Sony Ericsson: bye bye Symbian, hello Android

"It’s not really much of a surprise but Sony Ericsson said it is not working on any more Symbian devices in the near future. The handset maker will likely focus on Android to help it claw its way back into the top rungs of the market.

In the meanwhile, it appears like Sony Ericsson will be making a huge bet on Android. We’ve heard strong rumors that the company will finally be making the PlayStation Phone with Android 3.0."

iOS has a head start however, I'm guessing Android will evolve at a faster rate.

Motorola5700d ago

iOS is good...for an MP3 player..

silvacrest5700d ago

you forgot to say "in my opinion"

Enate5700d ago

In the past months I have grown to love the Android/HTC combo. An the only thing I could think of loving more is my psp and android being one amazing device. Then it would truly but the only device I need anywhere. A much more powerful psp capable of near to almost on par PS3 graphics on a hand held scale. An for it to also have touchscreen capabilities on par or better then my current favorite phone the Android Incredible.

Personally when I saw the go I thought that could really be it, slide out buttons for when you need them. Close it to enable touch screen functionality and be able to switch between psn/xmb to the android interface brilliant. It just all seemed so perfect and with android the PSP2/Phone could be the greatest hand held device of all time.

Close_Second5700d ago

...the Android/HTC combo has a real chance of dethroning the iPhone over the next few years. Apple will always have a following but give consumers something that looks just as good, is not as locked down, features the functionality they're after for less then they will follow.

VileAndVicious5700d ago

Android isnt quite better than the iPhone yet, I would say its about on par with it. Very soon however IT WILL LEAVE APPLE IN THE DUST. Its just going to happen people.

But I think the SONY android merger is great. However SONY needs to really re-evaluate its Ericson division, they just make really sub par phones(Yeah X10 Im looking at you!).

Im really hoping that the PSP2 is a tablet instead of a phone which would make more sense.

Android FTW

Moentjers5699d ago

It's always easier to let Apple take the risk of innovation and testing the market and then copy the good parts afterwards

Apotheosize5700d ago

This thing could be a powerhouse, not only spec-wise but service wise as well. All those android apps, a web browser, texting, phone, a touch screen, movies, music, and to top it off PSn connectivity and a UMD drive for PSP games...

of course this means nothing if it doesnt exist...but I digress

kwyjibo5700d ago

A UMD drive? You can't be serious.

Liquid_Ocelot5700d ago

I'm guessing this would be more like the Sony Ericsson Aino. A smartphone with PS3/PSN connectivity, not meant to play games but to add more to the Sony.Believe experience I'm guessing. They(Sony) just want you to have all your [Sony] devices sync'd one with the other I'd say.

PSP2 must be something else. Then again, Sony always bring innovative things to the table so you(we) never know.

Ps: excuse my english

Apotheosize5700d ago

Haha yeah thats true. I was really describing the PSP2 more than this phone, but apparently it might have phone capabilities..so who knows

LOOK_AT_THIS_I5700d ago

all they would need is just a flash card reader, sony could start putting the games for the stores on the flash cards like they were selling with the movies and they have the media format right there. Get rid of those stupid ass little cartridges. You could put 10 media cards for 1 umd disc spacewise in a holder.

Perhaps they could include a larger hdd to allow the music and movies you download into the device and a media card slot so you then could swap the cards in/out if you purchase a physical media from the store.

I know its gonna alienate the first run psp crowd but you gotta adapt at some point and leave the past in the past.

Stealth20k5700d ago

Its not the psp 2. That has the tegra chip and has a physical medium.

This is just a smart phone

silvacrest5700d ago

i think Apotheosize description of the psphone is more likely then what Liquid_Ocelot mentioned

the sony ericcson aino already does the PSP/PS3 connectivity, making another device that does the same thing but with android OS would be a little nice but the potential for a proper PSPhone with actual PSP games on it would be a huge draw sony ericsson could use

i see little reason (battery aside) why a PSPhone couldnt have PSP games on it, it's only a psp in name if that happen, if anyone has a good reason why this wont work i would love to hear it

Stealth20k5700d ago

The psp 2 and the psphone are completely seperate. And have seperate rumors

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy857d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele6d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk6d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay6d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit6d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg6d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon1016d ago (Edited 6d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz1496d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle19d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit19d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog20d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog20d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad20d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_20d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage20d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda19d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
