Red Dead Redemption -- Why Open World Narratives Fail

An 'almost review' by the ITBrog.com's Isaiah taylor, he talks about how difficult it is to an open world game of this nature. Red Dead Redemption stands as Rockstar Games best blend of a intriguing narrative and an open world adventure. Unfortunately, open world games and meaty plots don't mix well.

Trroy5718d ago (Edited 5718d ago )

Basically the article's only point is that the repetition of non-plot related gameplay breaks the story, because you invest too much of your own personality into the character?

I guess I kind of see the story as an entertaining way to change the gameplay, not as the ultimate game goal.

If he wants a JRPG, he should play one. Although the sheer amount of killing JRPG characters do is often pretty contrary to their supposedly peaceful/good character natures.

KingKiff5718d ago (Edited 5718d ago )

Title should read "how gaming journo's fail"

Crap article...

Bboy_Izilla5718d ago

I promise to try better next time. Really...I will.

KingKiff5718d ago

OK it wasn't that bad lol...

I juts dislike opinion pieces.

rockleex5717d ago

Its true, their narratives suck.

Like with Oblivion, the first 30 minutes were awesome.

Then the rest of the game were just pointless sidequests. The main missions only consisted of "shut this gate of Oblivion, then shut that gate of Oblivion".

RDR and GTA are victims of this too.

Its not the open world genre's fault. Its the fault of the developers for thinking they can just throw a bunch of hours of pointless gameplay in with 5 hours of worthy gameplay and think we'll eat it up.

And SO MANY people eat it up without thinking, "wait, this is pointless to the purpose of the game".

TrailerParkSupervisr5718d ago

...is people write opinion pieces then follow their story to other websites to read the responses then start defending themselves....er, you can have an opinion about a game but we cannot have one on your article? Narcissism much?

Bboy_Izilla5718d ago

I'm narcissistic because I wrote an article that I feel passionately about? You're free to comment just as I am correct?

Bboy_Izilla5718d ago

One of many points I make in the article is that no matter how many times we try and perfect this 'open world narrative' game design you run into the same issues the predecessors did. Staleness of story paralyzing sidequests.

wollie5717d ago

I just wanna say that you put my feelings into worlds perfectly! RDR was a great game, but there were just to many times when i was like ok John marston would never do this, why is he helping these people instead of shooting/ignoring them. I feel like this about every open world game. Devs create these awesome worlds for us to explore and then fill it with meaningless stuff for us to do.

coolbeans5718d ago

this idea gets into the heads of those who still would've wanted Alan Wake to be open-world. Fluid story takes a backseat in open-world games UNLESS an innovation comes along to change that.

KingKiff5718d ago

OK I can accept that.

But I personally would prefer some side mission and some freedom in games.

I found the story of Alan Wake good. But the game-play extremely boring and repetitive and this is what the author is saying he wants to avoid in games.

Just my 2 cents.

coolbeans5718d ago (Edited 5718d ago )

Probably a notable criticism to the devs. Just because linearity drives a more fluid story, doesn't necessarily mean there can't be different ways of getting to certain objectives. The ability to expand Bright Falls is something I'd like to see the sequel (would like to hear some sequel news in the future as well).

rakunado5718d ago (Edited 5718d ago )

At least the author acknowledges that the game is just not for him or anyone who thinks like him. At least his opinion is listed with valid points that in many ways makes sense, unlike people who just hate on the game.

I on the other hand love Red Dead Redemption. However there is one game that made me think as much as the author did in terms of his points and that was Just Cause 2. Just Cause 2 is fun to muck around with but overall the game lacked depth to me. Compared to Just Cause 2, Red Dead Redemptions story is a godsend!

DarthMoose5718d ago (Edited 5718d ago )

Why bash a game when the game isn't even the type of game our into? Gtfo with your fail opinion.

Rockstar launches official marketplace for mods

Rockstar has launched an official marketplace for "every server and every player" to buy mods: Cfx Marketplace.

I wonder how much of this isn't just taken work of others who have modded for free.

Edit: Also, great way for R* to take popular ideas and build them into GTAVI based on demand.

fr0sty117d ago

What I see happening here is, R* is going to ban mods in GTA6 UNLESS you buy them from the marketplace and R* then gets a cut of that sale.

ActualWhiteMan117d ago

Ah, perfect timing with them taking down the Bully online fan mod. Greedy a$$ company.

Christopher117d ago

It's okay as long as they get a cut of the money.

fr0sty117d ago

Expect R* to force it on you.

Snookies12117d ago

Yep, right there with you. I'll happily donate to a mod creator if it looks really cool, or if I enjoy it. But expecting payment up front? Nope, not touching it.

IanTH117d ago (Edited 117d ago )

I'm not entirely sure how to read this, as it doesn't seem exactly like an exact parallel to Bethesda's paid mods shenanigans.

Rather than single player stuff, this appears to be aimed solely on Cfx Servers. From what I've gleaned, apparently Rockstar bought the Cfx mod team several years ago, coming a few years after weird contentions led them to ban a few of their members. Ultimately, the question is if they plan to keep this contained to only online/servers.

I have to guess to a degree yes. It'd be pretty hard to "force" paid mods for single player when modding files locally on your own machine, but much easier for servers they'll control. So perhaps this is their soft launch ahead of GTA6 online and they'll clamp down more tightly on non-official servers going forward? Ever since they've become a 1 or 2 property studio, I haven't really cared much for Rockstar stuff, so I'm not entirely up on everything surrounding this. Sounds like it has the potential to be problematic further down the line, but right now fairly easy to ignore...I think lol.

Red Dead Redemption Hits 3.3 Million Netflix Downloads on Mobile

Red Dead Redemption hits 3.3 million Netflix downloads on mobile, underscoring how subscription access drives reach over paid sales.

More like people don't play these type of games on their phone normally and don't try them out. Not like the places where people do play these games haven't crushed those numbers easily.

How many people actually played more than an hour of the game or came close to finishing it on mobile is the real question. If people aren't playing the games to a point that is purposeful, then why try when a subscription that is behind a streaming service isn't a sign of success but just curiosity.

What if Netflix becomes ‘the Netflix of gaming?!’

Alek83119d ago

I downloaded it because I already have a Netflix sub.
I am not going to buy it for $40 or whatever it costs on Google Play.

I tried it out and will be sticking to the PC version, but it's not bad.

Having said that, this is the issues I see vs the PC version:
1. Greatly reduced texture resolution.
2. Massive downgrade ALL lighting quality (this includes water, shadows, etc).
3. Stutter and heat. Prolonged play leads to both.
On the plus side, we have:
4. This thing is like 6GB vs the 12 on Steam.

Great way to try the game, but not the best way to play it.

darthv72121d ago

Perhaps Netflix will make a RDR series now that ST is done with.

Lionsguard120d ago

A Netflix version of RDR?... Oh boy... I can't wait... /s

TheColbertinator120d ago

They should build a production that includes members behind the True Grit remake and Hell on Wheels from AMC. Both were perfect for wild west vibes.

gold_drake119d ago

but i doubt people ACTUALLY played it on smartphone vs tried it out.

Another free update...good to know but I don't own a series X

Petebloodyonion153d ago

I’m not sure what the exact issue is. I had no trouble getting the free update—you basically get the new game for free if you have the 360 version in your digital library. Maybe the problem is related to owning or not owning the Undead DLC expansion.

Hypertension140153d ago (Edited 153d ago )

Yea I think thats what it is. I also own the game but not the expansion, and im unable to download the update.
