Dev Hint: PSP2 for Easter 2011‎

Following yesterday's news that UK first and third-party developers already have PSP2 dev kit in-house, we made some phone calls. Looks like the Sony handheld will be coming to the public in six months.

Due to Sony's understandable non-disclosure policy to development teams in receipt of pre-release hardware, actually getting a developer to admit to having such thing in-house proved difficult. We were informed - under rules of strict anonymity however - by one dev that, "I won't say a thing mate. Absolutely nothing."

Seems cut and dried? Not when a "No, we definitely don't have any PSP2 kit" would have covered it.

We were also informed by a developer, asked if when they looked around their studio they could see a PSP2 device of any kind, "I can't tell you. I'll be able to tell you why I can't tell you in six months though."

RyuStrife5693d ago

I'd say that's when Sony reveals PSP2 at GDC 2011 (Feb 28-March 04)

golsilva5693d ago

yea it could just be an agreement not to talk about it for 6 months. but i really hope sony has major titles and support for launch and beyond like the 3ds is getting right now

hikayu5693d ago

that comment makes more sense than the whole article up there .

Makidian5693d ago

There is absolutely no way Sony would launch the PSP2 at the same time as the 3DS with no press about it between now and then. Even if they announced at CES in January, they still wouldn't have enough time. The person reporting seriously misunderstood what the dev meant, but I would definitely say a Fall 2011 or Spring 2012 launch is on the cards because it's far enough outside of the launch of the 3DS and they can see the consumer reaction to the price and adjust accordingly.

Breathing down their necks with an awfully sharp stylus, waiting to strike.

El_Colombiano5693d ago

I honestly can't fathom what Sony can bring to the table to combat the 3DS. And that's coming from a person that never liked the DS even after owning one. Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Megaman Legends 3? That's three of my favorite series RIGHT THERE.

sashimi5693d ago (Edited 5693d ago )

Megaman Legend 3 can still make an appearance on the Psp2! must have hope!

shoddy5693d ago

They release when it ready.

FragGen5693d ago (Edited 5693d ago )

The 3DS's $250-300 price point will give them plenty of cushion. Only gizmo or DS freaks will do a day one on that device since, nintendo will certainly released a tweaked uni at a lower price point within a year to 18 months. You'd have to be a total neophile moron or a total road warrior to want an early unit.

I still have my original DS that looks like it was a prototype designed by one of their industrial engineering summer interns to remind me of this fact! :)

Also, just like the PSP1, the PSP2 will have it's own market, just because it's not likely to sell the same absolute numbers as 3DS won't make it a failure even though Americans think that's the case... Ferrari's don't sell in the numbers that Fords do; but no one calls the Ferrari a 'failure' because most people are capable of understanding that they serve different demographics.

gamingisnotacrime5692d ago

The 3DS with titles like MGS3, SF4, REs, Marios, full support from everywhere. 3d visuals, ewtc etc
this is a way better deal than an overpeiced apple icrap

I sense BS, but if its on Easter then perhaps maybe its a sign that Jesus approves of the PSP?

shotgun_ps35693d ago

It has a very good line up at launch with titles like Uncharted, LBP, Resistance, Killzone, Infamous and other Sony exclusives, as well as an extensive third party launch. I would also love for the PSP2 to have Sony Ericsson phone support but that's just pissing in the wind me thinks.

But this article is bullcrap. Sony will prob start talking about it in March just in time for full unveil at E3 then out by Christmas and, knowing Sony, costing £500/$800.

shotgun_ps35693d ago

take a joke. Even if it was £500 if it had that line up I'd still fork the money up somehow.

Ascalon945692d ago

KZ, LBP, and Resistance are already on the PSP. out all of those i think infamous would be the funnest

shotgun_ps35688d ago

Yea but imagine if it was launched with all the 1st party exclusives lined up. It would be Sony's first ever good console launch, again guys joke lol.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy854d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele4d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk4d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay4d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon1014d ago (Edited 4d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit4d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg3d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon1013d ago (Edited 3d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz1494d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle17d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit17d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog17d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog17d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad17d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_17d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage17d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda17d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
