Pachter: Sony should copy 3DS

Sony has dropped the ball when it comes to portable entertainment and should copy the 3DS for the PSP2, insists industry analyst Michael Pachter.

So 60 million worldwide is dropping the ball?

The audience for the PSP and the DS are different. PSP is for people who want console games on the go. The DS is for pick up and play games.

PSP needs it's huge sellers, it needs it's Pokemon, Mario Kart, etc...

Why would it be emulating the DS by putting 3D in the PSP. Sony's whole PS3 campaign is 3D.

SilentNegotiator5771d ago (Edited 5771d ago )

Give it two control sticks, make it more powerful (No brainer, it should be better than its last system), don't add all of the unnecessary crap that they're throwing into the 3DS (accelerometer, gyroscope, camera, blah blah blah), no 3D screen, thus making it cheaper, thus giving it a huge chance of competing with the 3DS.

Nihilism5771d ago

I'm sure they will, they copy every other Nintendo invention.

Rumble, D-pad, cross platform compatibility, online gaming, motion control, all pioneered ON CONSOLES by nintendo. Yes nintendo had motion control first, it was the motion tracking gun attachments on NES, primitive, but that doesn't take anything away from it.

Tachyon_Nova5771d ago (Edited 5771d ago )

You should have put ON CONSOLES in brackets to avoid confusion, because the way that reads is that all of those features were pionered on consoles, which certainly isnt true for online gaming, computers had online gaming well before consoles. In terms of console online though, I believe Sega or Saturn really pushed it early on for consoles, not nintendo. Anyway, Sony were the first with inbuilt rumble, and discounting the powerglove, motion control gaming (eyetoy anyone).

Nihilism5771d ago (Edited 5771d ago )

You are a tool, I wrote on consoles in bold for that very reason. I think the context is quite specific if I had written they had "pioneered those features"( period ) then it would imply what you are suggesting, but I wrote 'on consoles', if you can't understand it then it is a shortfall in your understanding of the English language rather than a fault in my comment.

Also: Nintendo had online gaming with the SNES in Japan, you seem to be seriously misinformed. Sony also were not the first with rumble inbuilt. Sony weren't even making consoles when nintendo had motion control on the NES.

SilentNegotiator5771d ago (Edited 5771d ago )

-"Rumble"
Big Deal.

-"D-pad"
Ok, sure.

-"online gaming"
Who cares who was there first if Wii is still using friend code crap?

-"motion control"
a-HEM. It's common knowledge by now that Sony was working on the Move/camera technology around the same time as Nintendo with the wii.
And if you're talking about the power glove...NO ONE CARES ABOUT THAT POS.
"motion tracking gun attachments"
Those weren't motion tracking based...

RageAgainstTheMShine5771d ago (Edited 5771d ago )

yeah, try
true 1:1 motion tracking
sub millimeter precision in 3D space
augmented reality game play,
full 3D body and body parts tracking
voice command
voice recognition
facial recognition
facial emotion recognition
video chat
.... try these on your precious Wii

Oh BTW no one could have enjoyed SNES with out Sony's sound chip.
Nintendo did it but Sony does it BETTER.

Do your home work first.

FragGen5771d ago (Edited 5771d ago )

They didn't invent ANY of the stuff you've cited the 3DS tech included (hint: it's manufactured and developed by another big Japanese company). So: If mass marketing existing technology using economies of scale is original then yeah, Nintendo is original. Great. So they're original. Sweet. Big f*cking whoop so is every other manufacturer on the planet.

Their software and GPU hardware still sucks like it's 1999 because they insist on selling gimmicky hardware technology in the toy store/retail price point (so they can have motion controls but they can't have decent gfx AND motion controls if they want it all under $200 @ toys r us). Our handheld has a weak GPU, almost no memory/storage, barely enough CPU to do multimedia (but that's okay because we don't have storage for it anyway) but it has 2displays and a touch screen and costs $129!

And they haven't developed a new software ip that didn't involve Mario and the gang in I don't know how freaking long. Seriously. Super Mario World was awesome but Mario is DONE as far as I'm concerned.

Owning only Nintendo gaming hardware would be like owning a DVD player that could only play Disney movies but had a really cool remote control.

Sometimes I'm in the mood for the grown up shit. You feel me?

He does know that the 3D tech only works at lower resolutions and color counts, right? Sony would have to back pedal on their technology to get it to work with Nintendo's 3D tech.

Tachyon_Nova5770d ago

That's not really true, it's just that the glasses less screens haven't been developed in high res yet. By the time psp2 is out, it will be available in say iPhone 4 resolution

xskipperx825772d ago

I love the disagrees you are getting. lol

AndrewRyan5772d ago

They are so different! 2 different controllers, one with an analog stick and one with a motion device and buttons! I don't see why people think they are the same! /sarcasm

Imperator5772d ago

Isn't kinect just a better (if at all) version of the Eyetoy/PSeye that's been around for the last 6 or 7 years? Honestly, Everything I've seen on Kinect, I've seen done on the Eyetoy.

BYE5772d ago (Edited 5772d ago )

This has been discussed so many times.

The Move was in development since way before the Wiimote was revealed.

ingiomar5772d ago

i hope your being sarcastic

Darkfocus5772d ago

it's true but you can bet that it didn't have nearly the amount of funding poured into it that it received after the wii became successful and probably wouldn't have even been released.

pain777pas5772d ago

Darkfocus is right on the money here and we all can appreciate why Harrison was so angry because this stuff was already being done and no funding for the vision. This gen just got much more interesting though.

house5772d ago (Edited 5772d ago )

3d should just stay away from the psp2 very far just add the second analog stick and we will be happy gamers (not to mention stronger gpu and cpu)

and yes ceekay is right sony had the move rights before the wii was even a thought so it really was not a copy

mrmcygan5772d ago

I think 3D is great for a handheld like the 3DS but the screen and the tech is to expensive, which means they would have to put weaker hardware in to keep cost down, you can already see that happening with the graphics of the 3DS, yes I know they are better then the PSP, but seriously a 15-20% difference is really weak seeing how the PSP was launched in 2004-2005. So if Sony does announce a PSP2, I would much rather want a system with great graphics then a system with OK graphics that are in 3D.

No trying to start a console war

Mista T5772d ago

Sony should make it better than 3ds, maybe make the psp the first oled handheld and also have 3d. I have no Idea how much that would cost though, so someone should reply

EYEamNUMBER15772d ago

well you can always take out that second mortgage to get one? lol

Nihilism5771d ago

I can see it now

Kaz: "People will want a PSP2 so much they will take out a second mortgage to get one"

To paraphrase a famous quote by one of the most delusional people alive.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8575d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele75d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk75d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay75d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10176d ago (Edited 76d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit75d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg75d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10175d ago (Edited 75d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14975d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle88d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit88d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog89d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog88d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad89d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_89d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage89d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda88d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
