PS3 Exclusivity A "Natural Choice"

"Dead Nation, available exclusively on the PlayStation Network, was announced at Gamescom 2009 by Housemarque Games, the same developer of Super Stardust HD. Dead Nation is a top-down dual analog shooter that puts you in the shoes of a secluded survivor of a massive zombie virus. As the survivor you must progress through the missions mowing down as many zombies as possible while staying alive. Sounds interesting doesn't it? Well enough of Nick talking, lets see what the people behind the game have to say about Housemarque's latest project."

TheGamerAccess.com: Why do you think Housemarque Games decided to develop Dead Nation exclusively on the PlayStation 3?

Daimion Pinnock/Jenny Barbour: PS3 offers developers extensive tools to design and create the games they envision. With the great success of Super Stardust HD, it was a natural choice to bring this exclusive title to PSN.

"Sony has kicked off a scheme today which will see it match the development budget of self-published games in return for PlayStation exclusivity."

In a nutshell, paying independent devs for exclusivity.

edit @Mysterious disagree(s)

"So it shiver your timbers to hear that Sony are looking to expand their roster by offering cash for PSN games, with a scheme called "Pub Fund". It's aimed at enticing more developers - especially independent ones - to come up with original content for the PlayStation Network, by offering cold, hard cash."

"The Pub Fund will see Sony committing to match the development budget of any self-published game on the PlayStation Network in exchange for platform exclusivity"

"But now, Sony has declared a willingness to back up its aspirations for exclusive content with cold, hard cash. Its Pub Fund, just announced today, will match developer funding for exclusive games headed to the PSN. The first game to take advantage of this 50/50 funding scheme is Burn Zombie Burn!"

dangert125719d ago

oh well who cares as long as i get to play great games sure you didt complain when ms got the cheque book out

visualb5719d ago

thats what XBL has been doing for forever.

how else did you expect independent devs to work?
on their own fanboyish intuitions? as if a developer will develop on a platform merely because they have a preference to the company out of pure will.

imagination land!

El_Colombiano5719d ago

Making sure indie devs don't go bankrupt by taking a chance when making a good game is paying for exclusivity? Sony are just trying to support indie devs so that they can have a chance in this fierce market.

Yes it means that the games won't appear on other platforms, but what if the game bombed in sales but was still amazing? If they don't make the money back spent on the development then we won't have a sequel or another quality game. This is why I love Sony, they support games that other companies otherwise wouldn't.

hoops5719d ago (Edited 5719d ago )

You get disagrees even when you stated truth and backed it up with links quoting Sony execs and pro Sony PS3 SITES...
because many on N4G.COM want to live in fantasy land and beleive only MS pays for exclusive games. To them Sony would NEVER do this.
MGS4 and all those other 2nd and 3rd party exclusive games only on the PS3 were GIFTS given to Sony by those studios because to those game studios...making a return on thier investment is SO overrrated...they would rather just giv their games away...to Sony...LOL
Dude your post is dead on with facts straight from Sony's "mouth." People on this site dont want to have thier fantasy image of Sony broken...that Sony is NOT in this to make money like EVILLLLLL M$ and Nintendo...Sony is above it all :P

darthv725719d ago

Dragun6195719d ago (Edited 5719d ago )

I don't see what's wrong with Sony's Pub Fund. I mean The advantages far outweigh the cost.

- They get free Marketing support from Sony.
- Sony will match the budget of the Game.
- And exchange for PSN Exclusivity, Indie Devs get to keep the IP.
- Plus they get free access to Sony's Pyre Engine.

It's a great opportunity and a solid start for Indie developers.

nefertis5719d ago

@Dragun619 I agree with u.

Makidian5719d ago

That would make sense if their next game wasn't multiplatform, but I guess your theory works, in candy land.

RememberThe3575719d ago

The only reason that MS buying exclusive pissed me off was because I had a feeling that they would just turn out to be mediocre titles. Unfortunately most of them did. Getting mad a Sony for this makes no sense. It's basically the same thing as 2 party development. No one gets mad about Gears of War or Ratchet and Clank, so why would anyone care about this? It's good for both Sony and the indes.

zeddy5718d ago

square enix sold out just because they like microsoft not because of the horde of cash under their noses.

JohnSimpleTon5718d ago

You guys seem pretty insecure right now. The original poster didn't say a single thing that was negative. The only thing you should have gotten out of his links was an element to exclusivity choices that devs don't particularly like admit.

plenty a tool5718d ago

microsoft does it, and its bribery and terrible. sony does it, and the fanboys are giddy with delight and full of praise...pathetic.

multi-console owner here by the way

djreplay5718d ago

You realise that's self published games as in the developer publishes the game itself, of which there are about 3 on the Playstation store.

LinuxGuru5718d ago

lol Look at Mandatory_Install and his hard-on for Microsoft. We get it, pal. We get it.

hoops5719d ago (Edited 5719d ago )

Because Sony funded them...
That's how exclusives work.
Said company PAYS software company to make said game for said system.
Said company is not doing this out of its good will or heart to support a small indie company despite some utopian thinking by some members on this site.
This is a business plain and simple.
Sony, MS or Nintendo has a meeting with the software company who is pitiching their game and if they like it and think it will make THEM money, they pay for exclusive content or keep the entire game to their system.
It's business folks. MS and SOny and Nintendo has been doing this for years.
This stuff started with the Atari 2600 and Intellivison

lolzers5719d ago

No but, but, but it's because Sony cares!

They care!

They do, they really do!

Defective Bot5719d ago

Except when M$ funds games, they still end up going to the other consoles( GTAIV: EoLC, Tales Of Vesperia, Star Ocean 4, etc.). LOL

lolzers5719d ago

Like GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas? They were timed exclusives weren't they?

Defective Bot5719d ago

At least Sony never paid 50 mill for those games. ;)

RememberThe3575719d ago

The difference is that Sony didn't pay for the timed exclusivity of those GTA games.

coolbeans5718d ago

Do some research. Sony did pay for GTA timed exclusives.

Shepherd 2145718d ago

So its always been a problem and an embarrassment when MS pays devs off for exclusivity, but its not a big deal when Sony does it? In fact, its always been horrible when MS does it, but when Sony does, the answer is "At least i get to play great games".

Wat?

gamingdroid5718d ago

There is nothing natural about exclusivity this generation. Natural is to go multi-platform!

cliffbo5718d ago

are there any games on xbox live that look anywhere near as good as the psn games, ive looked at most games on xbox live and i can say that imo there is not any, thats not to say that there is not any good games on xbox live, just that visually and amount going on i am not impesssed most look like 80's arcade games little to no improvements which i dont want, i want games to improve visually ect.

monkey nuts5718d ago (Edited 5718d ago )

Shadow Complex and Omega 5 would be worth checking out. Also the reason some of the games on Live look like they're from the 80's is, well, because they actually are: Retro baby! Some of the games on the ps store however look like they've been made for the ps1 !!!???111..................

vhero5718d ago (Edited 5718d ago )

There is a HUGE differnece in paying a small amount to an indie developer for exclusivity for there PSN game and exclusive rights for a full non multi million pound/dollar/euro downloadable game like Blue Dragon though. So before people go comparing Sony to MS you gotta remember the difference. Sony help small time devs with that "sony pub fund" deal while MS only help themselves as you really think paying companys like Activision for exclusive rights really helps them?? You really think without that money Activision gonna go bust??

Don't You dare compare Sonys scheme to MS and there hand on trying to dominate the games market by buying it up!

gamingdroid5718d ago

Yeah, Sony's exclusivity is to help the gaming industry and MS' exclusivity is there to hurt the game industry.

Thank you for shedding light on the issue!

Shepherd 2145718d ago (Edited 5718d ago )

They are ALL multi-million dollar businesses and they are ALL in it for YOUR money. Dont think that this is some kind of good vs evil fantasy, its an industry and you'll realize that when you get older.

If Sony could own the entire gaming industry, they would. Sony are already money grabbing whores with their subsidiary film company, Columbia Pictures. They are just less obvious about it with their games division. Just a couple examples are how they ruined Spiderman 3 because of studio pressure, and every single phone in Casino Royale was an Ericsson and every single disk was a blu-ray and every single computer was a Vaio. Luckily Casino Royale was still great.

paintsville5719d ago

Well if you don't understand that they got a great big chunk of money from Sony for going exclusive then you need to study economics.

All_4_One5719d ago

What would economics have to do with it? It`s all about business practices.

lexington5719d ago

Well it's actually got everything to do with money. They don't sell they're game on other systems and Sony compensates them for it. So I guess paintsville and you are both right.

RememberThe3575719d ago (Edited 5719d ago )

Like lex said this has everything to do with money. Money transactions are economics.

visualb5719d ago

marketing is more like it

BYE5719d ago

Maybe they're just satisifed with the Sony relationship.

Money is always important, of course, but there are other factors that play a role, too.

DJnal055719d ago

take that all the 3d haters!

MGRogue20175719d ago (Edited 5719d ago )

It's because of the PS3's CELL processor. With the devs utilizing those SPEs, There can be hundreds of zombies on screen all at once.. aswell as lots of dynamic lights like the flash light & special effects :)

hoops5719d ago

LOLOOLOOLOLOL
You made me laugh with that one. Good one

Trroy5719d ago (Edited 5719d ago )

The funniest part about your post is that its exactly what the same dev said about making Super Stardust HD on the PS3: it was easier to animate a zillion things with all the SPUs (one of the tasks they stomp all over the 360 CPU at), and so they were glad to make their game exclusive on the PS3.

You get double funny bubs, because you sounded like you were making a joke. It'd be even funnier if you actually believed you were!

lolzers5719d ago

Um, Stardust was a game originally made in 1993. Let me say that again, 1993. It had a few bells and whistles added but essentially it was a game made in 1993. It was okay at the time, and is still enjoyable to play. But even with the bells and whistles it isn't a mind blowing game.

Long story short - it isn't a game to get hung up about.

Trroy5719d ago (Edited 5719d ago )

Who was talking about Stardust? Do you even know what Super Stardust HD is? Do you have any idea how much stuff is flying around the screen and blowing up at once in that game, in 3D and with a flawless framerate?

Any game made by these devs is, indeed, something to be excited about. They are good, good devs, and Super Stardust HD is probably one of the top 3 games on PSN.

lolzers5719d ago (Edited 5719d ago )

It's pretty much the same game, I played it on my Amiga years ago.

EDIT:Lol, they've been selling the same game for over 17 years pretty much. Haha, what talent they have.

What other games have they made? Tell me Trroy.

lolzers5719d ago

* Outland — PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade (2011)
* Dead Nation — PlayStation Network (2010)
* Super Stardust Portable — PlayStation Portable (2008)
* Golf: Tee It Up! — Xbox Live Arcade (2008)
* Super Stardust HD — PlayStation Network (2007)
* Transworld Snowboarding — Xbox (2002)
* Supreme Snowboarding (aka. Boarder Zone) — PC (1999)
* The Reap — PC (1997)
* Alien Incident — PC (1996)
* Super Stardust — PC (1996)
* Super Stardust — Amiga 1200, CD32 (1995)

That's what they've made. They're shit.

n4gno5719d ago

Super stardust is a marvelous game, please fanboys, try to only talk about sells or games you have played.

by the way trroy is absolutly right (like for flower : can't be done on 360)

monkey nuts5718d ago

The fact that as a small develope they've been releasing titles since 1995 would more or less contradict your opinion of them. No?

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

S2Killinit38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199238d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga38d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box39d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion38d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7239d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.
