PS3: Backwards Compatibility or HD Collections

GOS Writes: "When the PS3 was first released Sony fans could enjoy PlayStation classics with a little feature called Backwards Compatibility. When the PS3 Slim found its way into our lives that feature was left behind. This decision didn’t make a lot of gamers happy because a good amount of them still play games from previous generations. However, Sony is in a very profitable position right now. Their HD collections of popular PS2 franchises have been going over pretty well with Sony fans.

Do you believe that Sony should still bring back Backwards Compatibility, or stay bundling popular franchises at an affordable price?"

though the ICO collection is awesome,
I would take BC any day.

NateNater5719d ago (Edited 5719d ago )

I already have BC. 60 gig PS3 and still got my old fat PS2 :P

So I'll take the HD collections :)

mikeslemonade5719d ago

How about neither? Focus all there assets on current generation games.

darthv725719d ago

sony was going to take the route of releasing the remastered ps2 games over psn instead of retail. That way you can buy the individual titles you prefer and they would include not only updated gfx but trophy support.

It really isnt that different than the approach sony is offering with the hd remakes on disc. Just a difference of delivery.

I can take either way. If it is more cost effective to make a physical compilation than a single title dlc release then so much the better.

Jak collection, sly cooper and rachet collections I am eagerly looking forward to. Maybe even konami can do a MGS collection the right way. 1 2 and 3 on a single bluray would be right nice next to number 4 in my collection.

cayal5719d ago

I'd much rather prefer to have the games on PSN and I could pick and choose what I want.

While I like the HD Remakes and I will get the Sly Collection, the ICO collection and I already have the GoW Collection, I don't know if I'd get many more (aside from Ratchet and Clank collection.)

BattleAxe5719d ago (Edited 5719d ago )

HD Collections all the way! I want better visuals, trophies and I want PS3 game cases as opposed to oldschool DVD cases.

Metal Gear Solid Collection and The Socom Collection would be my first choices.

Rainstorm815719d ago (Edited 5719d ago )

You are a complete fanb*y, posing as a gamer, with hopes of being a troll???

Pathetic.......

BC is nice but HD remasters are better IMHO... but then again if you really want both you can....

rockleex5719d ago (Edited 5719d ago )

Then they said "You are the controller", making you all excited.

Then you find out how limited Kinect is, yet you still defend it because "it will sell more".

I prefer HD remakes and I own the launch model.

RBdrift5719d ago

i would hope they remake socom 2 and add it to the ps store.

msbabie200345719d ago

i agree, best game they could remake, but they have no interest too :( socom was sony's baby in the shooter dept, too bad they treat it like a red hairedstep child now :( and want to put so much into killzbore.

socom 4 will be do or die for many ps3 fans/gamers trust me, especially after that beer coaster of a game they released called socom confrontation, oops i mean constipation :)

PSFan1005719d ago

I think both should be done. I think BC is needed, mainly because I can't see them re-master every single PS2 game there is. I also think re-mastered versions of ICO, GOW, etc is good for people who never picked them up in the past and want to see the story. (might as well play them in HD/60fps/trophies)But I really don't think gamers should have to rebuy games, they already own, for minor updates to the game.

kneon5719d ago

I have BC on one of my PS3's but I would prefer HD collections. But then I only own one PS2 game and I only bought it about a month ago.

chase1675719d ago

Ps2 games look like shit now

mrcash5719d ago

yeah so would i, but I would rather have 60fps on new ps3 games.

Orange5719d ago

well, I can only guess at the budget for these "collections", but I'm sure it's a small fraction of the budget for big titles, so I'm sure it's not taking away too much resources away from new titles.

ThanatosDMC5719d ago

I got a stack of PS2 games in the closet. So i'll take BC again. Fatty died on me.

meluvulongtime5719d ago

I have BC and I still like the HD collections. I like the trophy support and the upgrade in graphics. I can't wait to see ICO collection in HD

dantesparda5719d ago

How bout both, BC & HD Collections that way everybody wins and we all have a choice. More choices is better

Brklynty15719d ago

nothin better than HD and trophy/move support

Sarcasm5719d ago

Think about how amazing Shadow of the Colossus was, but it still had an "ok" frame rate. Now play that same game 60fps 720p 4xAA. It's going to be a much more amazing game.

TheLastGuardian5720d ago

Why can't we just have both. If all PS3's were backwards compatible I would still buy the collections so I could play them in HD and with trophies.

Homicide5720d ago

As someone who has 60+ PS2 games, BC.

TheGameFoxJTV5719d ago

My Ps2 is dead, and I have so many Ps2 games I haven't finished and want to play again that have no chance in hell of being remade. And why buy something again I already own just because they sprinkled a little pixie dust on it?

NateNater5719d ago

Well if you really want to play your old PS2 games again you can always go out and buy a new PS2. They're pretty cheap these days.

msbabie200345719d ago

Well if you really want to play your old PS2 games again you can always go out and buy a new PS2. They're pretty cheap these days. <--exactly why sony should have kept BC in the ps3, it couldn't have been that damn expensive.

also i wonder why they aren't doing emulation????? money perhaps??? naw they can't be it, sony doesn't want our money they just love us too much to want that right??

Trroy5719d ago (Edited 5719d ago )

I have nearly 100 PS2 games, and I prefer the HD remasters, as well as own a launch model 60GB.

I got a PS2. I never needed the BC, although the upscaling is kinda nice.

Gue15719d ago

Is not like we have a choice anyway...

msbabie200345719d ago

sony made that choice for us, because they love us :) still don't get one thing though-

they can keep the BC i guess but what i don't get is why cut the ps3 down to 2 usb ports? now u got ya controllers, ps move coming out and all wth sony??

biggest MISTAKE with the ps3 "redesign" in my opinion. the damn ps2 had 2 usb ports lol

LordMarius5720d ago (Edited 5720d ago )

As someone who has a 80GB BC PS3, HD Collections.

Hellsvacancy5719d ago

HD Collections 4-me aswell, theres only a handful of PS2 games id wanna play again, FFX and Hitman Blood Money 2 name a couple

Sigh5719d ago

agreed. Have BC also but I loved the God of War remastered games. Want to see some more ps2 games remastered.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle14d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Relientk7714d ago

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Five Games I'd Love To See On the Neo Geo AES+

Blues Journey is the game I'd like to see.

Popsicle17d ago

Pre-ordered mine a few days ago. Love this concept and hope there are more games announced. I can’t justify paying the prices for games that collectors are asking for. It’s the primary reason I own almost every console except the Neo Geo.

Agent7516d ago

I've pre ordered one here in the UK, no games though, as I'll move it on for a higher price. The white model looks awesome, but as expected, the price is too high. We'll probably see more of those all in one cartridges from China containing every AES game. In the UK, AES+ game at £70 ($95) is better than eye watering prices for the originals, but these games are so old and I can honestly say SNK didn't release many classics. The Metal Slug series is the only series I rate, there were just too many Street Fighter clones and not enough scrolling fighting games. Overall, the Neo Geo was poor for all genres apart from one on one fighters. Videos on YouTube asking for games from that console generation to be ported to the AES+, but who'd want to pay £70 for Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2? There's a lot of SNK collections out there, the best being Metal Slug Anthology on the PlayStation 2. The Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on the Switch contains 12 games for around £30, instead of £840 if released on the AES+. For collectors, the AES+ is the best news since sliced bread. Are there enough SNK fans out there? Nowhere near. Those £70 cartridges will soon start creeping up in price and it'll be a re-run of the original console.

I always wanted one in the 90's but couldn't afford it. Now i can but i think if i get one it will be collecting dust fast. It's a nostalgia thing i guess.
