Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are being investigated in Europe for "anti-competitive" business practices because of the studios choosing one side over the other. If Blu-ray can't win this format war before EU conclude its investigation, then I think EU will decide that both camps are in fact using anti-competitive practices by releasing videos in one format but not the other, and then Disney, Fox, Universal, and Paramount will have to release videos in both HD media. After that, the US investigation will follow the EU investigation.

So, Blu-ray will have to win this war before EU completes its investigation. Otherwise, this war will really drag on for very long, which will severely hurts PS3 and Blu-ray altogether.

However, the rest of Dreamworks, Viacom/Paramount's world... those will be HD DVD exclusive for the next few years at least

More importantly, perhaps the execs realized it takes more than a video game console to win a format war. Stand alone player sales for Blu-Ray are far behind HD-DVD.

It only makes sense that the HD movie minded consumer would support HD content since they have stand alone players. The problem with that logic is that they're ignoring the massive amounts of PS3s out there in comparison to standalone HD-DVD AND Blu-Ray players. If the dedicated were unable to outpace the casual in sales of the "300" HD movie, then a light should be going off in someones head.

Casual consumers is what drives markets like these, and even though it's still in it's infancy, we're already seeing the casual HD movie viewers who own PS3s contribute to Blu-Rays current dominance.

Like I said though, they are right, and I'd be willing ot bet that if there were as little as one third the amount of HD-DVD players in relation to PS3s, then HD-DVD might be winning, and we'd see a bit more division in studio support.

In short, I think this is just PR, and it's about a contract more so than anything else. If they really believed that HD-DVD was the way to go, the agreement would go beyond the end of next year. Call me crazy, but I still don't think HD media will be mainstream enough to make a huge impact by this time next year, so I think it's more of a strategy to pocket a few quick bucks while they can. I expect every and any major HD-DVD release from Paramount/Dreamworks to show up on Blu-Ray by from next Fall and throughout Q1 '09.

Michael Bay has just posted a blog and announced that Transformers will be HD-DVD exclusive. Someone reported the news, but all the Sony fanboys went on the defensive and falsely reported it as a "duplicate" to suppress negative Blu-ray news.

It's a crime to force consumers to purchase two seperate DVD players to watch your favorite movies in High Def!

I still want to believe that digital distribution is the future and that disk formats will be there for entusiasts and movie collectors.

I download movies all the time now. It's easy and cheaper than renting DVD's from Blockbuster or Hollywood Video.

Paramount is basing their choice on HDDVD versus Bluray "standalone players". Which is what they should do. These people will definately be buying HD movies.

Nobody knows who bought a PS3 for movies. Sony is only using the PS3 fanbase to win the format war. Less than 13% of people watch movies on a console. Get it.

A video games console is no place for a format war. Sony just tried to cheat Toshiba. That is why Toshiba is countering this BS forced push with their laptops. Who knows how many people will watch movies on their laptops just like the PS3.

Sony knew they stood no chance to win the format war without the PS3. With Bluray coming out a year later and being twice the price of HDDVD. Sony pretty much started the whole format war. We could all have HDDVDs to watch right now with all the movies. Sony just got too greedy.

And what happens when the price of the blu-ray standalone players reach the price of the hd-dvd players? Yep, still more blu-ray studio support so I'm guessing you know what happens.

Did Sony ever make big money exclusive movie deals or was it just on technological merit. Far as I know, Sony doesn't like doing those kinds of deals unless they are going to purchase it themselves (like they did with Killzone).

To be honest if Sony hasn't done this corner market thing, I believe the HD DVD camp (as well as Paramount and perhaps Universal) might be treading water a bit to long with these exclusive deals. In other words, Paramount was supporting Blu-ray but because of a money deal switched to HD DVD even though consumers where favoring Blu-ray more and more.

I believe if anything is going on HD DVD guys are more likely to get more heat than the Blu-ray Camp. I'm not suggesting Blu-ray is totally innocent but I do think somebody should step in before this does turn into a big ugly bidding War (which we will lose because we all will have to buy two types of players regardless)

Paramount was a big blow for Blu-ray because it has a decent lineup and balances the Sony/Disney factor for Blu-ray.

Forcing companies isn't going to do any good unless some kind of Punishing fine system is put in place to make sure companies that are forced to support both format by law don't purposely put out crap on format and better on another.

Remember HD DVD supporters, having to force dual support also makes Blu-ray Supporters have to dual release on HD DVD as well.

I believe it is good for the market to have such a law. Maybe it will force the Industry to work on a standard format rather than going to the trouble of both.

Of course the Movie industry could just flip everybody the finger for HD storage and purposely support the next gen format Holographic disc technology and then only consumers able to by HD will be rich people since the Players will no doubt be in the $1000 range.

Then we be stuck with all these small useless HD players because the industry decided to just stop with the two formats instead of having to support two formats.

Sounds like we are screwed either way but I believe one standard is the way to go. If the Movie Industry can't decide and they leave it up to us then by law they shouldn't be able to corner the market by forcing it down our throats. In other words, they will have to support both formats period.

Another way is create some kind of technology Consortium that is put together by the Movie Studios. Technology Giants would have to put their formats up to a vote and there has to be a clear decisive victory. Whoever wins that vote will be the "one" standard and no other allowed. This can all be done without much public affair and if a companies flaunt their technology before a decisive factor (to try to make the Consortium look bad) can be used as a mark against the format. This way the public is not tricked, confused, lied to. All the public will know is that the next new HD storage format is out.

Capitalism is sometimes useful and sometimes it isn't. This is one the times where it fails to help the consumer. Now remember, I'm not saying to force the industry to adopt a standard, I'm just saying that if they don't be prepared to be forced to support BOTH.

To help make sure that happens, make sure sleazy monopolistic practices (like Paramount forcing its customers to choose a format just for some lousy cash).

Actually, my whole support for Blu-ray was based on what look like over 80% support for Blu-ray. Now, with sleazy deals under the table like this I may just by Blu-ray just to piss off Paramount. If the Blu-ray camp is doing these sleazy deals too then maybe I'll just stick to upscaled DVDs since I've never owned an HD player I never no what I'm missing. By the time I do, some other form of Distribution may come about I won't have to support either of them.

What Universal and Paramount dont realise, and Warner for that matter, is they are hurting the HD movie industry as a whole. What's it only like 5% of total movies sold? Once one format dies and the fence sitters start jumping in that might climb to 30 or even 40%. These companys are prolonging the war the their own short term benefit but they are harming themselves the industry and us in the long run.

I guess it just means Paramount wont be getting any more money off me, and trust me I love spending. I'm a good little consumer, but theres no way I'm supporting another format. Transformers wasn't THAT good.

Howard Stringer (Sony CEO) publicly attacked Steve Jobs (CEO/Chairman of Apple and Pixar) over iPod and iPhone, and criticized that Jobs is greedy (and more.) Stringer actually made the personal attack in a panel in front of other big guns (Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Sergey Brin of Google, etc.) That's just very "not cool". I almost fell out of my chair when I read about it -- how could Sony possible attack Steve Jobs when Apple/Pixar is a crucial ally in the format war? But Sony let its arrogance went over its head again.

Needless to say, soon everyone in the industry was talking about it. I could imagine Jobs was not too please and "expected" Stinger to issue an apology, but that has not happened. Apparently Stringer's big ego is more important than losing support from Apple/Pixar. Unfortunately for Stringer, Jobs has a big ego too. So now Pixar is pushing Disney to go neutral on the format war. This is gonna get ugly.

Anyway, if Pixar does decide to drop Blu-ray exclusivity on its own without (or with) Disney, Sony can only blame itself for having a big mouth and an intolerably arrogant culture and attitude. Hubris will be the death of Sony.

Basing their choice on standalone players is PR rubbish, and you would do well to train your eyes and ears to spot things like that. Like Akira said, MONEY TALKS, and since HD media isn't mainstream yet, a cool 150 million is probably more than they would make with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD together over the course of the agreement. It's damn good business in my opinion, and although I only have a Blu-Ray player and do WANT transformers, I won't be a fanboy and fault this company, because I think it's a great business move to be honest.

The fact of the matter is HD media isn't making a dent right now in the market, the two formats really are only competing with one another. With that in mind, it's beneficial to EVERYONE for them to make such a move. HD-DVD gets their name plastered all over anything Paramount, Paramount gets their money, and Blu-Ray will more than likely get all of the important releases after 16 months. Since this stuff has yet to break into the mainstream, it only benefits everyone IMO.

WHO CARES. Again, good business, it's working, and it benefits the consumer. Think about it for a minute. The only, and I mean ONLY tangible differences between the formats is space and studio support. Thats it. Same codecs, same size discs, everything. Should cell phone manufacturers stop including email clients, cameras, and ringtones as part of their services? First of all, no we couldn't because the studios spoke when they aligned themselves with the BLU RAY DISC ASSOCIATION. I have a PS3 and an elite 360 with the HD DVD add-on. I have 35 HD DVD movies, and 9 Blu-Ray movies. I can see what is goin to happen because I am not stuck on Blu-Ray. Open your eyes folks - Sony has never won a new format war and they won't win this one. HD DVD players will soon surpass all Blu-Ray players, including PS3s.

My mom will not buy a PS3 to watch Blu-Ray movies. She will go buy a standalone player just like every other mom in the world - they don't need/want a PS3. Same goes for my grandparents and anyone buying someone a gift. They want an affordable standalone... unfortunately, this is where Blu-Ray will meet it's demise. They can't compete. you can not "Trojan Horse" a stand alone player into someone's home. Unless Sony starts putting Blu-Ray players into coffee pots, sofas, and microwaves, they will lose the battle of affordability. HD DVD will rise, and it will come out on top. I have decided to quit buying Blu-Ray movies all together after this announcement - this is a turning of the tide. No fanboyish posts, or news articles can do as much damage as something like this.

I am making a prediciton - Blockbuster Video will soon announce they will be renting HD DVD movies sometime within the next 5 months. this will be in light of HD DVD player sales skyrocketing thanks to advertising by the HD DVD camp. By the way, Transformers was 10X better than Spider Man 3. I don't care what they raked in at the box office. I saw both in the theatre. That doesn't mean I'll buy them to watch at my home. Spider Man 3 left me feeling ripped off. Transformers made me leave in absolute awe. I will only buy Transformers, not Spider Man 3.

Sony's been acting like a big arrogant ba$tard for quite a few years and trying to force their proprietory (useless) technology down consumers throats. FFS my f(king 50" SONY HDTV is hardly 2 years old but has a f(king memory stick slot and no HDMI or VGA. THey somehow thought they could again fool people into blindly buying their overhyped console this gen as well. So they put in BD just so that they turn their poorly engineered console into a cheap BD player and push it as trojon games console. Had they included an HD drive or even a DVD drive in their PS3 there would not have been the format war cuz already HD-DVD standard was ready and moving along well. Plus the Ps3 would have been out sooner and there might have been some games released by now ;)
