Sucker Punch on inFamous 2

Plus the possibility of 3D and Cole's new new look.

I think it's only on PS3 because Sony owns the Intellectual Property (IP).

PirateThom5717d ago

Yeah, he mentioned that, he also goes on to mention how it's a small price to pay for the creative freedom Sony offer Sucker Punch.

Cloudberry5717d ago

.
Pretty much sums it up, lol.

The 3D possibility is cool.

I hope it also implemented MOVE...

Ravage275717d ago (Edited 5717d ago )

Sony is probably the best publisher to work for in the gaming industry. They give devs lots of creative freedom(e.g. Heavy Rain) and are EXTREMELY patient(e.g. GT5). Sony also seem to place lots of faith in their devs as Ted Price (and GG) can affirm.

"We have a great relationship with them. We love the PlayStation platform. I'm not lying when I tell you it's a really killer technological platform for us to work on. The support and marketing, and also their approach to us, to let us make the game we want to make, is really incredible. Our relationship with Sony has been just incredible, all through the Sly series and all through inFamous."

hay5717d ago

@movements: If you would read the article you would know it's exactly like that.

Bhai5717d ago

"Eurogamer: By saying that you mean you couldn't make it for the Xbox 360. Why do you say that?

Bruce Oberg: We're using so much more of the Cell processors now, I just don't know if other platforms have the horsepower to pull it off. At the end of inFamous 1 we were using 30 per cent of the Cell processors at any one time. Now we're creeping up over 50 and 60 per cent, because we know how to put things on to the Cell processors. I don't know where we'd go if we were on some other platform."

Obviously other platforms don't have that kind of horsepower, it has been proven over time :)
And besides, I just love reading some of your comments saying "They won't make such a taxing game on any other platform just because Sony owns the IP" haahahahah.
While its been proven time and time again, the 360 can't just handle this. I know some people who even said the same words for Uncharted 2, gow3 and even GT5... desperate, justifying bots :)!

sikbeta5717d ago

Sucker Punch is working with SONY since long ago and it'll continue this way....

inFAMOUS 2 FTFW!!!!

solideagle15717d ago

" We run our own fan forums and there was a pretty big consensus there - 16 pages of Cole complaints. Ultimately we don't make the game for ourselves. You've got to listen to the fans."
thanks

Silly Mammo5717d ago (Edited 5717d ago )

I like that Sucker Punch is being honest about the 50-60% usage and not coming out with a boastful statements like "We've pushed the PS3 to it ultimate limit with our game!!!"

It gives more credibility to Sucker Punch's answers and makes you believe its not just a bunch of "hot air" about their game and the Ps3's Cell processor.

Kudos Sucker Punch!

Elimin85717d ago

"The Naughty guys just know their craft inside and out." Just put a big smile on my face and melted my heart.... Just love when devs pass love n respect around...

nveenio5717d ago

I wish that Sony would buy Sucker Punch. inFamous is one of my favorite games of all time and in my top 5 this gen.

bviperz5717d ago

Happy developers make great games. Good on Sony.

darksied5716d ago

So true. I think it's awesome how the dev's are sharing their information. Must be nice to be a developer for the ps3, you always have the other game houses to fall back on if you need help or with ideas.

@Hay up above: I don't have to read an article to know Sony owns inFamous, God of War, Uncharted, GT5, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet And Clank, MAG, SOCOM, The Last Guardian, Resistance and all the other countless IPs the giant owns.

Maybe you do; but not me.

hay5717d ago

You do realize that underneath this lame title lies quite informative interview? But yeah, don't read it. Reading is bad. No need to be informed of other stuff beyond the article's title.

jack_burt0n5717d ago

Who the hell reported jneul for trolling, seriously this site is crazy!?!

xAlmostPro5717d ago

great interview :) the guy seemed pretty down to earth! and it clearly shows that the cell processor does make a huge difference when used right.. also every article like this with other developers that work exclusively with sony and the ps3 always say the same thing about sony giving them full freedom and time etc. thats probably another reason sony exclusives are so good :D

Consoldtobots5717d ago

@ bhai

the cell+rsx rendering pipeline and it's infinite configuration possibilities has been explained to death here, yet the fanboy cretons act like nothing was ever said and continue with their "3sixtaa is more powerrrful" mantra. We just ignore them at this point and let them wallow in their ignorance.

callahan095717d ago

I think it's funny movements got a handful of disagrees for his comment, even though it's right there in the article:

Eurogamer: Do you own the inFamous IP?

Bruce Oberg: We do not. It is owned by Sony.

units5717d ago

bubbles for you my good man

DigitalAnalog5717d ago

Bigger environments make for more exploration. I'm all for it.

-End statement

FACTUAL evidence5717d ago

"Bruce Oberg: From the engineering side it definitely is. It's easier. I used to work at Microsoft years ago, and I worked on Word – maybe you've heard of it? We made Windows and Mac versions. It was very complex. Being able to optimise everything for the Cell processor, for the RSX, gives us a lot more freedom to be creative artistically. We don't have to worry about testing for the limitations of some other platform. I don't think we could make this game, from a technical perspective, on any other console or any other platform."

Damn, this just makes me think that competition really is holding the PS3 back.

Christopher5717d ago (Edited 5717d ago )

Originally, that's the concept, that a game is on the PS3 only because Sony owns the IP. But, at the same time, you have to realize that these guys are only working on the PS3 titles because Sony gave them the freedom to create the IP and make of it the game they did. It's a give and take relationship and almost every single developer in a similar position goes on to work with Sony on more exclusive titles because of the freedom and help they are given.

I love the honesty in his answers. He's not saying that the PS3 is more powerful, he's saying that if they had to create the game on another platform they'd have to do everything different and go through the whole process again of figuring out how to use what they have to accomplish their tasks.

Also, yet another great development team who recognize the talent that Naughty Dog has.

TVippy5717d ago

He's repeating the same thing over and over again like a robot:
"They're giving us the freedom to make the game we want to make. That's a small price to pay for us. We're very happy being able to make the game we want to make."

raztad5717d ago

brainwashing? perhaps it is just the true.

OT: inFAMOUS 2 is looking brilliant. I hope when everything is said and done, the game be 60fps as Sucker is aiming to.

jneul5716d ago

funny because I don't see one x360 game that has 720p with MLAA that runs at 60fps, heck even if it runs at 30fps no x360 game can do that amount of crazy AA without dropping resolution, look at wake they had to drop the resolution just to get better AA that still is nowhere near MLAA

McWilly5716d ago (Edited 5716d ago )

Look at Dead rising they had to drop the resolution/disable vsync/lower texture quality because the PS3 couldn't handle 100's of zombies in such a large open environment. Rage runs at 720p and 60fps on 360 and MLAA is a custom built AA technique made just for PS3 due to its inability to cope well with the other AA techniques so you will not see it on 360 (MLAA is cpu intensive as apposed to GPU like the usual methods).

Move support has been rumored, but I'd like to see it in action.

wtf you mean creeping over 50 to 60 percent i thought you maxed it out im raging now

dosgrtr5717d ago

just wait till launch they should come pretty close to maxing it out

Trroy5717d ago (Edited 5717d ago )

Game Engines are not like a car engines. You have to write a mess of code to fit in a certain timeslice of a frame, and synchronize with other parts its dependant upon, and parts that depend upon it.

Using 100% of the SPUs (or any parallel cores, in any architecture) is basically impossible, in a game application, which has all sorts of sequential computation requirements. You can't cull objects in a scene, before figuring out where the camera is, and you can't figure out where the camera is without doing physics on the player, and you can't do physics on the player without analyzing the input for that frame, etc. etc. Get it?

If you want to use the SPUs during that time, they have to be doing some unrelated task, like sound processing, or MLAA, or 3D on the last frame's framebuffer, etc. It's like conducting a really frickin' complex orchestra.

That's why some devs aren't so good at it, and some devs are -- orchestrating an efficient game frame requires some serious planning and knowledge, and not every game team has the skills necessary.

Sony's 1st and 2nd party studios are exceptionally good at it, which is a testament to their skills as game devs. 60% is pretty damn good.

shadow27975716d ago

Trroy, while I'm sure you know what you're talking about, I believe Naughty Dog has said that they are using 98-100% of the SPUs all the time in Uncharted 2. It's in one of the BTS Documentaries, I believe. I think they said they wrote a program that calculated efficiencies, or something like that.

That said, a linear game and an open world game are two very different animals. So I can understand that Sucker Punch may not be able to achieve that. I just hope the inFamous 2 engine is optimized thoroughly.

Oh, and I'd like things to splash when they land in water. But that's kind of nitpicking on my part.

...I feel VERY confident that with the proper tweaking I could easily see myself using the Move or DS3 for any third person shooter. Killzone 3 will be my rubric for first person shooter with the move.

golsilva5717d ago

great interview. i think sony highly advises their exclusive titles to have 3d so infamous 2 may have it along with move. i think unless infamous 2 is a completet failure, which is looking to not be the case, then an infamous 3 is almost guaranteed. i wouldnt mind a new ip or a new sly game but all signs point to a full franchise.

I haven't played the first one yet; I think i'll DL tonight.

I want it too. Make it co-op as well.

-Foxtrot1096d ago

Yeah they had a lightning bolt in the shape of a question mark at the end of Infamous 2

They always went off the good ending for Cole so I think for Delsin it should be the bad ending

What he did in the bad ending, absorbing everyone’s powers, seemed like he was going to turn into something powerful.

Makes you feel like he could have been the real Beast and John was just an anomaly because of them messing with time

Sets up a Cole vs Delsin showdown

lukasmain1096d ago

How would fans feel about a reboot? You know to bring a new audience in? Not a good idea? Good idea?

anast1095d ago

Not a god idea. They let it sit for too long and the game hasn't been strong enough to carry itself all these years. There is so much other stuff out there right now.

masterfox1096d ago

Second Son was released in 2014 was an amazing game visually and gameplay wise, sometimes I play it again on the PS5 and seeing it run at 60 fps is something to behold(yes an almost 10 year old game), if you haven't done that on your PS5 try it you won't be disappointed, pure eye candy, a PS5 exclusive of Infamous would be amazing no doubt.

gold_drake1096d ago

meh, i want Cole to come back.

or maybe a reboot. with cole.

Older PlayStation games that we'd love to see on the PlayStation 5

From Xfire: "For a company with a three-decade-long history in gaming, Sony has done a crappy job at preserving its legacy. "

Flawlessmic1486d ago (Edited 1486d ago )

All the mgs games, all the ape escapes, silent hill 1-4, croc 1 and 2, legend of dragoon, tekken 3,tenshu, bushido blade, vagrant story, okami, ico, crash bash, gt4.

Thats just off the top of my head that i would play immediately, still so many more though that id love.

Welshy1486d ago

MGS, Silent Hill etc are no brainers, but you earned my thumbs up for our boi Croc. I talk about him all the time, it's an honour to find another man of culture.

Flawlessmic1485d ago (Edited 1485d ago )

Hahaha yea was one of my very first games i owned on ps1 as a child, great memories!!

Love to hear there other people out there that enjoyed the gem of a game that is croc 👌

RedDevils1485d ago (Edited 1485d ago )

Okami has HD version already. I want those Sly games though since PS3 and vita had it.

Flawlessmic1485d ago

Yea sly would be cool, i never got into those so would be a good opportunity for me to do so.

Hopefully we all get the ganes we are hoping for.

If the PC can emulate the PS3, then for sure the PS5 would be able to do same. but dose Sony want it?

Mr Logic2149d ago

If there was money in it, then Sony would do it. People can bitch and moan all they want, but even if every person on this site used BC, that would still be a tiny fraction of gamers. Almost nobody really uses BC.

DethWish2149d ago (Edited 2149d ago )

I think there would be money if they made PS3 games downloadable through PSNow and added a bunch more.
Edit: I would get it if MGS4 was available

Mr Logic2149d ago

@DethWish

That would be an emulator. You're not making any sense.

DethWish2148d ago

Mr Logic, really? If PS5 could emulate PS3 games (BC) and PSNow would let you download and play PS3 games locally instead of streaming (like it lets you download PS4 games), wouldn't that be awesome? PSNow has some really interesting PS3 games, but I'd prefer to play them locally

MadLad2148d ago

Really?
Remasters of popular games do extremely well. MS basically hands them out for free. If people didn't want to play older games, then why do remasters sell so well?

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 2148d ago
anonymousfan2149d ago

I honestly would probably never ever use it... But I still think it would be pretty neat. Its one of the few avantages PC still has on console that is complete backwards compatibility. But for all the work needed to implement this I doubt it would be worth Sony's time.

Melankolis2148d ago

In my opinion.
The difference is independent emulator developer can build any emulator as an experiment that will be perfected for years, maybe more than 10 years. During that time, expect many glitch, bugs, and updates. They can do that because they do not have any obligation towards PC users or whatsoever.

Fos Sony, once they announce PS5 will be able to play PS3 games, they have to make it safe and playable for users. They do not want the emulator cause bricks, glitch, heating up or anything to the consoles and get sued for that.

Harkins17212148d ago

The amount of work it would require sony for each game probably isn't worth it. Maybe after rpcs3 is done they can patent it and use it. That's the dream lol

Any ps3 owner has too own this masterpiece . My disk drive has just gone on my old super slim . So I bought the digital version no questions ask . If you have a ps3 own this masterpiece that’s all I can say . I replay it every year and still find loads of enjoyment . The last true metal gear in my opinion . V was good and gameplay amazing , but it’s just not a metal gear quality story wise .
