Games Drive Medium Adoption

Beer + Videogames: As consumer technology grows ever more advanced, the shifts to newer and better platforms are happening with increased regularity. While it’s easy to count the rapid acceptance of these formats as little more than the sound of humanity’s steady march down the silicon laced road of progress, it appears the driving force at the heart of this cultural willingness to exchange our tapes for discs and our discs for bits has a familiar name: video games.

Bluray adoption....are there more games sold than movies? The price of players are dropping and the rereleases of popular titles on bluray for cheap (10-15$) I would say is what is driving the adoption of that format.

CD was already popular before games were pressed to them. Same with DVD. The coincidence of the DVD in the PS2 was a smart move even though there werent any dvd games to begin with. The advancements it offered over existing VHS was the real selling point.

The inclusion of the newer formats in a console is a nice convenience. Wonder what the next big thing will be and from who?

" So the next time you early adopters find yourself in the trenches of a format war, take a peek at what the big three are betting on. Chances are good that they’ve picked a winner."

It doesn't take a genius to bet on a winning console PS3 with Blu-Ray versus 360 with HD-DVD.

will you bet on these products too:
Kinect something Nintendo & Sony dismissed, Zune HD, Windows Phone 7, Windows 7 Tablet?

When you have iOS & Android?

Only problem there is hddvd really wasnt the 360's. I am actually glad they settled on a format for movies so quickly but kind of miffed that MS didnt keep hddvd for games. Looking at it back then vs now, they could have taken the risk and adopted it after it failed for movies.

The amount of units sold vs revamped hd units could have played out in their favor. The idea of a segmented userbase is possible but one that would have quickly been fixed.

Considering it was still early, they could have been able to turn around all those without hddvd into ones with and continued from there. It is pointless now and they missed their chance.

I see it like sony did with the original psp 1000. They made improvements to the 2000 that the 1000 would never have been able to have (video out, double memory and performance) and they did it while their user base was still small enough to take that risk of existing user to get upset.

MS had their chance but let it slip. I can think of how games like FF13 would have turned out if it were on a larger capacity format. Same for many other titles that have sacrificed content for the space allotted.
