So what happens when someone buys the PS4, does this remain compatible. Or do we need to fork out more money for another adapter?

Sony really should give us BC on current PS3s for all previous hardware. Same should happen when the PS4 launches. Games cost alot of money and if we have to dish out more money just to be able to play them just doesnt sound right.

sam22365749d ago (Edited 5749d ago )

B-b-b-b-but people will buy the PS4 to play PS4 gaemz! N0 one wi1l care for teh PS3!! Just liek how people buy the PS3 to play PS3 games!! They don't care for PS2 games!!1!1!!!11!111

EDIT: If you couldn't tell, I was being sarcastic and I agree with you. Sony removing PS2 BC was one of the worst things they did this gen. The Sonyfriends, on the other hand, will gladly disagree.

Substance1015749d ago (Edited 5749d ago )

Well yes it sucks when someone has a collection of games from the PS2 era, and now cant play them.

You can say "go buy a PS2", however the problem with that is it takes space to place an old machine also its hard to find a PS2 in the market now and even if you do find one you dont know how old it really is, it could have been laying around at the shop for ages, older hardware may be prone to failure.

Hence getting a PS2 isnt really a good option, what will people be doing when the PS4 lauches? will they be buying older PS2's and PS3's to play their games?

IMO BC is a must. Games are simply too costly now. By the end of this generation some of us might have bought 3000-4000usd worth of games maybe even more. Then being told those wont work on the next system isnt a good solution.

Sonyfriends.

Reminds me of like that old Spiderman and the Superfriends show.

Picture some Sony fanboys coming out, all decked out in black with chrome trimmings, the PS3 logo on their chests.

"With the power of the Cell, we shall vanquish the evils of the Microsoft corporation and their team of defective super villains, the Xbox Circle. WE ONLY DO EVERYTHING... PLAY BEYOND!! *Wooosh*"

sam22365749d ago

@Substance: I'm one of those that still has PS2 games. I have over 40 and I can't play them because my PS2 broke. I can't get a PS2 where I live because the shops don't sell them anymore and I refuse to buy one on ebay due to past experiences with buying consoles from that shit site.

Also, not only will the fanboys tell you to buy a PS2 (Thus spending an extra €90/€100 on top of your €150/€200 PS3), they'll also tell you that you should've bought a 60GB PS3 "when you had the chance".

They think everyone's made of money.

@CimmerianDrake: LOL, bubble for you! That's hilarious!

coolfool5749d ago

when the PS4 comes out Sony will make a PS3 adaptor which will plug into the back of it. You will then be able to plug the PS2 adaptor into the back of the PS3 adaptor thus making each console backwards compatible with all previous generations.

rockleex5749d ago (Edited 5749d ago )

We were the ones who bought a PS3 when it still had BC because it was THAT important to us.

The others were just complainers always finding things to complain about. Saying things such as, "We don't need BC! Take it out so you can lower the price!"

Then Sony released a survey on features, prices, and BC, and the results showed the same answer. BC was the least important feature according to results.

Sony also knew BC costs the most, so they took out BC.

Now those complainers are complaining that they DON'T have BC.

I wish I could just go back to find all those debates on N4G about PS3 pricing and "useless features" that cost a lot, such as BC.

But I'm not going to do that because the complainers are always the ones with the shortest memory. They'll probably forget it the next day.

ico925749d ago (Edited 5749d ago )

the reality is only a small minority of ps3 owners demand BC,i know people with the 60 gb ps3's that haven't played a ps2 game since the ps3's launch, the reality is most ps3 owners couldn't care for it i rarely played ps1 games on my PS2, yes BC is a nice feature but i honestly i could do without it, the only reason why i wan't BC on the ps3 is so i can do this... (link below) other than that i have no real interest in it.

PS3 is physically incapable of playing PS2 games, the old 60gb's could because they had the PS2 hardware inside them, which was removed because people complained about price. This is a great way to solve it.

As for PS3 backwards compatibility on the PS4 - unless the PS4 is built on the same architecture it probably will be difficult. The PS3's architecture is pretty different from a standard computer, and if the PS4 doesn't use an updated Cell processor we probably wont see PS3 BC without any form of adapter down the line.

This adaper is proof that the PS3 is incapable of playing PS2 games, because if it could software emulate them, they would just release it as a program on PSN that you would have to pay for.

riksweeney5749d ago

I thought some models had the emulation running through software?

Cernunnos5749d ago

They still had an emulation chip, not the entire PS2 GPU and CPU. This was removed because it was expensive to manufacture and the media was nagging so much about the PS3 price.

rockleex5749d ago (Edited 5749d ago )

That way they only needed to emulate everything else but the super fast RAM.

I think its the PS2 video RAM, but it could be something else. Its been awhile since I read the technical aspects of why its impossible for PS3 to fully software emulate the PS2.

But basically the newer 80GBs and all PS3s after no longer have ANY PS2 hardware inside them, rendering them physically incapable of software emulating the PS2.

PS3's RAM are not fast enough to keep up with PS2 RAM.

Ocelot5255749d ago (Edited 5749d ago )

the first batch of NTSC launch PS3's had the PS2 CPU and GPU, while the PAL 60gig PS3's only had the PS2 GPU, the CPU was emulated, therefore the european 60gig PS3 has inferior PS2 playback, mostly resulting in low framerates in many games(lower than original on the PS2), for example mgs3 has a very bad framerate in many cutscenes on my PAL 60 GIG PS3

Rather than giving back BC without a PS2 chip (I have the slim model) they should just re-launch a new PS3 version with PS2 chip (and BC) for a higher price. Everyone should have the choice between a cheaper model and a higher priced model with more features.

I rather stick with my cheaper slim model and remade HD collections ^^

Cernunnos5749d ago

Well, that wont help the people who already have a PS3?

I think this is a smart solution, as long as the adapter isn't overpriced.

TimeSkipLuffy5749d ago

You can always sell your PS3 and buy a new one if BC is so important. Or if you live in the US you could have bought the one with BC to begin with :).

imvix5749d ago

@NightmareLuffy

Even if you had bought one with BC, it is likely to fail at somepoint. What happens when you want to buy a new system?

dredgewalker5749d ago

Or just buy a PS2 slim. Do the people who even complain about lack of BC even have a PS2 library? I would rather have a separate PS2 unit and lessen the use of the dvd/bluray drive, which is cheaper than replacing it. Didn't you people remember that you kept clamoring for a cheaper PS3 which lead Sony to remove the Emotion Engine to cut costs?

TimeSkipLuffy5744d ago

Then buy the new PS3 version with BC at a higher price like I suggested in my earlier comment?
I only say that if they had the chance to buy one why not buy one at the beginning. Because I live in Europe I had no choice than buy a PS3 without BC. Import would mean double the price of a hardware that was already high priced for me.

MagicAccent5748d ago

They should just start making PS3's with BC again. Many people would almost certanly boy a new more expensive PS3 with BC(and not that tiny 60gb version), rather than some accessory that will probably cost 'more' than a new PS2.

This.

kasasensei5749d ago

Oh great... Now sony's playing the same game as Microsoft... Tear features apart and make their customers pay more and more... Disgusting.
Make Software BC for every ps3 or do nothing!

CimmerianDrake5749d ago

Digital Foundry and anyone else who thinks this is a PS2 to PS3 adapter are forgetting something very important.

The patent never said it was a PS2 to PS3 adapter. It said was a current gen to next gen adapter. It could just as easily be for the PS4 to have the ability to play PS3 games, which makes A LOT more sense technologically and in a business sense considering the age of the PS2 and how late in the game adding BC would be for the PS3, especially when there are HD remixes coming out.

I really doubt this is a PS2 adapter.

swishersweets200315749d ago

if people really want ps2.. do what i did.. bought a slim bundle off ebay for 100 dollars, got 31 games with it. solves problem.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle44d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
