Devil May Cry Reboot: Ninja Theory’s Chosen Path for Dante

Matt Randisi writes, "Easily one of the most talked about trailers revealed at this year’s Tokyo Game Show had to have been the controversial next installment into the Devil May Cry series. But wait, IS this the next installment? Something undeniably different seems to be up with this trailer. It appears to feature yet another newly designed character that players will be able to assume control of. We watch with great anticipation to see what this punk rock inspired potential protagonist brings to the table to deem him worthy to take over where Dante and Nero left off."

My chosen path when buying a game -- Simple, if it says Ninja Theory anywhere on the box I don't buy it.

StanLee5727d ago

My thing is, why reboot a franchise that has already seen a next gen iteration? Just go back to what DMC and DMC3 did well, look at how God of War 3 and Bayonetta have evolved the genre, build a better narrative than DMC4 and make fucking DMC5. How fucking hard can that be Capcom? And what happened to Capcom's NT framework engine that powered RE5? Why are they using UE3?!

DemiseofPandas5727d ago

Capcom doesn't let developers outside of their internal studios use their engine. So given that NT is just using UE3 since they used it for enslaved. This of course does not sound good for the gameplay...

Redempteur5727d ago

tsk there was no need for a reboot that i can agree ..if you needed another direction , you could take the "nero" path and change it a little ...

or they could just stay with the DANTE

DANTE past was beautifully explained in DMC3 ... i don't need this "dmc" there is nothing DMC in it

raztad5727d ago

I actually dont care about the new Dante, but it is the gameplay/UE3 usage what got me totally worried. StanLee is making some good points. I'm wondering exactly the same: WHY UE3? GOD NOOOO. There go the chances of the game to play at 60fps.

I dunno if this was a Capcom -wise decision (seeing they are making another H'n S based off Asian mythology), or was NT who decided to go that path. Either way I easily can see the game playing nothing like the smooth and crazy DMC.

gaffyh5727d ago

I don't have a problem with Ninja Theory personally. Heavenly Sword was great, especially in the story telling department, and Enslaved also looks good. However, DmC looks bad. I've been a big fan of DMC over the years and I've loved every game, even the ones that others hate, and then Capcom go ahead and Twilightify the main character!?!

Graphically it looks worse than DMC4 and the character looks nothing like Dante. So this might be the one DMC game that I do not play. In some ways I wish it fails so that Capcom and Ninja Theory eat some humble pie, but in other ways I hope it is successful because I don't want DMC to vanish from consoles.

Capcom makes some good games damnit, don' ruin your main character, where is Onimusha as well???

rockleex5727d ago (Edited 5727d ago )

Not some stuck up kid who thinks he's so cool because he smokes, and because his parents named him after the almighty Dante.

Street Fighter 4 was so successful because it went back to the roots.

Yet somehow the rest of Capcom still believes "westernizing" will save them instead. -_-"

It will be the death of the Japanese gaming industry! A new wave of developers and studios will have to step up their game and offer unique experiences in order to thrive.

Darrius Cole5727d ago

They said Reboot, and that is exactly what they are doing a complete and total reboot.

For them to give Dante black hair is an act of Ninja Theory taking ownership of the character,..so much so that if you are an old fan then you don't know if you will like the series. Ninja Theory is clearly changing everything completely from the ground up.

Redempteur5727d ago

black air is the start ... they said they want to tell you why he had silver hair .

ExplosionSauce5727d ago (Edited 5727d ago )

Are they not aware that we already know why he has silver hair?
His father had silver/white hair. And his mother had blonde hair.

Where did the black come from? Dyed it? Lame.

I only agree with you because they sound so damn pretentious.

jc485735728d ago

I ain't buying any of their products.

Tikicobra5727d ago

If you're a DMC fan, then you are. Say what you want, but this happens all the time. You say you're not going to buy it now, but you are. And you know it.

alphakennybody5727d ago

would you be saying the same if in the near future nin gives mario to a western dev and suddenly change him into fake italian-american and while they're at it shave his mustache?

x5exotic5727d ago

This shit isnt DMC...they just make it western style to get more money...raping the whole franchise...fuck capcom...they are really gay now...good luck with making fighting games and stuff...

fossilfern5727d ago

This happened with Metroid Prime everyone, including me, lashed out saying it wasnt a true Metroid game, its gonna turn into a shooter etc but when people get hold of this im sure their opinions will change. Me personally I dont mind this reboot.

-Judge_Fudge5727d ago

no if you are a DMC fan then you wouldnt touch this game for what there doing to our beloved baddass DANTE...this british pansy is not DANTE

Tikicobra5727d ago

Again, you say you won't buy it, but just wait and see. It's going to sell. And you're going to buy it. Deny it all you want, but it's true. And that's why I hate you all complaining this much.

Remember the Left 4 Dead 2 boycott?

Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.

-Foxtrot72d ago (Edited 72d ago )

I was just going to say this, their biggest and top rated game here is TLOU2 for PC….it’s embarrassing.

Even Ubisoft and EA are ahead

Kind of surprised Nintendo is pretty low aswell, their biggest game is also a rerelease with the Switch 2 version of TotK.

StoneColdCrazy72d ago

That’s what happens when you start shutting down your own studios and forget what actually made you matter in the industry in the first place. Sony used to set the standard — now it feels like they’ve lost that identity. And if they decide to walk away from the PC market too, that’s going to be another huge mistake — that platform is only growing, and ignoring it now would just put them even further behind.

1Victor72d ago

@christopher:” Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.”
.
Why single out Sony? Microsoft didn’t do any better than the year before 5th same as Sony 9th and they have acquired activision and other mayor titles that have boosted their score massively from a 9th and Sony a 4th the year before the acquisitions.
Sony does need to do better without a doubt and I do hope they do take note but not the note of buying publishers is the way to succeed.

Christopher72d ago

1. Microsoft didn't get worse.
2. Sony got way worse.
3. Because Sony needs the criticism the most considering their publishing output this generation has been propped up by last gen ports and third-party developers for the most part.

72d ago
thesoftware73072d ago

1Victor,

I don't wanna speak for Christopher, but like most of us we recognize that Sony's output this Gen has been way below their own standards.

Also Sony did buy a fair amount of Devs, I know you will say they were not publishers, and don't compare in size, but they had their fair share of Aquisitions, including the very well established Bungie.

The overall point is with their stellar first party track record of the past, they should not be going down, they are singled out because they are some of the best videogame devs/publisher on the planet...no matter what reasons we attribute to the situation, they are moving in the wrong direction... period.

KyRo71d ago

Its widely accept that Sony this generation has been underwhelming. We've had more peripheral releases, controller variants, PS5 accessories than games it feels like. The exclusives were also PS4 and what little output they have put exclusively on PS5 is nowhere near as memorable as what came in every generation before that.

This isn't a Sony hate post but anyone who's older and has been around for a long time gaming will agree that PS5 is by far Sony's worst generation. As much as Xbox is in the gutter, I pray the do bounce back in the hope we get Sony to wake up again.

darthv7271d ago (Edited 71d ago )

If you want to critique MS... you are doing so towards their management. The games output and their hardware have been much better than PS this gen. Sadly... people still hold a grudge against XB because of MS. Thankfully i am not that petty... I've been enjoying their games output in the drought of PS. And add in some NS1/2 games as well to balance things out. Things will change for me once Wolverine hits, and I start using my 5 more. That one I'm looking forward to. And the Marvel fighter... I'm not a GTA player so that has no bearing on my view of things.

Big part of that has been the live service push resulting in cancellation or flop after flop but when they put out the games their fans want we get amazing stuff like astro bot

Leadership really screwed the pooch trend chasing

Well I apologize I was wrong about not doing worse but my statement of Microsoft getting a boost still stand 🤷🏿

1Victor72d ago

Well OBSCURED unlike you I’m honorable enough to recognize when I’m wrong and apologize.
.
@ The software you know there’s no comparison between what Microsoft acquired and what Sony acquired that’s why you tried to get ahead of the conversation, yes we all know Sony can do better than what they have done this gen but they inhaled the poison GAS they thought would bring money for years but we make sure they got the message and quite a few games got cancelled you know as well a hit like that take years to be corrected and by now they hopefully will have taken steps away from the GAS and slowed their approach to them.

You will say anything when you are in denial that your hardware is dead and nobody wants your platform. Good luck with Helix because nobody will buy it.

But... but... the garbage-mongers always tell us that Square Enix is in trouble! 😂

Christopher72d ago

Square doesn't help that it fear mongers itself with ridiculous 'goals' that they can't reach and then they proclaim failure if they don't reach it. They're quite freaking profitable and people act like they're dying.

SimulationDaily72d ago (Edited 72d ago )

Keep in mind that these "proclamations" are usually third-hand bad translations from somedude who was at the investor conference, posted on Twitter, and picked up by press and youtubers like they were gold, and then when the official translation comes out, they're much softer statements, but at that point, the damage is done.

gold_drake72d ago

to be very fair

being number one on these things does not indicate how "well" their games do selling wise.

Capcom Insists It Won't Use AI-Generated Assets in Its Games, Will Harness Tech during Development

Capcom has clarified its current stance on generative AI in its videogames. The major Japanese publisher and developer behind popular series like Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Monster Hunter has revealed that while it doesn't use gen-AI assets in their games, it is exploring ways to use generative AI to streamline the game development process.

Chocoburger72d ago

Using Artificial Intelligence (more like Realistic Stupidity) art assets in your games is a great way to get people to boycott your product. We don't need that ugly, unsophisticated, generic, fake art in our games, good on CAPCOM for not using that garbage.

blacktiger72d ago

Naw you can't fool us, You work with Nvidia, that's a fact! And here you wanted to advertise but now look stupid!
