then 2. It annoys the crap out of me because people consider it the same genre. If I were to make a God of War game where Kratos just dances, people would love it, I swear.

SoTN was based of Simons Quest.
It took what castlevania 2 did and revamped it.

It’s more than about time it’s way overdue. Please make a 2D Castlevania with item/armor/weapon collectibles and transmog as this is the one series my wife will play but it has to have item collecting or she will skip it.

Lords of shadow 1 was such an amazing game and they dropped the ball with the sequel

"What is a name? A miserable little pile of letters."

Seriously, the games in the From Software's Soulsborne series are the best 3D Castlevania games we will ever get. From Bloodborne to Elden Ring, Konami will never approach that level of quality and give Castlevania its due respect. EVER! "Enough talk, call yourself a Belmont in the Character Creator, HAVE AT YOU!" Without question.

As for a new 2D entry? I mean, sure, why not? What the hell, right? It's about damn time indeed.

I hate being that guy, but I think it’s, “What is a man? A miserable pile of secrets.”

SimpleSlave581d ago

Um, actually mine is the original line in the Script. But Konami, being Konami, decided to change it to "What is a man? A miserable 'little' pile of secrets." I know, they ruined it...

So, while I know you hate to be that guy, you still missed the "little" part. It happens.

And, yeah, I know. You're welcome.👍

@SimpleSlave

LMAO… man, thanks for the laugh. 👍

SimpleSlave580d ago (Edited 580d ago )

I'm glad you enjoyed it. On the other hand, it seems like some ppl were so offended by my Line being so OP that they decided to side with Konami. But these are the same people that bought Contra: Rogue Corps Day One and convinced themselves it was the best Contra. So I take no offense.

It happens.

Might get a Castlevania pachinko machine.
