Everything they've said was right it makes no sense for them to jump ship like that, the price for BLU-RAY PLAYERS will go down at the end of the year and BLU-RAY out sells HD-DVD by 2 to 1. But its whatever I guess with time things will change yet again, but SONY has a great advantage simply because there are more PS3's out there then HD-DVD's so there's more sells going to them.

I had to check the prices earlier, and though I wasn't bargan hunting, I saw bluray players about $300-400 more than HD DVD players.

HD DVD is within reach of the mass market, but bluray is not, which means unless bluray can counter, fast, it will lose.

Sony has major problems now. It can still win, but it's going to be hard for them now. All the forcing Sony loyalists to buy bluray with their PS3 may end up meanining nothing.

The problem with this deal is that the HD movie market is constantly expanding, and there’s no telling how fast Blu-ray sales will rocket past HD-DVD. Within a year, Blu-ray has already overtaken its rival format, and current estimations show that the sales gap will widen significantly as Playstation 3’s installed base grows and as standalone Blu-ray players become more and more popular.

Paramount and Universal stand to lose much more potential revenue than they are being compensated for, and it’s unfortunate that Microsoft and Toshiba are acting so desperately to save this ailing format.

August 15, 2007 - On November 6, 2007, Buena Vista Home Entertainment will release Cars on Blu-ray. We don't mean to brag, but we just want to say that we demanded a Blu-ray release of this in the first part of our "50 DVDs We Want on High-Def!" article, and it's like Pixar heard our request and made it happen, Cap'n. The Pixar flick is bound to set the standard for all HD releases on either platform, and will more than likely be a must-own for any Blu-ray player owner. It'll have exclusive Blu-ray-only special features created specifically for the BD using the latest BD-Java enhanced technology. It will be available for the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) of $34.99

By the end of the year the price will even out. And as far as the sells of HD-DVD movies are really bad right now, in order to win this format they have to sell the movies and thats where they are having a lot of trouble with. BLU-RAY is out selling HD-DVD because of the PS3, there will be more then twice the amount of PS3 owners out there over HD-DVD PLAYERS. Right now there are almost 5 million PS3 owners world wide after this month and most of those owners are buying BLU-RAY movies and by the end of the year there should be around 6 to 7 million PS3 owners world wide. So I want to know how many HD-DVD PLAYERS do people own world wide, can anyone please tell me so I can compare them and make a forecast for the end of this year.

You think PS3 owners would buy a standalone Blu-ray player when they own one already, they're not that gullible, I certainly would not it's either or watch Blu-ray or play games and play regular DVD movies too.

You'd think Sony is a sports team the way the trash talking is spread around here. Sony is a CORPORATION who cares only for your mighty dollar. I hope HD-DVD wins simply because Sony decided to shove Blu-ray down my throat. Before you flame me, consider: Who would win if Sony let the consumer choose the optional Blu-ray drive like Microsoft did with HDDVD?

i would have said otherwise a few days ago, but now, it's almost totally certain that the BDA is going to counter the price issue.

Blu Ray already has the sales and retail support advantage, not to mention studio support is still strong for *KEY franchises (ie, Spider-Man, X-Men, Pirates of the Carribean, etc), but i imagine Sony may speed up plans to release some of their catalog titles, and maybe another free movie deal with newly purchased Blu Ray players.

i have to say that competition is a good thing, generally, but this was just a boneheaded move by Paramount.

ah well, in the end, this will simply drive down BD player prices more (maybe even the PS3 also; though not to $300, it *IS a games machine also, afterall. i'd expect another, $50 price drop by years end, bringing the PS3 to the cost of a X Box 360 Elite, $450).

So why is it so hard for both to come to an agreement? When it comes to joe public who wants to buy a movie what is it about bd or hd to offer him that he can't get on dvd? Clarity??? Sound???? Unless you got the goods to watch them correctly, both formats fail.

I have been trying to figure out which way Disney wants to go because on one hand you got br movies with high res picture and sound touting the NEED for a high capacity disc. on the other hand you have disney with hd movies for download with high res picture and sound coming in at just over the size of a std dvd-r.

The more competition you give blue ray regarding price, the quicker the price cuts for the PS3. 60% of the Blue Ray players are PS3 owners. If this turns into a price battle, it will only help us consumers in affording a PS3. Keep em coming boys. If you can't see this, you should be ashamed to call yourselves executives. This is why Sony strategically placed Blu ray in every PS3 system. A resolution to space contraints for a game is just secondary to the profits made on movie sales + being the benefactor of the new standard.

I thought it was permanant. But we all know paramount started of as hd-dvd then they jumped to neutral and now they are going back to hd-dvd.

Honestly out of my 22 Bd's discs i purchased 3 of them and returned 2 of them. Italian job (quality was OK and they advertised it having dts sound when it did not have it), black snake moan (skipped in scene, so i returned it and it skipped again in the same scene), mission impossible 3 (supposed to be the best quality from paramount, looks only GOOD imo the blacks are wayyyyyy too dark, and it is not as crisp as casino royale, crank, and final fantasy).

So there you have it... i really wanted transformers but I guess it can wait till 16 months after.

The BDA, Sony, and you Sony Sausage smugglers all prematurely claimed victory.

The video quality is the same as BD, just that BD tends to have uncompressed sound.

Value and potential, last I seen their BD sales were higher than their HD-dvd sales.

150 million dollars in marketing and research development I would understand, it justs seems money was handed over as a bribe.

A lot of people complain about the video quality of Blu-ray but there is a very good reason why those movies suck in picture quality. Paramount (and some Warner Bros. movies) always gave Blu-ray the lower quality video codecs while giving HD-DVD the better one. Both formats use the same codecs but Paramount SABATOGED Blu-ray even though more Paramount movies were sold on Blu-ray.

Paramount said that they were giving blu-ray better codecs and more features for all the new movies but we won't be seeing those new movies anymore because Paramount accepted cash from the failing format (HD-DVD) that pisses their pants every time they read about Blu-ray out selling HD-DVD. This format war was almost over but Paramount decided to fuel it a bit longer.

Fox and Disney stuck with Blu-ray beacuse of the storage but primarily because of the upcoming security feature called BD+ that combats piracy better and is not available to HD-DVD at all. the most paramount would make is 12,000,000 thats if they sold a movie every hd dvd owner which we all know aint happening. not saying this is all they will make but if a single movie of there had %100 penetration this is all the would make.
