Six Developers That Should Try Something Different

NXT Gamer's Edd gives us his rundown of the six developers that should try something different with their next game:

"Too often developers appear to get stuck in a rut, repeating themselves over and over again with endless sequels. They run out of innovative ideas, and there’s barely any inspired changes between each iteration. Sure, they progressively improve, but everyone’s bored by now. Time for some radical changes devs!"

Bungie and Santa Monica should be on that list. Not because those are bad devs, but because I would love to see what else they can do!

alphakennybody5721d ago

SSM tried something different once on the ps2, Kinetica and had very underwhelming response .

ChronoJoe5720d ago

Santa Monica have loads of Side Projects.

Warhawk
Fat Princess
Flow

Mostly assisting other developers, but they're certainly not afraid to get away from what they're familiar with.

dinkeldinkse5720d ago

Not because I think they are all bad(some are), but because I would like developers to do something different before just releasing sequels to franchises.

edd__5720d ago

I do definitely agree with this, but just a list of every developer wouldn't have been a very interesting read ;)

ChronoJoe5720d ago

I think this is silly.

To deny fans another Batman game for example, would be mad. So long as the new games really feel 'new' I have no problem with sequels.

frelyler5720d ago

Should absolutely be on that list, all they have done is Halo a FPS. All they have done is gone multi platform, that is not an indication of change. Also since they went to Activision who loves to whore out franchises do you really think they'll let them do anything other than a FPS, a FPS MMO does not count as something different either, only a better way to rip off the masses by Activision, this list is terrible and inaccurate.

edd__5720d ago

Bungie's next project is a completely new IP. Whether or not it's an FPS hasn't been announced yet.

Also, Halo isn't all they've done. They did the Marathon series, Myth 2 (RTS), Oni (third-person action), Abuse (shmup), Minotaur (dungeon crawler), Operation: Sandstorm (top-down shooter) Pathways into Darkness and more. All very different styles of games.

They've done a number of Halo games over the last decade sure, but it's only now that they're becoming over-saturated (imo at least). Which is probably why they're moving on to a new IP. They already are doing something different, so putting them on the list would be inaccurate.

oricon5720d ago

Polophony Digital should be on the list since they just made racing games.

jack_burt0n5720d ago

I think the sony studios should swap franchises, let Guerilla make heavenly sword 2, let Naughty Dog make a new Alundra, let Polyphony Digital make Uncharted 3, Team Ico make Ratchet and Clank, Santa Monica make ape escape.

The world would prob end but be interesting :P

R_aVe_N5720d ago

I want Naughty Dog to make an RPG. Santa Monica needs to make Heavenly Sword 2 just because you know it would rock I can careless they just made GOW3 lol. GG need to stick what they are doing now that experience has taught them a lot. Team ICO can do anything they want and I would buy it.

Unicron5720d ago

Bungie, Santa Monica, and Kojima Productions come to mind.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing24d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit24d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing24d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
